I am so glad that my husband and I decided to work with Chef Ellen for our wedding party. So many things about our experience were great: the food presentation was awesome and she took a lot of care to make sure it matched our aesthetic; Ellen's staff was super pro and worked well in a venue with no kitchen; Ellen was very responsive in her communication and I felt well taken care of. And most importantly, the FOOD was delicious! Would happily recommend Renegade Caterers to anyone.

Chuck and Marie were professional and their food was excellent. They called ahead to indicate they were running about 5 minutes later than their expected arrival (a proper, professional touch). Chuck made sure that special dietary needs of several guests at my wife's birthday party (lactose intolerant, vegetarian) were satisfied while still keeping the food quality excellent-and it was really good! All of our guests commented on how pleased they were with the food. One last comment; Chuck and Marie were so pleasant and nice that we were happy to have them in our home. We highly recommend Every Detail Catering (party was 5/7/16).

I found Bacco Caterers on Thumbtack. I was impressed with the five stars and the reviews, so I contacted Chef Lauren to begin to see if she was the caterer for us—and was she ever! Joyce and I wanted to include our friends and family in our marriage anniversary celebration in our Brooklyn home. We are novice Open House hosts and Lauren advised us re details we would never have thought of, including in our menu selections. Her staff, chef Amanda and sous chef Laura, created freshly made hors d’hoeuvres in our kitchen as the party occurred, superb finger food that was varied, interesting, and delicious! People, including us, loved it. The servers Karen, Tony, and Kevin, and bartender Elroy were unobtrusively attentive and friendly to our guests. Our party took place on two floors and the yard, and the staff kept the food appearing and the empty glasses disappearing with seeming effortlessness. Many guests commented on how comfortable they made everyone feel, contributing to the general sense of joyousness. In spite of our request for no gifts, or perhaps because of it, many of our 50 guests brought flowers. As soon as I was handed the bouquets, Tony would appear and would arrange them in vases I had directed him to when flowers first arrived. I was free during the whole party to visit with my friends and family. I, who am not a party-person, enjoyed myself fully during this celebration, and I am grateful to Chef Lauren and her staff for the many ways (including a fantastic clean-up) they helped make that possible. Tamara Shenkle was fantastic to work with. From start to finish, Tamara professionally brought me through the process of planning our marriage celebration NYC cocktail party. From the delicious menu (the guests raved perfectly bite sized hors d'ourves), cocktails & bar (she handled everything) to the handling of a lovely prosecco toast for fifty of our closest friends. Amoraco's food was fresh, exquisite, the glass and serving ware completely taken care of and the staff gracious, skilled and friendly. Thank you Tamara for catering our party. We and, again, the guests gave you and your team heartfelt compliments. P.S. Thank you for leaving the place so clean - our host appreciated it! I highly recommend Tamara and Amoraco for anyone reading this post.

Chef Wayne did a great job for my end of summer party. Had 30 guests and Global Chefz handled the appetizers and pasta bar for the main meal. He arrived on time, was attentive to my requests, set up and clean up went smoothly. My guests were pleased and one of them took Wayne's info. I would hire him again come my next party.

We worked with Katherine Fonsella from DeCicco events and cuisine and she was WONDERFUL. We were planning a pre-wedding dinner for about 100 people in the Tarrytown area, but we live in Northern California. We did not know any venues or caterers or suppliers. Katherine helped us find a great, unusual loft venue, arranged all the decor, tables, lighting, and set up the catering from DeCiccos. The staff were excellent, the food was very good, everything went off perfectly. We are so appreciative of all that Katherine did to make our event wonderful!

Adolfo and his team catered my mother's 60th Surprise Birthday Party for 15ppl in her apartment. It was an absolute success!!! the food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. the flavor profiles as each course came out complimented the ones before. it was a cohesive menu that we both worked on preparing. the favorites of the night were the mini grilled cheese with the tomato soup shot and the duck wraps. The mini lobster rolls were tasty and we took the leftover lobster and ate them as lettuce wraps. But everything was delish!! I spoke to many caterers and his level of professionalism and follow up was what truly drew me to his as I knew he could be trusted and cared for this event to be a success as much my sisters and i did. Everyone was so pleased and in awe of the service. As soon as an item was sent out - the napkins were whisked away. My sisters and I were able to enjoy my mother's party due to the prompt attention and efficiency of Adolfo's staff. I would love to hire Adolfo again for all my parties. It's well worth it and I'm so fortunate that I was able to find his services. Thank you for his team for making it so special. My mom was blown away- much success to you!! Thumbtack community - please hire them! You will not be disappointed.

