Amanda Medlin did such an amazing job with my resume. Once I graduated college I had created a resume myself. I began applying for jobs, when I noticed that people were not calling me back. I found Amanda Medlin and she completely changed around my resume making it very professional. Well after it was completed I began applying for more jobs. Well guess what? I got a ton of call backs! She truly has a gift and is a very talented resume writer.

Mary was a freelance writer for Creative Loafing, an alternative weekly in Charlotte, while I was editor. She was a delight to work with: smart, funny, could write nearly any kind of story and was honestly one of the only writers we had that never missed a deadline. A total pro.

A great writer that I had the opportunity to hire. He does extensive research of any topic that you need a write up about so even if its something he isn't familiar with, the end product appears to be written by an expert with 30 years experience. Grammar and spelling have always been perfect. I will definitely use this writer again when I have more work for him.

Voice over talent for 25 years, have done many local and national spots. I'm a radio imager as well, (the voice inbetween the jocks) across the country for multiple formats. Above all else, I'm a writer. Blogs, spots, imaging, shows, books. I have a best selling book called, "Is This Thing ON?" Also on the air for 25 years in NYC as a jock, now on the air at K104.7. I've been doing morning drive for the past 4 months, as they regroup, and will begin middays April 4th! I believe in building relationships with clients, where the big bucks are always nice, but they can be made over a long period of time because of continuous work built on trust and quality. Point being, just because I'm a NYC voice talent, doesn't mean I won't work within your budget.

        About

I have an undergraduate degree in industrial and systems engineering, and a Juris Doctor from a prominent law school. I practiced law for almost 30 years, during which time, it was necessary for me to generate many written documents both for the court and in the form of reports to my corporate clients. I was on the editorial board of a prominent legal publication, and published a section of a guide used by attorneys for continuing education purposes. Additionally, in my capacity as a partner in various large law firms, it was necessary for me to edit and critique the writing of numerous young attorneys over the years. In recent years, I served as an English and writing instructor at the community college level. For over five years, I have maintained a Google Blogspot blog, The View from Outside My Tiny Window. Additionally, I recently published an e-book, Starting Your Business – The Fundamentals: A Comprehensive, Thinking Business Owner’s Guide, which can be found on Amazon.com. As a result of my experience, I have extensive writing skills. I can generate all sorts of legal documents, both litigation and transactional in nature, and I can perform numerous paralegal functions. Outside of the legal domain, I can perform a number of different tasks, including, but not limited to, the following: (a) generate blog or other web site content; (b) generate timelines after the review of documents; (c) generate difficult and complex letters; (d) organize and summarize voluminous documents; (e) edit scholastic papers; (f) write speeches; (g) simplify complex documents; (h) write articles for various publications and newsletters; and (i) generate business policy and manuals. As you can see, I have a wide range of experience in many different fields.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

        • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
        • Strong writing skills.
        • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
        • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
        • Expertise in your target area.
        • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

        • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
        • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
        • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
        • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
