James and his team did an excellent job! They mulched a natural area as well as the bed around the house. They removed two unwanted bushes, trimmed all the remaining bushes and worked on straightening a small tree. They then mowed and edged the whole yard. We will be having them mow every two weeks!

I actually sent out a Thumbtack request on Sunday afternoon and D&S responded immediately. They had availability the very next day. I'm getting ready to sell my house, so the quick turn around was fantastic and reasonable price. The tree looks great and I would highly recommend D&S and will reach out to them again for my future tree needs.

I went to Home Advisor and AJ’s Tree Service was the first to respond. They were able to come out and give me a quote almost immediately. This was Thursday and they came out Monday. He even said they could do it that day. The pricing was competitive and they got it done before I got home from work. I highly recommend this company. I will certainly call them when my needs call for it!

David installed an owl box 15' in a tree after preparing the box with aluminum flashing to keep squirrels out, and replaced screen in the porch screen door. Service was prompt, courteous, efficient, and very thorough. These two jobs took two hours. I am preparing a list of jobs for him to return and complete. I was very pleased.

Jeremy did a wonderful job landscaping the front of our home. He removed shrubs and bushes, taking care not to damage remaining plants. Jeremy also added lighting to the front of our house and under a few trees. It really adds to the character of our home. Jeremy is knowledgeable and very easy to work with.

I hired Zac to cut and trim my lawn. Zac is always professional and thorough. He takes the time other companies don't take to make sure the yard is perfect, and he always takes time to clean up. In addition to the cuts and trims, Zac has helped us grow grass in spots that seemed helpless. He aerated, put down top soil and lime, and seeded for me in several problem areas. Within a couple of weeks those spots were perfect. Zac also planted 10 trees for me and has agreed to help me with a landscape overhaul this spring. I would strongly recommend Zac for any lawn care needs.

We hired them to cut down 5 trees on our property and we wanted to keep the wood. They were very precise on where they wanted them to land and they did a awesome job, trees fell exactly where they planned. They cut the trees into logs once the trees were on the ground. Great price and wonderful people to deal with.

Triad Tree Trimmers promptly came out and gave us a great quote and got to work the same day. They were able to efficiently cut down about an 80 foot, dead tree that had power lines on one side and the house on the other. Unlike other tree companies, that tried to take advantage b/c of the condition/safety hazard the tree imposed, Triad Tree was fair and honest, and safely took down our tree w/ out all of the bulky equipment that was "required" by other companies. We will definitely use them for future tree work. Thank you Triad Tree!

Grove Park Tree Care responded to my request for an estimate to have several large trees trimmed around my house. Josh came out to my house same day to give me a quote. All branches, limbs, and leaves were cleaned up and hauled away. I couldn’t be happier.

Daniel and his team were great! High quality work and great value and price. Daniel cut down 4 large trees for me where a building was between and handled the difficulty great. Not only did he cut them down, but also grinded the stumps for me. To top it off I needed some dirt removal done, and he had additional equipment to pick it up and haul it away. I would use and refer Flores Tree Service to anyone in the future.

When I called Carolina Arboriculture they came out immediately to give me a quote on trees that were down on my property from storm damage. The quote was very reasonable and affordable. They called me before they came out and let me know the names of the persons who would be performing the work. When they arrived they performed the work in a timely manner and cleaned up after. I will definitely call them in the future for my landscaping needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
