OMG! Hands down, your search ends here. Bill and Wendy are phenomenal; so responsive to email and phone calls. Conducted a site visit and offered sample tastings without being asked. Food was excellent. They did a mid-afternoon reception with about 10 different appetizers/desserts outside in 90 degree heat for 200 people. Presentation was gorgeous. Cold stuff remained cold, hot stuff remained hot, everything was beautiful and stayed replenished. Their demeanor is incredible. The only thing that people complimented more than the food was the catering staff. Truly you will not go wrong with them. 10 years as a innkeeper and 4 years as an event coordinator, I'm a critical judge of quality and service. I give them 5 stars without reservation. Thank you Bill & Wendy for making the 2017 USM Staff Recognition Event a very special day. People loved you and your food! I was helping my brother who is a Malden City Council planning an event for his ward. We used first class parties to do the food and the experience was excellent. I manager catering company in Florida and communicated with him from Florida and he died with my brother in Massachusetts. The reports I got were glowing and my brother had nothing but good things to say about Eric and his crew. We would have no hesitations and using him again know what I hesitate in recommending him to anyone thinking of using him. Thank you from the people of Ward 6 in Malden and happy Fourth of July.

I would highly recommend Little Miss Sophie's Catering services!! Jessica was amazing, as was her food. Our caterer pulled out 2 weeks before the wedding and Sue and Jessica jumped in and handled everything perfectly. The food was fantastic and Little Miss Sophie's saved the day (in many ways). Highly recommend!!! Thank you.

I have used TMT private chef services twice now. My guests were so impressed with Tanya as was I. The food was prepared perfectly and tasted incredible. It felt like we were dining in a 5 star resturant right at my home. The first party we hired TMT for was a dinner for 8 of my best clients. It was very important I impress them and we did just that! The second party was more casual, about 30 of my family members for a birthday celebration. Tanya prepared a Buffet style lunch and dinner with options for both the adults and children. Tanya and her team then cleaned everything and left my kitchen as if nothing ever happened! It was a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the party without having to constantly run around. I would recommend TMT private chef services to anyone looking to host an event.

William was amazing for our Corporate Picnic! After working with him on a menu, he came up with an collaborated with me on the perfect menu for my company as well as making sure that our vegetarian co-workers needs were met. He was wonderful in reassuring me that the event would still be wonderful even with our in climate weather of rain but he was well prepared with a tent of his own and came promptly to set up before guests arrived. He was quick on his feet and brought his partner Jennifer who attended to our needs as well as assisted in running food to our buffet line to keep it warm and stocked for the slow accrual of guests. Since then, everyone has been raving about the food, especially the steak tips! They were an amazing team, the food was spectacular and I wholeheartedly would recommend them for any catering that you could need. They went above and beyond.

We had an Indian fusion wedding last weekend at an off-site venue, and Simply Elegant Catering did a fantastic job. We originally contacted SEC to provide full service catering and American style food, with the intent of having another restaurant provide Indian food. However, SEC’s chef offered to make the Indian food for our tasting, and it was delicious. As a result, SEC caterered both style menus. They also worked with us to develop a mostly vegetarian menu to meet the needs of the groom and many of our guests. A few of our guests actually commented that it was the best wedding food they’ve ever had. Sam of SEC was very helpful and responsive, and his entire staff seemed eager to work with us to help make our event run smoothly and meet our wishes. And SEC’s services were very reasonably priced. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about SEC, and would recommend them to anyone looking for delicious food with friendly service.

Chef Reed and and his staff of culinarians and service staff provided a wonderful holiday feast for Phillips Exeter Academy. The attention to flavor profiles, detail in execution in all the selections were exceptional. Chef Reed attended all planning meetings, developed all the menus based on a shared vision while providing timely quotes. The wait-staff were professional, well presented and attentive to guests while ensuring the food presentation were maintained. I would highly recommend Thyme and TIDE Catering.

From the opening inquiry to the post-event follow up, Maine-ly Meatballs was a first rate caterer. Jeanne worked with us to create a menu and was experienced enough to guide us. The food was delicious! We had traditional marinara, Asian style with slaw and cheeseburger sliders, with sides of salad and macaroni and cheese. We had 80 guests and every single one of them raved about their balls. Additionally, Jeanne is super nice, friendly and professional. As a hostess she was in my corner, helping to be sure the party was successful.

We hired Theresa to cater our wedding reception and couldn't have been happier. We were so lucky to have found her! Our first 2 caterers both just disappeared after making the commitment and Theresa saved the day with just 3 weeks before our wedding. Since we were having an Irish/Scottish wedding we requested a buffet with a variety of savory pies and not only did she accept the challenge but her food was amazing!! Everyone raved about it, especially the Steak & Ale Pie. She made absolutely beautiful "display" pies for each type of pie served, which was a really nice touch. Theresa had to deal with no stove/oven at the venue and a warming rack that didn't work and somehow still pulled it all off! Throughout it all she was calm and supportive and made me feel like I had nothing to worry to about, and she was right! I highly recommend her and will definitely use her again the next time we need a caterer. She is fantastic (and also an award winning pastry chef!). Our only regret was that we had already committed to having another vendor do our cupcakes otherwise we would have had Theresa do our dessert as well. She is an excellent caterer and a really warm, genuine person. We highly recommend her!

Out of the Box Catering did a phenomenal job. They hand delivered delicious food that that was packaged beautifully. They were even slightly early to my event which made my job much easier. They followed up multiple times leading up to the event to verify my needs and schedule which meant I never had to track them down or worry. I would definitely recommend them!

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

          • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
          • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
          • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
          • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
          • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
          • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
