This was our first time using Thumbtack so we really didn't know what to expect but Manny made it into a positive experience. Manny was responsive, informative, and professional. He came to our residence on time and started the work right away. He quickly got our vanity plumbing working which had issues with a clog and pipe installation. He also unclogged our tub. We highly recommend Manny and would work with him again!

Gary was great to work with! He handled what I considered to be a two-person job all by himself. He was very efficient, finishing the job promptly while taking the time to assess if things were meeting my expectations. He even offered to fix a broken safety gate he noticed needed fixing on his way out...what I nice gesture....bonus points! I'd not hesitate to hire him again.

I hired James to install outside lighting in my driveway and backyard. He arrived promptly for our consultation and really took his time to explain the project. He was very knowledgeable and personable. He completed the job flawlessly and neatly and made sure I was completely happy with the job. Because of this I hired him to install lights in my closet the very next day. Again, he arrived on time and completed the project quickly and efficiently. He took time to even clean the area he worked in with a vacuum and windex which was impressive to me. It is without reservation that I would recommend James . He is an absolute pleasure to work with!

The driveway had steps to the walkway and I could never snowblower it. Matt replaced it was a gentle slope walkway that is much easier to maintain. Fair price. Did the job when he promised he would. Three years later and they look the same as the day he poured the cement.

David was referred to me through a family member and from the moment he responded to my voicemail I new he was extremely professional. I need construction debris removed from my backyard and driveway in a very timely manner. David was not only pleasant to communicate with but very flexible with his prices. He offered me a very fair quote after I sent him pictures of the debris. The night prior to the service is rained and a section of the debris was severely wet. David showed up ready to work and completed the project without me even knowing he was there! Minus all the Junk being taken away :) I admire his dedication and strong work ethic. It is very hard to find that these days! Please do not hesitate booking David for your next project, he will exceed your expectations!

Let me begin with dates and facts: My house was listed for sale on Zillow and Trulia on Friday-February 17th. There were 7 showings between Saturday and Monday. Tuesday-February 21st-I received the 1st offer. Today-Wednesday-February 22nd-my house was listed on the MLS. So far-there are 3 scheduled showings for today-2 for Thursday-1 for Friday. The house is located in a transitional neighborhood which ordinarily does not generate interest-and typically houses may sit 6 months or longer before receiving an offer. Luckily-my entire home was renovated by Smart Improvement Corporation; and they do extraordinary work! So here’s the story-I needed to sell my house built in about 1902 that had been updated with D.I.Y. fixes from the 70’s and 80’s. I remember speaking to Valdemir by phone to schedule: Just something-maybe painting 1 or 2 rooms? Really-I had no idea what improvements to make. Valdemir and Wilson arrived promptly 1 day later-Blue Smart Improvement Parkas to the rescue! Wilson took transcribed notes and Valdemir took pictures. Within 1 day-Wilson emailed a plan-which I rejected--thinking more in terms of quick and passable. I am so glad that S.I.C.is not capable of mediocre work. They aim to provide “perfect work”. Anyway- No problem -immediately-plan 2.0 was created and sent. And-that is how with mindful, strategic, intelligent thinking-meticulous attention to the smallest details-and creative financial decisions-each room was transformed picture perfect with S.I.C’s. signature flat white walls and semi-gloss trim-becoming? Uniform-Clear-Simple-Symmetrical-Balanced and Beautiful. 7 rooms completely transformed (ceilings-walls-floor-doors-fixtures removed and replaced) within just several weeks-How? Of course-hard work was involved: They worked 8:00 AM to 5-5:30 PM-5-6 days a week. I expressed concern that I never saw any traces that they had eaten lunch-I related to a friend that I thought they may be angels? And-so protective of your home: Double checking that doors and gates are locked before leaving. And-so super easy and stress-free from start to finish (yes-they complete the whole job-thank you!). They really listen to your concerns -Making accurate choices-Finding the right solutions every step of the process. Each night when I came home from work-they leave the house clean-amazing changes visited my eyes: Wow-I said to myself-that got done! And-that got done! In 1 day? Oh-what else? Garbage and furniture removal to environmental code standards-Storage drop-off-Security cameras installed-Driveway signs changed…. So definitely hard work and integrity are part of the S.I.C. brand. But also-I believe what distinguishes S.I.C. from other companies is the combination of the following rare talents and traits: Natural visual-spatial ability to see potential within a mess. Natural visual-motor skills to demolish and reconstruct with precision and perfection. Highly developed organizational skills that keep the project moving forward to conclusion. Highly developed moral character: I always felt comfortable and safe for myself and had 0% worries about my belongings. So as I began-A few days ago my house was listed for sale. The excitement and success is a direct result of S.I.C.’s beautiful miraculous work. This day would not be happening without S.I.C! Collaborating with a company guided by sound intelligence and ethical standards is priceless! For your health and sanity-If you need anything done in your home - house-apartment-trailer-tent-cave-run to your telephone and schedule an appointment! Muito Obrigado Valdemir, Wilson, Ricardo and Flavio!

