John was professional, responsive and reliable. I had him do demo to a pergola and also asked him to remove a small tree. Job well done, pleasant experience from start to finish.

Hired them for recurring Lawn services. Kelvin is professional and polite. They now on schedule and over additional services upon request. Had one week I asked for trimmed hedges and they left a weed/tree between the hedges. When I texted Kelvin, he had it cut down. They charge a card I provided before each now and notify me.

They even cleared my large deck of all the fallen seeds and pollen from my trees. This is a great company and the owner made sure everything was perfect before he left. tHis is a top notch ten star organization

Steve was extremely fair as I originally asked.to have 3 trees removed and after he assessed the trees determined that only one tree had to be removed. He did an excellent.job in taking the tree down and trimmed several large branches that were hanging over the roof of the house. Cleaned up all areas and hauled Everything away. Looks much better now and no more worry about clogged up gutters. Thank you Steven!

Brayan and the crew arrived and had my lawn trimmed/mowed and cleaned of tree debris in 15 mins. On top of that they charge half of what everyone else does. Him and his crew were nice too. I will definitely recommend and rehire. Good job.

Charlotte Pavers and Stone replaced a slab in our driveway in less than a day. We were impressed with the their ability to remove large oak tree roots which was the cause of the driveway failing. The company was on time and we consider the outcome of their work to be very good. The only disappointment was the lack of timely communication between us and CP&S.

Kevin McKoy is OUTSTANDING. He is fair and honest. His forte is lawn care, however, he has a wide resource of networks to extend his services for his customers. I initially contacted McKoy's Lawn Care & Maintenance to give a quote on a fence/gate project. The fence/gate projected expanded to front lawn repair, french drain and flower bed installation. Then he did a full back yard makeover: rock path, lawn, tree & plant installation, flower bed preparation, connecting gutter pipes to drain properly, and large flower/garden beds. In addition, when there was a slight tweak (correction), he was accommodating and ensured that the fix was completed satisfactorily. I would recommend Kevin McKoy.

I was very pleased with the tree service from Presto Landscape & Tree. Jose and his brother trimmed the overgrown tree in my front yard and ALL the bushes/trees in my backyard (about 20 in total). He was very personable, worked very hard in the 90 degree heat, and gave me a fair price for the job. I would use him again for my tree trimming needs and would recommended him.

He really did a great job and was able to do the work soon after quoting. Rob was friendly, knowledgeable, and communicated very well. The only reason I gave a 4/5 is the price. First let me say that my backyard was a mess. I have poison ivy, vines, overgrown trees and much more. However, it’s only a small portion of my back yard and I was quoted $775. That’s about $90/hour for the amount of time he was there. I’m by no means trying to discourage anyone from using Rob, he did a great job, but $90/hour may be quite steep for lawn work....that’s almost 3 times what I make with an engineering degree. In the end he knocked off $200 because I said I would do bagging up of the sticks and leaves. It only took me 1.5 hours to do...It doesn’t make sense to pay someone $100/hr to gather up sticks and put them on the curb.

We were absolutely thrilled with Paul and his team. A tree fell on our garage and completely destroyed the roof, so I wrote to several contractors on ThumbTack to find a contractor to do the repairs. Paul responded very quickly, set up a time to survey the damage right away, and had an estimate of repair costs to me by that same evening. He corresponded with our insurance representatives to work out any discrepancies between their estimate and his, and as a result they agreed to pay for the full cost of the repairs with no issue. Paul and his guys worked extremely quickly to get the repairs done; I was honestly blown away by how much progress they made once they started working! Additionally, my neighbor, who is a sweet old guy that's restored many, many homes on his own, made a point of telling me that he'd kept a close eye on the repairs as they were being done and was happy to report that Paul's Contracting had done a very good job, in his opinion. Additionally, Paul is just a real nice guy and was extremely professional and courteous throughout. I highly, highly recommend hiring this company.

