Steve responded very quickly and was out to install our fence within a week. We had some existing fence and asked if he could tie into it and build us a dog kennel. It came out great and the dogs love it! Thanks Steve! Job well done. ~ Matt

Fabulous experience with Sam! I submitted my job at 9:30am and he was on-site at 11am. He had all the tools needed and was flexible about working around my two dogs and the house cleaners who arrived at the same time. The instructions for the assembly were a bit confusing (and just plain wrong at times!), but that didn’t slow him down. I was also pleased that he cleaned everything up and moved the coat rack (which he was assembling) into position and placed all the other items that were on the room in their proper place. Highly recommend!!! Thanks, Sam 😊

Pat was contracted to build a new deck off the back of my house. He was quick to respond to my initial inquiry, showed up the next day and got me a quote within a few hours. His prices are very fair and his work speaks for itself. He answered phone calls and texts right away and made sure delivery of all materials was handled and scheduled in a timely manner. I would highly recommend Pat and his team for your next deck project.

He cleaned the gutters on my house and detached garage. He was punctual, efficient, cleaned up everything. Already recommended him to a friend. Would definitely hire him for other projects.

Recently Bob Kohn helped us to remodel our basement room (aka "the dogs' room) and the laundry room. They had been done in 1980's paneling and were dark, unattractive and depressing to be blunt. With some of Bob's recommendations and his talented craftsmanship these rooms are now bright, open and welcoming. Truthfully, they are too nice to keep as the dogs' room, but my canine friends will continue to live in the new airy space! We have also added some gym equipment to the room as we need makeovers too!!! Thanks Bob. Seriously, Bob is talented, extremely professional, and cleans up daily from his work better than I clean the house!! If you have a project, need ideas or suggestions, call him. I can assure you that you will be a truly satisfied customer, as I am!!

Hiring Russ was a HUGE WIN! I was in the middle of putting my house on the market and needed someone who could help me with all the little odds and ends to get my house ready to show. Russ was awesome! He helped with everything including building a new stair railing and installing a pocket door in my master bathroom. He always had the right tools and the best attitude no matter what the project. From replacing missing pieces of trim to helping repair walls, he was always helpful, courteous and neat, plus his recommendations about what to do and what not to bother with were a Godsend. I can not recommend Russ enough.

Frank did an excellent job building a custom 4 season room. He interpreted and built exactly what I had in mind with a great eye for detail. His concern for customer satisfaction was a novelty in comparison to past work I’ve had done.

You know it's crazy that when you read reviews and all the ratings were Five Stars then you read a review that seems to me like a vindictive person. To me it's like "Wow" I didn't have any issues with JDQ. I do realize that there are some control freaks out there that once you finally put a stop to all the belittling and complaining they have to some way shape or form try to destroy a good hard worker reputation. When I was calling around for a professional handyman and builder I was so out of my realm. I spoke with many different businesses, most left me feeling like I didn't know what I was talking about and crazy for some projects I wanted complete. I even had them come to my home and what a mistake that was. Stone-age coming back in full force! I was at my dentist and there was a JDQ business card, first thing I saw that made me comfortable was that Mr. Quintal is a veteran, then I called him and what a pleasure! Of course after the last companies I spoke to I was gun shy to ask for what I want completed. Mr. Quintal suggested that he should come to my home and have me walk him through all the projects I would like to have completed. When he pulled in my driveway, about 15 minutes early, he had A tape measure, pencils and crazy builder paper. He walked me through all the steps that he would have to do to complete my projects, never leaving anything out. He didn't make me feel like I was a moron and he was very respectful. When we walk through some of the steps for the project the suggestions that he had were brilliant! I would have never of thought of it, and deftly didn't see it on Pinterest. I felt so comfortable with JDQ that once we agreed on which product to start first I let Mr. Quintal have a free-for-all to add any ideas that he seemed to fit. Before any adjustments were needed he would run it by me first and try to find the best bargain for the supplies. He is definitely the best woodworker/builder besides my father and that setting the bar pretty high! So thank you Mr. Quintal for fitting me in while you were working with that crazy lady, your full calendar and making my project dreams come true and even better that I first imagined. Now when I have company over to my house I get so many compliments on the work completed it makes me gitty and want more completed. I genuinely feel that JDQ is worth every cent I paid him. Everybody out there before you call anybody else call Mr. Quintal and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. So thank you JDQ for all your hard work and sweat poured into my home. Your forever future customer sincerely, PIC! Happy Veteran's Day!

We hired Haven Hill to design and restore our 200 year old summer home so that we could live there full time. We had an amazing experience with them and our house is perfect. We never thought it could be so perfect. We love our custom kitchen, cement countertops, and spray foam insulation. We put radiant heat floors with solar hot water and are amazed at how efficient the home is. These guys are truly artists and you will not be let down with their work! -Pat and Dick South Bristol

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