I requested a quote for repairs to a fence that had been damaged a few months earlier when a tree fell on it. Brian responded almost immediately with a preliminary quote and set up a time to come to the property for a visual inspection. He did a good job keeping me up to date on when the special-order materials were due to arrive and letting me know when my job would be done. He was prompt, helpful in his suggestions, friendly and true to his word. This small job was dismissed by several contractors previously – they would come to inspect the property and waste my time because I would never hear from them again after they left promising they would be back with a quote. Small business owners these days seem to have their pick of jobs because most treat homeowners with small jobs as if we’re bothering them. I have a more significant project I would like done in the next year or so and have now asked Brian for a quote on that. It’s as if most of them don’t realize small jobs done well lead to customer loyalty and a good working relationship the homeowner is happy to continue with for years to come. I would recommend Fratturo Home Remodeling without reservation.

Javier repaired the gate on my vinyl fence which needed a new slat. He did a fantastic job. The area he repaired looks just as good as it did before it became damaged. His communication with me was also better than expected. His price was very fair. I plan on hiring him again and will do so with complete confidence.

Johnny was a pleasure to work with - from fair initial quote (which he held to), to scheduling, to his initial walk-through and then, of course, with the work itself. He cut wood to create shelves, replaced a number of light fixtures and adapted a few fixtures with ingenuity, hung window and bath hardware, an Ikea ceiling-mount channel thing, and - entirely outside of our original scope, diagnosed and rented the tool for removing an awful heavy iron door grill/gate. He was smart, knowledgeable, thoughtful, thrifty, accommodated changes...The real deal. Would/will hire again.

I used Charlie to install my front door. He was very helpful in the door selection process and gave a reasonable quote for the job. His partner and him were on time and were able to do what was needed to get the new door to fit (it was a little smaller). I would recommend him to others.

The first time that I used Jay-Quin contractors was about 15 years ago when they did cement work for me. They did my patio, driveway, steps and sidewalk. None of the cement work has ever cracked which is why I called them for my next job. They did the retiling of my downstairs bathroom. The work was flawless and I never needed to call them back for anything. The next job was in my kitchen. They installed a new kitchen countertop and installed the new appliances. They also painted the kitchen. The next job was to remove the bathtub in the master bathroom and to put in a shower. The work that they did was outstanding. They purchased tiles to match my bathroom tiles and installed a beautiful mosaic in the shower. You would never know there was a bathtub in the bathroom. They also removed paneling from the two smaller bathrooms and smoothed out the walls and painted the rooms. Friends who have seen the rooms cannot tell there was ever paneling in the two bedrooms. I also wanted a light and a ceiling fan in each room. That was also done. The most amazing thing about Jay-Quin is not only the magnificent work that they do, but they never leave dirt around to clean up. They vacuumed every day and cleaned up as much as they could. I would never consider using any other contractor for any work in my home. The workers are extremely nice. They work as fast as they can and their work is precise. This is an amazing company and I would never think of hiring anyone else to work in my home.

Deuel is one of the most “Professional” Contractors I’ve encountered in a very long time. We hired him to restore the Canopy for entrance to our home – he did such an amazing, and exact detailed job; we hired him to complete the finishings of our new custom designed driveway. He produced another master-price painting job; adding exceptional finishings to our custom designed divider/planter wall and finished off with painting Front & Garage Door. I’m very particular about detail, organization, finishings and clean-up… Deuel nails it. We’re so impressed with his “Craftsmanship” we’re planning to use him exclusively for an addition we are adding to our home… he’s an excellent Carpenter/Painter/Handyman/Contractor and only time will expose his limitless expertise…we highly recommend Deuel!

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

      • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
      • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
        • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
      • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

      What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

      Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

      • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
      • Toilet replacement: $75.
      • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
      • Faucet replacement: $125.
      • Garbage disposal: $75.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
