Weather gave us a little problem but Steve kept me updated and came on Sunday to get it in. He was professional and most of all he treated my home like I would. Not just doing exactly what was called for but cleaned up our out buildings, stone wall, and walkway. I think it is hard to find contractors that go that extra mile. I would recommend him to anyone.

I'm very impressed with Stephen's quality of work. He replaced my field stone concrete steps with big slabs of granite and also tore up my walk way to install some new beautiful cambridge pavers. It didn't end there, he also ran sleeves for my outdoor powerline and irrigation system since those lines ran under my previous walkway. His pricing was very good and I plan to hire him again for future projects. I also get compliments all the time now from my neighbors when they pass by my brand new walkway :).

Working with Jakob is great. He's very professional while also being heartfelt and friendly. Jakob's knowledge, enthusiasm, and commitment are top-notch. We're delighted with our two-level retaining wall and have great expectations for the "grass driveway" he is currently installing. We'll be returning to Deep Green and Jakob for our future landscaping needs--with pleasure.

Bill and his team did a wonderful job on our retaining wall!. We had originally bought the house knowing the wall would need to be replaced due to an improper install and no drainage. We had Gleason Landscaping come in and do an awesome stone wall with proper drainage. Will definitely hire them again..

This was a fairly large project. Mike and his team were there from the beginning ~ planning stage to the end. Mike's experience was helpful when it came to the types of flowers and shrubs needed for our yard. He helped us pick out walking stones for our front pathway, pebbles for around the pool, privacy bushes, flowers for the rock garden, etc, etc. We really can't say enough about how caring he was with trying to keep our vision. His quote was very reasonable and he let us know what was going on from day to day. We would highly recommend MSB Property. Would not hesitate to call Mike back for future projects.

I hired Randy to create some curb appeal to the front of my home. I had an idea of what I wanted and I had 3 quotes for the same job. Randy came to my house on time for the original quote and we discussed materials and the design plan. I found his prices reasonable from what I researched and he was honest about the cost from the start. It was too easy! He did a fantastic job and I couldn't be happier. I now have a paver walkway, 2 stone walls and new front lawn!! I would hire him again without hesitation!

You know it's crazy that when you read reviews and all the ratings were Five Stars then you read a review that seems to me like a vindictive person. To me it's like "Wow" I didn't have any issues with JDQ. I do realize that there are some control freaks out there that once you finally put a stop to all the belittling and complaining they have to some way shape or form try to destroy a good hard worker reputation. When I was calling around for a professional handyman and builder I was so out of my realm. I spoke with many different businesses, most left me feeling like I didn't know what I was talking about and crazy for some projects I wanted complete. I even had them come to my home and what a mistake that was. Stone-age coming back in full force! I was at my dentist and there was a JDQ business card, first thing I saw that made me comfortable was that Mr. Quintal is a veteran, then I called him and what a pleasure! Of course after the last companies I spoke to I was gun shy to ask for what I want completed. Mr. Quintal suggested that he should come to my home and have me walk him through all the projects I would like to have completed. When he pulled in my driveway, about 15 minutes early, he had A tape measure, pencils and crazy builder paper. He walked me through all the steps that he would have to do to complete my projects, never leaving anything out. He didn't make me feel like I was a moron and he was very respectful. When we walk through some of the steps for the project the suggestions that he had were brilliant! I would have never of thought of it, and deftly didn't see it on Pinterest. I felt so comfortable with JDQ that once we agreed on which product to start first I let Mr. Quintal have a free-for-all to add any ideas that he seemed to fit. Before any adjustments were needed he would run it by me first and try to find the best bargain for the supplies. He is definitely the best woodworker/builder besides my father and that setting the bar pretty high! So thank you Mr. Quintal for fitting me in while you were working with that crazy lady, your full calendar and making my project dreams come true and even better that I first imagined. Now when I have company over to my house I get so many compliments on the work completed it makes me gitty and want more completed. I genuinely feel that JDQ is worth every cent I paid him. Everybody out there before you call anybody else call Mr. Quintal and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. So thank you JDQ for all your hard work and sweat poured into my home. Your forever future customer sincerely, PIC! Happy Veteran's Day!

We had them excavate trees and brush near the lawn and they did a great job. We had them make a stone moat for drainage and they also did a great job. Only problem was that we were not told the day they were coming and the workers were different from the owner who we explained the project to . They pruned and weeded and we were less satisfied with that aspect. We would hire them again and their prices were fair.

Jim has worked at my home for the last three years. Each year something a little different. The first two years he built both sets of my Brick/Granite Steps. Then next year he created a Walkway from my steps to my driveway, granite mailbox post and just recently built me a large Stone Patio with a Fire Pit. I have been so pleased with his work. He is great at visualizing the job to help me understand what will look best with colors, and types of stone. Jim is honest, professional, reasonably priced, and always is here to do the work. Thinking of my next project.

E-W came at agreed upon times for both estimate and project date. Work was completed ahead of estimated time and to us, the homeowners, as described and promised. Had a 2 foot high 15 foot long stone wall reassembled and motored. Also, an additional 5 foot long 5 feet high stone wall section needed much repair, both areas taken care of as stated.

Jake Shivo of JSP Tree Landscape Construction I cannot say enough on how professional he is. I had a number of landscapers walk away because my yard was so bad. It had 28 years with nothing ever done to it. Jake took on the yard. Started the end of June 2014 and finished October 2014. He also is a great sub-contractor. I had 18 trees removed and stumps removed, irragation, new and enlarged 4 cars dtiveway and a new stone walk and Jake sub-comtracted it. I also had stone walls built. Jake keeps working until he is satisfied. Jake also came back this summer to make sure my grass was thick and health. I have a beautiful thick lawn thanks to Jake. I had a postcard of how I wanted my yard to look and Jake delivered. Jake also gave me a nice big firepit which we used a lot this summer. I don't normally give a review for anythng, but Jake deserve every bit of it. Thank You Jake Linda

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
