We have nothing but great things to say about Joel and the results of him working with our 6month old German shepherd puppy , Remi. He is reliable and trustworthy. Joel is very knowledgeable about k9 behavior, specifically with this breed. His calm and gentle demeanor is non threatening and Remi connected with him right away. Joel gave us updates and reinforcement advice after each session. Remi learned so much after his 6 sessions. We look forward to working with Joel further for training with our next German shepherd puppy and some advanced training with Remi in the near future.

Finding Tina has been a real blessing. She loves dogs AND felines slept in the bed with her. They usually are very shy. I take that as a sure sign she got their vote. I just took a new job and wasn't sure about my travel schedule. Tina is very patient and flexible. She stayed for three nights and I came home to happy pets. I have a 2 year old German Shepherd and 5 year old Mini Schnauzer too. The GS is high energy and Tina has a gift with working with large dogs....not everyone is fond of the Pitt Bulls or German Shepherd can rest assured she will know what to do and walked both the GS and mini together.....said "No problem". I'm a bit obsessive "helicopter pet parent" and Tina sent photos and I felt good knowing everybody was happy.

My dogs love Lena! She and her dogs have been helpful in training my hard headed 4 year old German Shorthair pointer! Lena has been very accomodating and creative in finding ways to engage him. Our 11 year old rescue enjoys using his natural talents in the nosework class. Furthermore it keeps his aging mind stimulated. I highly recommend understanding our dogs for your training needs!!

The Leashlife team made a world of difference for my pups. We have four dogs including from German Shepherd to Yorkie and they could handle everything. They were extremely reaponsive, professional, and great to work with. I'm a very private person and I don't let just anyone into my house, so I'm extremely happy that I found a team that I can trust with that kind of responsibility!

We rescued our german shepherd Ritter when he was about 1 year old. He had come from an abusive past and was a bit of a mess. We engaged John shortly after we got Ritter and John helped us turn Ritter into the confident and well trained dog he is today. John is great reading dogs and knowing what it takes to reach their potential and knows what is too much. He trains interactively and it helped us so much but more importantly, it helped Ritter immensely. I cannot say enough good things about John. Many people compliment us on how well trained Ritter is and we always highly recommend John.

Amanda is a very calming person. She knows how to calm my dog down and get her attention all the while both having fun. I have a German Sheppard puppy who needed to work on her social skills. Amanda went above and beyond what I expected. Not only did she work with my dog and me, but my husband, 2 of my children and one of my grandchildren who was very afraid of the dog. I think they have a new respect for each other. Thank you, Amanda. You have a very special gift teaching and sharing your skills with others.

When I called Alpha-Moves I was extremely impressed that the President of the company, Nick, was the one to answer. Nick was very professional and was able to work around my schedule to set up a consultation. After he met Sam (my German Shepherd) he was able to customize a plan for me specifically. Sam can now work on and off the leash and is now much more controllable! Not only did he train Sam but he worked with me on how to properly use the training he instilled in her. Overal I would recommend Alpha-moves over anywhere else!

We have 2 Australian shepherds. One is highly energetic and the other is very protective. Theresa not only trained our dogs and corrected their behaviors but also trained us as owners on how to handle our dogs when guest come over. As soon as she walked in she showed complete assertiveness and leadership and the dogs quickly became aware who was the new alpha. She taught us how to become more assertive and the alpha in our home. Theresa always followed up throughout the week to ensure training was useful and on track. She is extremely knowledgable about dog behaviors and how to correct the behaviors we didn't want. Thanks to Theresa we now have to tools and knowledge and our dogs show promise to allow guest into our home.

Ted @ QCK9 has been absolutely Awesome! He was able to straighten out my older Malinois-Mix and correct some behavioral problems. We've also recently started training with our Dutch Shepherd. The sessions have been fun and educational. I think that I've learned just as much as the dogs have.

Robin is a highly intuitive and skilled dog trainer. She loves dogs and dogs love her. She is gentle in her approach, and it is highly successful. Robin is not only wonderful with her dog clients, she is equally loved by the dog parents. She has a great sense of humor and patiently teaches mom and dad how to treat their four-legged kids.

We have a male German Shepherd that had some dominance issues before training. Now he is a much better dog. He doesn’t pull me when we walk on his leash. He responds to his commands when before he would ignore us. We had some fence issues and he got out and he came right to us without running or giving us a hard time. I highly recommend Highland Canine of South Carolina!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
