Wayne provided a great roofing solution. He attended to the immediate problem (replacing shingling and replacing plywood) and went above and beyond (restored chimney and flu flashing and exhaust flang). He was easy to work with and stayed in touch to accommodate my schedule. The cost was just what he quoted. Could not have had a better experience. I recommend Wayne for all your roofing needs.

I heard about BHI from a friend and called them to get an estimate on a new roof for my house. They were over 20% less than the nearest roof estimate that I received (I had called 3 other roofing companies). They were there within 2 weeks and they finished the job in 3 days, cleaned up all debris and the roof looks amazing! That was in May and since then they have built a deck for my best friend, roofed my brother's house, sided and roofed a commercial building that I own and they have just finished a foundation repair and are adding a large addition to a rental house of mine. Their work is great and they always follow MA building code and their rates are difficult to beat on any project. I don't even bother comparing estimates anymore because I am confident that Curt, Rob and the crew will always give me a great job at an honest price. Feel free to contact me and I will personally show you the work that they have done for me.

Paul helped repair our basement's structural problem that was revealed after a water leak from our kitchen ruined our basement ceiling. He came up with a solution by adding an additional support post next to the existing one and tied the support beams in. The posts were sheet rocked and made into a beautiful column. The support beam above was sheet rocked as well and was tied in nicely. He re-installed the basement ceiling tile system as well. My basement looks better than it did before the water damage! No more ugly metal posts in the middle of our basement. I actually enjoy being down there now. Paul went the extra mile by offering to add in a sheet rock repair in my kitchen that had been annoying me for a while. Paul started and completed the project the same week he quoted us a price.

We were really pleased with Keith's work. He gave us a very reasonable estimate for the job (not by the hour) and stuck to it. He was fast, thorough and cleaned up after he was done. We had Keith remove 3 very overgrown shrubs and a pesky ,run rampant HUGE trumpet vine that had grown under the garage siding and was coming out the roof. He removed all of them, pulled the stumps and created a garden area in the space. (I think Keith will be posting a picture of the work) We will definitively hire Keith again Joan Mirantz

I want to say that my experience working with John DeNisco was overwhelmingly positive. His thoroughness, punctuality, attention to detail-everything was so impressive. And my neighbor stopped by to ask him for a roofing quote. Not only did he respond to her request, he did the job that day in addition to mine. Her reaction was the same as mine. I would heartily recommend John to anyone who asks! sincerely, Ralph Fowler

My wood flooring needed to be ordered so I have not yet had the floor installed. I will follow up with a updated review and pictures one the floor is completed. Can't wait!!

Mike has worked at both our homes. He has done numerous jobs for us. Roofing, siding, windows, large deck along with other smaller jobs. He is our first call when thinking of any project large or small because of the quality of work that is always consistently top notch. I highly recommend Kater construction. I attached a photo of our home that everything you see in the photo was done by Kater construction.

HP Roofing recently replaced our garage and porch roofs. We got great advise on materials and applications, the job was done on budget and on time, and they didn't leave a big mess in the yard. And the guys worked around my wife's cherished flowers gardens with no damage. I also recently recommended HP Roofing to another business and they fixed his leaking roof as well

A++ experience with an outfit new to Thumbtack. We asked Matt's company to assess our roofing and found we needed a replacement of about 70% (we confirmed we did, too, after seeing the sorry state of the old shingles). Matt & Co. were fantastic from the quoting process right thru to job completion -- which they did in nearly one day! Matt is a rare find in that he's truly understanding of bugetary concerns and not only amended our initial quote to better fit, but offered an even more forgiving solution to consider. You can easily tell he and his people know their stuff and our new roof looks great! We discovered later that they went above and beyond what we even expected. Additionally, we found them responsive and friendly, all job debris was throughly cleaned up, and even our request to remove shoes when coming inside was heeded without question or repeating. Matt also told us not to hesitate to let him know any issues with the work and he would come right out to address. When we asked about other projects besides masonry and roofing, the reply was "everything but landscaping". :) We have a 145yo home and plan to have them back for many more projects. If you hate shopping around for contractors as much as we do and look to extend your loyalty once you find a good match, Matt Nelson is a keeper -- thanks guys!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
