I live in Monroe, NY and had been planning a sixtieth birthday surprise party for my husband, at the end of January. I intended on doing the party on my own. I had an unfortunate accident, which involved surgery to my arm, in November. I was disappointed, but soon realized my limitations.
As December rolled around I couldnt get that party out of my head. Stuck in the house, I decided to do a web search for caterers. It was now December 17th, the party would have been in six weeks.
My search led me to an interesting web site, Thumbtack.com. You simply enter the service you are looking for, your zip code, answer various questions in regards to your needs. Next, you are contacted by email, with several referrals, to fit your needs. There were absolutely no annoying phone calls. You contact whoever you would like to get more information from. I took a chance, contacting some of the caterers suggested.
They were interesting and probably would have done a good job. No one had really peaked my interest, as yet. They all seemed to repeat the same thing. I was becoming a little disappointed.
I then spoke with Peter Van Markwyk, aka, http://www.twopeascateringny.com. He listened to what I had in mind. I was discussing a party for 20-25 people with him. He treated me as though I was planning a reception for 200. He began to suggest different options.
Within a short time Peter had put together a sample menu and emailed me. He could tell from our conversation what he felt I had in mind. The menu suggestions based on our discussion, hit the nail right on the head. Anything I chose to change, or substitute, done! He also included the list of services provided, that were included. He would supply everything, except the bar set up, which we had agreed on.
I repeat, he would be responsible for all of his setup, food preparation, and clean up. He would also supply upscale, disposable dinnerware (which to this day, I still believe was glass!)
The party was extremely affordable! Why would I have gone any other way? My accident was a blessing in disguise! I was able to be a part of my party, spending time with everyone. Usually I was stuck in the kitchen, sending out food.
The day of the party was here. Peter arrived with Paige (his partner), exactly at 2:00, as planned. This was just six weeks after our initial conversation!
They quickly commandeered my kitchen. Peter and Paige were in control. Every course timed to perfection, with an ample amount of time for each, no rushing. Every detail was checked and double checked. Both insisted I go relax, get ready for my guests, and not to worry, everything would be perfect. I must include, with each email Peter and I exchanged, he never forgot to sign off by adding Dont worry, everything will be perfect!
I watched, briefly, as they began to prepare. It was as though they had been in my kitchen, before. Within minutes chafing dishes were in place, everything was in motion. I comfortably left them to do their thing, knowing Everything would be perfect.
As my guests arrived they watched in amazement, as the two of them worked together like a well-oiled machine! There was nothing overlooked, they observed everything. If there was an empty wine glass, miraculously it was washed, dried and back in place, before you could blink an eye. They were extremely professional, but found time to talk and joke with our guests, who watched the magic unfold. They could not have been more congenial with all of our friends and family. It was as though we had all known each other for years.
Peters menu was to include:
Hot and Cold Appetizers:
Dijon Chicken Bites (Tangy Dijon mustard blended with chicken, cream cheese, and garlic wrapped in folded filo dough) INCREDIBLE!
Beef pinwheels (with Asiago cheese and wilted spinach) TENDER AND DELICIOUS
Mini Crab cake bites with tartar sauce YUMMM!
Greek salad bites (feta cheese, cucumber, olive and a cherry tomato on a skewer with drizzled olive oil and black pepper) LIGHT AND FLAVORFUL, ALMOST REFRESHING. REALLY GREAT!
Penne ala vodka, SUPER!
Salmon with Dill Sauce
Garlic and Herb Beef Rib Roast with a Mushroom Gravy, sliced to order. ALL WERE EXCEPTIONAL!
BY THIS TIME THE COMPLIMENTS WERE FLYING FAST AND FURIOUS FROM ALL OUR GUESTS! OH, LETS NOT FORGET THE REST OF THE MENU, PREPARED AS METICULOUSLY AND DELICIOUSLY, AS EACH DISH BEFORE IT.
Sautéed Mixed Vegetables with red, yellow, and green peppers, carrots, and broccoli
Green Beans with Butter and Parmesan Cheese
Roasted Fingerling Potatoes, with Rosemary
Mini Chocolate Mousse Cups (PETER MAKES THE MOUSSE, IT IS AMAZING) (truth be told, I hid some extras for myself, I think my son found them, all gone! Could you disown your son for stealing your mousse cups?)
Fruit Salad DONT KNOW HOW TO IMPROVE ON FRUIT SALAD, THEY DID!
Birthday Cake, I had seen a picture of a birthday cake (with a price tag that was obscene). Peter had the cake duplicated from the picture I provided, IT WAS A PERFECT LIKENESS TO THE PICTURE, AND DELICIOUS! I COULD ALSO ENJOY IT, WITHOUT CHOKING! (lol)
The food, which was in overabundance, was simply outstanding! Everything was cooked to perfection. All of the dishes including appetizers had small, lovely printed card describing each selection.
Peter and Paige arrived at 2:00, by 8:30, I could see them getting their things together. They had provided me with more than six and ½ hours of time. I went over to talk to them. They explained they would be leaving. I wanted to pull my husband over so that he could thank them. They told me not to. Their job was complete, they would leave without any fanfare. It was time for us to enjoy our family! What a thoughtful way to exit!
I looked around my kitchen in disbelief. There was not so much as a crumb left behind. My counters were empty with the exception of two coffee pots, still in use. My refrigerator was filled with all the left overs, packaged perfectly. AMAZING!
MY EXPECTATIONS WERE EXCEEDED. THIS WAS BETTER THAN ANYTHING I COULD HAVE IMAGINED.
AT MY REQUEST I ASKED PETER TO USE ME AS A REFERENCE!
I HATE TO HIT SEND, I KNOW I HAVE FORGOTTEN SOMETHING!
THEY WERE INDESCRIBABLY WONDERFUL FROM DAY ONE. IN SIX WEEKS THEY
PROVIDED ME WITH THE PARTY OF MY DREAMS!
THANK YOU PETER, AND PAIGE!
OH, PLEASE, ONE FINAL THOUGHT
BELIEVE ME, DONT WORRY, EVERYTHING WILL BE PERFECT!
AND IT WAS!
