Both my son and I had an amazing experience with Katya! She tailored her teaching techniques to make the material more engaging and made my son excited about learning and tracking his improvement after each lesson. Besides providing guidance and helping with practice tests she provided invaluable test taking and memory retention tips. She was very responsive and accommodating, willing to work with our schedules to make sure my son had enough hours of practice before his exam. I highly recommend Katya to anyone looking for SAT tutoring as she is worth every penny.

Daniel's tutoring experience and knowledge of the material was key to our daughters acceptance to Bergen County Technical HS. Daniel always arrived on time for each lesson and always came prepared. We were also happy that he gave homework assignments to work on for the next lesson. Our overall experience was great. We will definitely contact Daniel again.

My daughter has had two ACT sessions with Denny. He is patient and is completely understanding of her needs. Denny is not only well organized, patient and thorough, but he also goes beyond in providing lesson plans; he assigns her home work daily to help her avoid procrastination. Excellent tutor! Professional, well prepared! Extremely smart, but still very patient, positive and encouraging when someone doesn't understand a concept. Highly recommend him for ACT prep!!!!

Mr. Michael is an excellent tutor. He puts his students first and has been very compassionate towards me during the time he conducted lessons with me. He never made money his priority. Whenever we had lessons, he would always be prepared and bring enough material that would carry me throughout the week. I am extremely grateful for his service and I would recommend him to anyone who is looking for an excellent tutor.

Marc helped me get from a 1250 to a 1330 on only 4 weeks. He’s a great guy and truly knows and understands what he’s talking about. He doesn’t make the lessons feel like lessons at all, they are very easy to learn from and sit through.

About

Fluent City classes are geared towards learning, but we also make sure that the process is super fun. Our energetic and approachable teachers create a relaxed environment for you to take on the challenge of learning a language alongside like-minded people. There is a huge difference between knowing how to speak a language and knowing how to teach it, and we pride ourselves on hiring teachers who are ridiculously good at what they do: explaining how the language works and getting you to speak it immediately. Our beginner classes are usually taught by non-native speakers…on purpose! They are often Americans who learned the language themselves as adults. Our teachers understand, firsthand, everything that goes into learning a language because they were once students of the language themselves, which informs the very way they explain how it works to you. Native speakers or teachers with native-level fluency usually teach our higher-level classes.

About

I tutor French. French is my native language. I mainly concentrate on conversational French and adapt the lessons to the student's interests and needs.

About

I am an academic writer who is specialized in both English and Spanish languages. I translate documents, write reviews for companies, and teach Spanish to foreigners and English to Spanish speakers. My classes are interactive and didactic. I use a website, Edmodo, to teach my lessons. I am flexible with time, and if there is something to translate on time, I can work under pressure.

About

Teach Spanish lessons, so the person can speak and understand the language. This person may speak to me. I will also teach him/her to write and read the language.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
