Joe came here to fix our garbage disposal, which he did quickly and also advised us on some other home repair questions we had - also was super considerate, even made sure cats were ok while he was looking at some swelling on our patio door frame (door was open)

This was my first Thumbtack experience, and I'm glad I was working with Robert from Reliable Handyman Services. He took the time to understand the issue and, even though he only had pictures I texted him, provided a reasonable quote prior to starting the work. He was always prompt when replying to my Thumbtack messages and text messages. He showed up on time, did a great job, resolved the issue the first time, and stayed true to his original quote as nothing unexpected popped up during the repair. I'm not sure about other companies on this site, but I would definitely recommend this one.

I would highly recommend John for your home repair work. He was punctual for the estimate and came right at the time he said he would for the repair work. He was reasonably priced and I felt he was honest. I needed a few boards replaced in my deck which had rotted. The work he did was quality work and exactly what I asked for and he didn't try to up-sell which I appreciated. I would hire him again and will recommend him to others.

Did a great job and explained everything he did to optimize and repair my steam boiler and radiators. Now they pump out so much heat it's incredible. Very fair price too with everything itemized on the receipt. Highly recommended.

Jason did a phenomenal job at about 1/3 the cost of other quotes I received. He installed electrical outlets above two wood burning fireplaces, mounted a 55 TV above one of them, including threading the A/V wires horizontally across the wall and across studs, and added a few other new outlets throughout the house. I had a bunch of home theatre companies come out and tell me how complicated my TV mounting job was going to be and gave me absurd timetables and quotes. Jason came by and completed all the jobs perfectly in 6 hours. Also, unlike other electricians that I’ve had, Jason didn’t make a mess and spackled all the holes in the wall. I highly recommend Jason and will definitely hire him again for my next job (recessed and exterior lighting).

Mark Dubois's Custom Carpentry did an amazing job finishing our basement. Our new space includes a 3/4 bathroom, game room and workout area. Mark even designed and built custom built-ins, making the final product exceed our expectations. Mark was in constant communication, prompt, neat (always cleaned up before leaving) and did high quality work within our budget. We also hired Mark to replace two exterior doors and repair some cracked floor tiles. Highly recommend.

I hired Dennis for one repair. He noticed other things on my property that I needed repaired and took care of everything promptly. I had previously had a hard time finding another contractor who would take care of what they considered to be a small job. Dennis was professional and completed all the work timely and at the agreed price. I have already asked him to come back and take care of more projects I need completed.

Chad fixed a 35 year-old, cranky, crank-out, casement window in my home today. This was a very tricky project, and Chad went above and beyond: looking for solutions online, contacting the manufacturer, etc. Someone else might have given up, but he stuck with it. He doesn’t like not being able to figure out a problem. He is very courteous, wears booties in the house, cleans up everything when he’s finished (and believe me, not everyone does this). He fixed my window, and I would not hesitate to hire him again to do work in my home. Very fair pricing as well. Great service!

We hired Van to repair some drywall and paint some of the interior rooms of our home. He arrived and gave an estimate. Then he came back at another time to meet with us to discuss exactly what we wanted done. He was timely and professional and very courteous. He came back the next day for five days to take care of all the things we needed to fix and paint. He and his partner showed up at the exact same time everyday and put in a full day's work. Everyday when they left, they left my home very neat and tidy and were very diligent about that. They did an awesome job. It looks great. I felt they were trustworthy and if I need more work done, would definitely hire them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
