I hired Chris to come fix a project started by another carpenter that wasn’t coming out the way I had hoped. Chris and his crew worked long and hard to redeem my project as much as possible. I appreciated Chris’s thoughtfulness in figuring out the best way to save as much of my original investment as possible. Will definitely hire Chris again

Jeff did a wainscoting installation for me. My communication with J&J Woodworking LLC for weeks prior to my appointment was great. Communication is a BIG deal for me; lack of or if it's clearly expressed, will discourage me from hiring a possibly good repair/carpenter/maintenance person. I only sent a few photos of what I had in mind and Jeff delivered it! Jeff arrived promptly, actually 30+ minutes ahead of schedule and jumped right into his work. He talked me through and showed me the entire process along the way. To my surprise, he completed the job well before I even expected him to be done and he cleaned everything up and wiped down stray marks from my wall. The end result is very nice, elegant and rather classy, I must admit. Can't wait to show it off to my family and friends. I also discussed with him a future crown moulding job that I'm interested in. Additionally, I would recommend Jeff to family, friends and co-workers.

Bruce is a great professional to work with. Extremely punctual, and very reliable. Bruce completed trim work for a 1,200 sq. ft. great room with cathedral ceilings. Not many carpenters can do the type of intricate detail work Bruce can. Bruce also prepped (conditioned, stained, and polyurethane coat) over two hundred 16 foot long pine tongue and groove boards (for the great room ceiling installation). Would definitely recommend, and in fact, we're using Bruce for many more remodeling projects at our home.

I had the opportunity to meet Justin through Thumbtack. He worked on my porch railings after winning the bid for the job. He was fair and reasonable in his pricing. As far as the work done, it appeared to be excellent craftsmanship. Justin is very professional and a skilled carpenter. I would definitely give him an opportunity to bid on another job first and pray to God its workable so he can work his magic once again! As the weather improves over the next few weeks, he will return to put the final touches on some quality work. Thank you Justin! First class job!!!!!

The Mr Fix It team did a great job on repairing our roof & damaged soffit. Chris explained what they would do when he came out for the estimate and when they returned to work ... that's exactly what they did. They were punctual, diligent, and courteous. When they found issues - they showed them to us; using technology to video the activity (as was the case with our carpenter ants). When they left, there was no sign that work had been done here - everything was clean as a whistle. I highly recommend he and his team to assist anyone and I plan on using them again.

HI! I am writing in support of Ground Up Construction. About 8 months ago my father, who is 94, and a retired carpenter, had an incident with a raccoon. The raccoon ate through the floor of his laundry room looking for a place to stay for the winter. This did an incredible amount of damage. I placed a call for bid on Thumbtack and got an immediate response from Ryan Todd at Ground Up Construction. They came up and took a look at the damage and gave a detailed bid. They were by far the most professional of the company's that spoke to us about the job and gave the most complete materials list and labor expenses. They spoke to my father about what they thought would need to be done and discussed with him what problems they might encounter. As my father put it, "they are going to do what I would do, if I could have done the work." Two weeks later they were on the job. The job was done quickly and finished on budget. These men are all thoroughly competent professionals with plenty of experience. I highly recommend them for any carpentry that you might need. Mike Lopp 336-784-8760

I hired Shane to pressure wash my house, porch and the fences around my property after a friend of mine recommended him. I appreciated that he was not in a hurry and spent time on detail. The pressure washing revealed some wood rot on my trim. I was surprised and grateful that Shane turned out to be a talented Carpenter as well as a skilled Pressure Washer. After a quick trip to Lowes for some trim pieces and a little bit of paint, my home looks very much like it did the year we moved in. I recommend Shane to my neighbors and friends without reservation and I have taken the time to write this to recommend him to you. David

We first met JC and Robinson Construction when they performed major repairs after a tree limb crashed through our roof. They did an excellent job with the roof repair including replacing 8 sheets of plywood, interior drywall ceiling and wall replacement, and additional repairs to a rotted sun room roof and exterior over sized sun room window and supporting structure. Robinson Construction also replaced two sun room sunlights. All work was top notch and completed on time. JC's star performer is his lead carpenter Freddie who is clearly an outstanding craftsman and the key to JC and Robinson's success. We were so impressed with this experience that we then paid a reasonable premium to have JC and crew repaint the home and effect other needed repairs, and install two new doors. The end product was equally impressive but the work dragged on for well over a month, partly due to weather but also due to other job conflicts. The length of time it took became aggravating and detracted from an otherwise positive outcome. Still I would highly recommend JC and Robinson Construction, just make sure you have a strong understanding regarding the timeline for completion.

Yerif did an excellent good job installing my crown molding and wainscoting. It only took him three days to complete the entire project including tearing down sheetrock and adding railings. I am very glad that I hired him to do the work and I would definitely hire him again for any other projects I may have.

Russ called within 15 minutes of my post. I had waited the previous day for a contractor that did not show much less call. Russ' s carpenter came the next day on a Sunday morning and completed the job in a professional, timely manner.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
