We hired First-Rate Moving to move all our household belongings (furniture, boxes, everything) out of a 10x25 storage locker and into our new townhome. We had the pleasure of having Jay, the owner and one of his crew members complete our move. At the beginning of the planning process, Jay really took the time to understand our moving needs to provide us with as accurate a quote as possible. He was also incredibly responsive to all correspondence throughout the planning process, whether it was by phone, email or text. He also kept us updated on their arrival time, as we were their second job for the day. The pricing was competitive and very fair. The quotes and correspondence I received from other moving companies for this particular move were outrageous and the other moving companies I contacted were not nearly as responsive or as helpful as Jay. When moving day finally arrived Jay and his crew member were pleasant, respectful, careful, & efficient. I am pleased to say that not a single one of our belongings was damaged or broken by them during the move, and we have some really big and heavy furniture that isn’t easily maneuverable. They really took the time to make sure that they used blankets to cover the furniture so it didn’t get scratched in the truck and they also made the most out of the space in their truck and packed everything efficiently, & securely. I can’t say enough nice things about Jay and his crew, and First-Rate Moving. I can without a doubt say that I would absolutely recommend this company, and if the need ever arises again, I would use this company again for any future move. Thank you Jay & First-Rate Moving!

The crew from Hebert could not have been better, professional, personable, and well organized. They quickly assessed the items we had to move and went right to work packing the truck securely. The process of unloading and setting up furniture in our new home was equally efficient. I'm very happy to have found Hebert on Thumbtack and appreciate the reviews and recommendations provided. With so many good moving companies to chose from it's great to have assistance from Thumbtack to help. Having 3 guys in this crew was perfect for getting the job done fast. Hebert did their best and it showed.

John and John were on time, worked quickly and efficiently to fill up my trailer with all the heavy furniture that I needed moved, and were less expensive than bigger moving companies. John was also very quick to respond to any messages. I would hire them again!

The men were very professional, polite and quick yet careful not to damage anything. Everything was carefully padded and packed into the truck. They were punctual and finished sooner than expected... didn't even want to stop for lunch which was my treat. Would definitely recommend them to anyone. A much different experience than what I have dealt with in the past with other moving companies.

We purchased a house which needed a great deal of lawn clean-up. There was trash embedded in a foot of leaves across 450 sq ft from years' worth of careless tenants. We explained the situation to Rakin' It In and they offered us the best quote among many companies. Many companies refused to take the project or wanted to charge us an extraordinate amount of money since the project was such a pain in the ass. For that, I owe Rakin' It In a great deal of gratitude. So they come while me and the hub are at work. We come home and the leaves have been blown back to where we asked but there is still trash in the lawn. Our original request was that the trash and the leaves get removed. When we called to follow up, they told us that they were not going to dig through the ground for trash. While this was fair, and while they did take a great deal of the trash which was on top of the leaves, there were remains of trash just lying on the ground, not buried. We did not feel like the amount of work which they did for us was worth what we paid them. To their credit, they agreed that we could dig up whatever trash we wanted them to take, put it in a pile, and they would come again and dispose of it. Hub and I spent two hours raking and picking up trash. Within a few days, Rakin' It In came back and took not just the piles of pure trash, but also a large pile of dirt mixed with trash that the hub had piled up to get off of our lawn. Hub dealt with the company on the phone but it seemed like we did not get too much pushback from requesting that they come back a second time to finish the job. It truly was a pain in the ass job and I appreciate that they took it on for such a reasonable rate.

Project went well. Dave responded promptly and knowledgeably to my initial inquiry, provided a quote that was within 10% of the final price. Dave worked around our vacation schedule, and provided clean, quick service. In the entire project, there was only one small hiccup-- I spoke to Dave and he quickly resolved it to our satisfaction. Floor looks perfect and we've started moving in.

After speaking with a few local companies I decided to go with East Coast Painting & Remodeling. The owner has responded quickly to any questions that I've had, helped me chose colors and gave me a fair price for painting my new house. Its nice to have true professionals helping me and it lessens the stress of moving knowing that I'm in good hands. I'm excited to see the end result and move in! I would defintely recommend this company & will continue to use them for future work.

The price quoted was the best price of all companies I spoke to. The results were awesome. Many companies don't have carpet cleaning capabilities but they do offer this service. I got the works for an affordable price and it was high quality work. I would totally reccommend using!

Can't say enough about Mike Roberts and his team. He and his gardeners took a sad looking front garden and turned it into a beautifully manicured and designed flower bed. He and his crew also reset and straightened a large and heavy business sign that hadn't been moved in years and the final effect is awesome. This company does it all They are dependable, punctual, and straight forward and very reasonable on their bids. Perfect example of how a business should be run and we look forward to using their services again.

We hired Elizabeth for a Move in cleaning. She was professional and thorough. She arrived promptly as scheduled and the results of her cleaning were amazing. The home we purchased was next level dirty from the previous owner but with help from Elizabeth and MPS, we were able to move in as scheduled and get right to the business of setting up a home. Without the amazing work she did we would still be cleaning ourselves. We will definitely be contacting her for a recurring job.

Deb Hurley helped us redecorate our house to make it more desirable as a vacation property rental. Deb has great tastes and was able to pick our nice, reasonable choices to make our home look great. With some small changes we were able to update our look quite a bit. Deb picked out new bedding, curtains and lamps for us. She worked with us to change around our furniture to open the rooms up and eliminate clutter. Deb also helped us update our old bathroom to make it look modern. We would highly recommend Deb Hurley's services. Don and Arlene Stoppe Ashland, NH

I had a great experience working with EZ Movers! They came highly recommended to me. When I called them for an estimate they came right over, did a walk-through, gave me a price that they stuck to you with no hidden fees, showed up early on moving day and worked nonstop for hours until the last piece of furniture was put in its place. Super accommodating and respectful!

We had a great experience with Affinity Packing & Moving. I didn't choose Affinity, because we moved out to repair fire damage the insurance company selected the vendor. However, I would use them again in the future. They did an excellent job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