TreeTech removed a large, secondary trunk on a mature London Plane tree for us. The tree was struck by lightning last summer and that trunk died as a result. They gave us an excellent quote, which we accepted immediately. Since the removal wasn't an emergency, and because it was a comparatively small job (large trunk, but just the one tree to service) we were able to time the service to fit within their work schedule in our area. Every contact with TreeTech was courteous and professional, from the owner, who did the estimate, his wife Robin who handled the scheduling and follow up, and the crew of three who did the on-site work. The actual removal was careful, thorough, and efficient. The tree is close to the house, in a heavily landscaped area, with other large trees close by. The neighbor's garage and/or our carport would have sustained damage had the tree fallen in a storm, or if taken down by a less highly skilled crew. We are very well pleased with the work that TreeTech did for us. We highly recommend them to others in the area for tree service needs. We will definitely contact them again for any future tree maintenance or removal at our home.

We found Steve online and is the 1st time I called someone other than a Personnal referral. He showed up 15 min early and walked my property and listened to what I was looking for. I’ve only purchased landscape lighting from Lowe’s and spent around 1,000 and the lights always broke and never worked great after the day of install however the lights were only 10% of the power I wanted. So..... Steve made several suggestions and I kept telling him more....more...more lights...so he gave us 3 proposals... 1- great lighting, 2- my wife’s lighting and last was “ THE FULL AL”.. obviously my name is Al. There was only 15 lights difference between the 1st and 3rd Estimate but we were using almost 60 lights.... so we approved the FULL AL and the estimate came in at 1/2 what we budgeted so we were excited. Each light is copper and weighs like 6 lbs. The light fixture quality he uses is second to no one. The install took a week and WOW... The way he placed the spotlights to capture the tree canopies and the way he uses shadow effect is spectacular. We could not be happier with our lifetime warranty lights and our front, back, pathways, pool etc... look remarkable. We both actually look forward to dusk and night because our house is soooooo pretty at night. Steve is such a nice guy and generally cares only about making us happy that we actually found a new friend and I know as a fact we will get together with him on a Personnal basis. This is the only review of a contractor I have ever done online and that should tell anyone who reads this something. Al & Lisa

Dennis has a very professional group of guys working with him. Personally, Dennis is very friendly and easy to talk to. Sheila, who does the estimating, is also very personalable. All his workers have great manners and spoke to me in a professional manner. I had seven trees taken down (five sweet gum and two pines - one of the pine trees was very big and tall). They took down a 90 year old 100 ft. pine tree with no problem. His team is very skilled in what they do. And Dennis is a man of his word. He did what he said he would do and then did a little extra (cut down two more small trees and chipped them up). His price is very reasonable compared to the other estimated I received. I would use him again if I needed more trees cut down.

We hired them to cut down 5 trees on our property and we wanted to keep the wood. They were very precise on where they wanted them to land and they did a awesome job, trees fell exactly where they planned. They cut the trees into logs once the trees were on the ground. Great price and wonderful people to deal with.

I am puzzled by some of the reviews I am seeing for Travis and Crossroads Turf Services. My experience was nothing short of superb! Having just completed three home projects, and going through 3 sets of estimates, contracts, and work completion there is no contest at all. I received the most outstanding and professional service from Crossroads. Travis arranged to come see my project within a day of my request, and had an written estimate in my inbox within 48 hours. He took time with the walk through and asked questions to be sure we were on the same page. Once I accepted the bid, we kept in touch as I waited for completion of my deck demolition and construction. When that project was going badly and taking 3 times as long as expected, he graciously pushed back my scheduled date by a week. Communication was easy and prompt. My project was, in the scope of things, on the smaller side. I asked him to pull up all rotting landscape ties from the beds outside my home-about a dozen of them. I wanted the beds mulched. In my courtyard, I had dirt in areas where a larger deck had been, and a mess of weeds everywhere else. I wanted about 300 sq feet of sod, all beds edged and mulched, and a hydrangea and rose bush moved. After discussing how to protect my drainage system and the new deck, he suggested repurposing unused paver bricks to protect the drain area, and rocks surrounding the base of the deck. All work was completed in a day, and I could not be more pleased. I did not like my yard the morning her arrived, and that evening it was the best part of my home. I love the transformation, and would recommend Crossroads without hesitation. I already have!

Clay and two guys took out trees, tilled in topsoil, sod my front yard and seeded my large back yard. Clay is extremely friendly and professional. He has the necessary heavy equipment to make quick work of a large project. Afterwards, they cleaned up my driveway and street, using a power washer. I would definite use Green Tek Landscapes again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
