Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Very "down to earth" dog trainers. They use appropriate correction and positive reinforcement. Best of all, we could tell they really enjoyed our dogs

Packman dog walking assisted me and my fiancé on leash training. We have a very energized 5 month old puppy pit bull. It was a great experience and really learned some important facts when it comes to puppy training.

Shana and Will have helped me gain confidence in training my problem dog. This isn't our first time using a trainer, but with Grateful Dawg, we are actually facing my dog's fears and learning how to control his behavior when he is in an uncomfortable situation rather than totally avoiding his triggers. We have been so impressed with our results, and we are only on our third session!

Mike was a great help. We rescued a dog and needed a one-time refresher course on dog training. Mike showed us a few techniques that worked right away and gave us things to work on. We will definitely call him back if we need future help.

Frank has been a lifesaver for my dog. After relocating to Raleigh from Dallas, my dog’s behavioral issues had gotten worse and more severe. He is(was) a food guarder, he couldn’t be around other dogs as he would try to go after them and then bite me. Back in Dallas he was in a full time training/daycare program and had shown some improvement to where it was tolerable. I had contacted several other trainers, but some refused to work with my dog due to the bite history, guarding and others only offered management, not actually addressing the behavior. I was concerned as we are planning on starting a family soon. Frank is extremely passionate about dogs’ mental well-being and is compassionate when working with ME. I am proud to say I am no longer afraid of my dog. With Frank’s program, my dog’s serious behavior issues is improving rapidly, I feel much more confident and in control. It will be a road to recovery, but I know it will be worth it with Frank in my corner as my coach.

After having a nearly hour and a half conversation with Kieli I felt compelled to write this review. This review is about Kieli herself, and not the actual dog training. We have not had an actual training session yet, but she is definitely hired based on our initial conversation. Kieli was very quick & responsive to my messages, and even tried to contact me several times based on my availability. It took several tries (not to her fault) before we actually spoke. She was extremely polite, professional, easy to talk to, and very informative. She also wasn’t judgmental, or a know it all. Which is really a turn off for me. I don’t know the length of a typical phone call/evaluation, but mine went on for nearly an hour and a half. I didn’t feel rushed at all. She let me ask as many questions as I wanted, and I had a lot of questions! She also asked me a lot of questions. Specific questions about my dog, and our needs. Which tells me that she genuinely cares, and that she was listening to me. I left the conversation feeling better educated, relieved, excited, and most of all hopeful. I have worked with a trainer before, and although they did a good job it was more of a generalized training. At this point I’m looking for more specific training, and I want my time and money to be spent on my dogs specific needs. Even if you’re just considering hiring a dog trainer you should contact her! I’m so glad I did! I can’t wait to work with her!

Mike came for a consultation regarding our german shepards increased agressive behavior. He took time to understand the background including previous training. Mike came up with a solid plan for us to build on the existing training and develop some positive behaviors while also adressing the behaviors we do not want to see continued. Mike was extremely knowledgeable and it is clear he has alot of experience with dog behavioral issues. We would highly recommend him if you are trying to address bad behaviors or obedience training.

I have had THE BEST experience and results working with Shana and Will. They are quick to respond, very flexible and easy to work with. I chose to work with the Grateful Dog after speaking with other trainers because Shana is so confident and knowledgeable she immediately put me at ease in our phone conversations. I appreciate that she took the time to not only explain her plan with my dog but also what she expects from me. After our first session I felt more confident in handling my anxious dog in various settings- each session has been extremely beneficial for myself and my dog. We are noticing tremendous changes in behavior. Many thanks to Will and Shana!!

Ben did an amazing job with Bob! I definitely see the difference in him in just the 5 days he spent with him. It was hard being away from him, but Ben gave me daily updates and pictures of Bob every day without fail! I HIGHLY recommend him! I now feel comfortable taking Bob out to be a dog safely. Ben will be the trainer I look to advice for all my dogs from now on.

Shana and Will were great! They worked with my Standard Poodle(stubborn) and me(anxious) to help us both be successful as a pair. They were fun, patient, and persistent in helping us learn to have Henry(stubborn Poodle) walk with me without pulling on the leash, interact appropriately with other dogs, sit, down, watch and stay. We worked through 2 series of training to get this far. Many people who live near me have commented on what a nice and well-mannered dog he has become. I always say that we had great Grateful Dawg trainers. I believe that Henry has the qualities to be a successful Therapy dog. I am looking forward to their next group session when they will work with us to get Henry ready for the certification as a good citizen. That is a special assurance that Henry CONSISTENTLY does the required behaviors. Having a dog that people seek out and want to be with because of their charm is a process. I am confident that Shana and Will will get us there. Susan Lewellen

We hired Imagine Dog Training to help us with the basics with our 7 mo old Yorkie. Paula came out and spent over 2 hours with us and made sure we understood all steps before she left. She followed up with a full personalized manual by email that we can reference at any time. Finley has already caught on to the training, and we feel so much more confident with him. I highly recommend Paula's services and would have her back at any time for additional work.

She showed up early and helped me so much with my dogs! She helped me to understand why they act the way they do and be able to correct it myself. She was right, it took a few weeks of corrective training but they picked up and are much better. She even gave me extra helpful hints for chewing and destructive behavior! Would recommend her to anyone!

Our 3 year old shepherd mix, Huck, is a wild man. His leash manners were nonexistent and he was very reactive toward other dogs. He jumped up on everyone he saw. He barked and lunged at every dog he saw on a walk, pulling on the leash the entire time. We did a board and train package with Kieli that included e-collar training for Huck, which we had never tried before. The results were amazing! Huck is a handful and I’m sure he was incredibly difficult to work with but Kieli was up to the task! She kept us updated throughout the stay with emails and pictures, and when he came home it was incredible how much Huck had learned. We can take him with us to social events now, and stop and chat with a friend during a walk while Huck remains patiently in a sit. He responds better to commands, he is much easier to walk, and we don’t have the constant stress of worrying that he’s going to act up! We would highly recommend Kieli to anyone. She is professional and skilled and Huck loved her so much he cried when she left after lessons!