I cannot say enough positive things about our experience with Melissa. We had a bachelorette party of 10 girls, and she made it exactly what we wanted! She was extremely flexible with us on the menu as we all had different tastes. The room was beautiful, the food was delicious, and everyone wants to hire her again the next time we get together! Looking forward to our next experience with Melissa!

My husband and I hosted an intimate birthday dinner party for our daughter, her boyfriend and guest visiting from Belgium and a couple of close friends. Each of them enjoyed the salmon and lamb chops, the presentation of the appetizers and salad was great. We had a great experience with Chef Aless. This is the first time that I've personally worked with a caterer for a small event (15 people) and it couldn't have gone better. Chef Stenneth was very detailed when presenting me with catering options. He worked within my budget and was open to any suggestions and alterations I had. He was communicative and responsive to all my inquiries and delivered everything punctually. A true professional! The food itself was AMAZING! The guests at my event all specifically pointed out how much they enjoyed the food! Chef Stenneth's culinary skills easily rival top restaurants in the city and I feel like I've found a hidden gem with him. I would easily recommend him to anyone looking for a caterer for any party size!

Prior to working with Melissa, she was very responsive. She was comfortable responding over text, email and phone. She gave me ample time on the phone so that I could get to know her before coming to our house. Additionally, Melissa was patient as I tried to figure out the menu for the actual event. On the night of the event, Melissa came over to the house. We were staying at a rented home that had limited supplies. Melissa was not at all thrown off by this, and she had brought all of the materials she would need to cook with. While Melissa was happy to cook in the kitchen alone with her assistant, she was extremely social with the other members of the party (there were seven of us); and was happy to share what she was cooking, how she was doing it, and answering any questions people had. A mixed gender bachelorette party, Melissa was really able to understand the energy of the space, and was even willing to take pictures of our group before she left! The food she made was absolutely delicious and she was able to find a good balance between feeding everyone without having too much food left over. I would definitely hire again for another event!

Carol Foster catered my wedding in New York in August 2, 2014.. OMG I do not know where to start, Ms.Carol and her team went above and beyond to make sure this event was successful. She catered 500 people but on that day there were more than 500 people. Mind you that I am African so we throw large party even when you do not plan for it to be that large so my max was 500 not knowing what will happen that day...However, Ms. Carol did not panic and worked successful with my coordinator. From the beginning she worked with our budget and was able to help us with some of her recommendation of the dishes. She and her team were there on time. From the reviews of family members, friends and the guests of the event stated that her food was really good and tasty. They were very professional. Ms. Carol is the best and I will use her again in a heart beat. She made my wedding dreams come through. Oh she also has a great personality and a warm nature person and will work with you no matter your budget. What attracted my coordinator and I was her personality and after the food tasting which was done by my fiancé at that time and two of my siblings since I was located in Texas. So I was praying to hear good news from the tasters and they told me her food was really good among the other caterers and her house was very organized and neat. Ms. Carol keep on with the great job you do and God bless you and your team. YOU ARE THE BEST.

Five stars doesn't do them justice! Our experience with Ms. Reid-Worthington and everyone at 'Now That Was A Great Party' was outstanding. Ms. Reid-Worthington was a consummate professional from the very first email to the very last moments of our event. Their food was absolutely devoured and received rave reviews from our guests! Ms. Reid-Worthington made such an effort to create a menu that reflected our vision for the day- even taking on special requests. She was open, patient, kind and offered great and helpful suggestions. While this time around we only hired 'Now That Was A Great Party' for catering- I know that they do full event planning, and based on my experiences, I would be extremely confident having them plan my event from start to finish. We had a great feeling right from the start about 'Now That Was A Great Party', and about business owner, Ms. Reid-Worthington, and our instincts were spot on. We're looking forward to working with 'Now That Was A Great Party' for many years to come!

JP catered a party for us of about 40 adults and 20 kids and we had a great experience working with him - highly recommend his services! He was responsive and flexible during the planning phase, able to modify his gameplan day-of when our rooftop venue got rained out :( and prepped and served the food efficiently, beautifully and notably, without needing anything from us as hosts, letting us truly enjoy the party. On top of all that, all the guests loved the food itself and several have inquired about contacting JP for their own events. I’m happy to make those connections because JP is truly a great chef and a consummate professional!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
