We love working with Jay. We bought the 5 session package and have enjoyed every single minute of working with Jay. He is very passionate about what he does and really likes to get to know not only your animal but you as well. He really made the training of our dog Tommy a family affair and included our young children as well. He was never rushed for time, always showed up on time with a smile and lots of tips and information. We love his gentle way of training. Because of Jay we now have a very well behaved and trained dog we can enjoy for a long time to come. And we know we can always count on Jay in case anything comes up. We highly recommend him.

Wonderful experience with Suzanne who has worked beautifully with our 10 month old dog and was able to give us lots of practical advice to train the dog. Suzannne was also very good with the children, helping them understand their role in the dog's training.

Words can't describe how much Ariana means to us. After rescuing a 72lb AmStaff with behavioral issues, we asked Ariana to help guide us through training our sweet, strong boy. Ariana's tireless patience, humor and knowledge made training our dog a fun, bonding experience instead of a stressful one. Her commitment to ensuring our collective success and a healthy, happy dog was evident in every hour she spent with us. Work with Ariana- she is a joy who also knows her dog training stuff!

Joan is a kind and loving person, and brings these qualities to her superb dog training. She helped Sidney Cha-Cha, our miniature poodle pup, with anxiety and incessant barking. We are grateful for her assistance, and our dogs will miss her presence in our home. Highly recommended!

I came to Sean, with my beautiful, sweet, goofy yet incredibly scary 5-year old pit mix that I had recently rescued. He had never been trained before or truly cared for and came to me with a rap sheet and the behavior to prove it. He is a big dog. He did not trust anyone or anything, was a nervous wreck and had human aggression that put me so on edge we couldn't really function as a unit, nor could I trust anyone else around him. He needed help or else he wouldn't last with me or with anyone else and I knew this was his last chance. I was overwhelmed with uncertainty and fear and exasperated by the trainers and advice that I was coming across. Needless to say, by the time we got to Sean, I didn't have much faith left at that point. I was so hesitant to send my dog to a board and train and I just did not know what to expect at all. And let's be honest - the price is scary for little people like me who really don't have that kind of money to throw around. I bought my English Bulldog from a breeder for that price and trained him at Petsmart, lol! It did not work but he's been mostly easy his whole life. I was so uneducated on proper dog training. I was scared, lost, we needed help and I was determined not to give up on this dog. I put everything I had into trusting Sean with him and I can absolutely say that it paid off for the both of us. He came back a different dog with confidence, attentiveness and a calmness that I never could have achieved on my own. He is a work in progress and always will be, but the foundation that Sean established for us is exactly what I was hoping for. It's only been a few days since he came home but I already feel such a difference in his behavior and our relationship. Sean was able to develop a trust that did not exist before. He trusts me now and respects me and has become so chill, it's just amazing. Sean is a very knowledgeable and realistic trainer that will instill the skills and confidence in you and your dog in a very straight forward and easygoing way. He's unlike any other trainer I've ever worked with before and is the only one whose methods and advice I know will stick with me forever. He teaches in a way that is easy to understand and what he practices just makes sense in the real world. He sends informative and useful reading material and posts videos online throughout the training to keep you engaged and educated. It is extremely helpful and good for visual learners like myself. I am so glad that I took the leap and if you're reading this and my story sounds familiar, then you should too. We couldn't thank you more Sean.

I began working with Rick about a month ago to assist with my 18-month old pitbull, Petunia. Petunia had become aggressive to strangers (e.g., lunging, barking aggressively) when out in public and in the home and I was very much beside myself with how to address the behaviors. We had attempted obedience training at the pet store which did not correct the problem and she continued to worsen. People were afraid of my little pitty and I was developing a sense of hopelessness and resignation where I no longer even wanted to take her for walks and just figured we would have to live a limited lifestyle with her. As a last ditch effort to address Petunia's aggression, I had a consultation with Rick. He took an hour to meet with us to evaluate her. Petunia aggressively barked and lunged the whole time at Rick, but he thought she could be helped and we signed on for the ride. What a journey it has been. In less than a month, I have a restored sense of hope that Petunia can reach her full potential as a wonderful pet. With several training sessions and several trips to stay with Rick, Petunia is now heeling, is much more under control, is not barking aggressively or lunging on walks, and appears more calm and mellow overall. Rick has also taken much time to continuously meet and/or consult with me and my boyfriend on how to maintain the progress by teaching us how to handle Petunia on our own. We are still in the midst of Petunia's training, but I can see a complete 180 in her and am forever grateful that we made the decision to work with Rick. I highly recommend him without hesitation.

Bruce has been very patient and informative. He has helped me decide whether a service dog was right for me by providing the crucial information that I couldn't find online. The guidance has been extremely reassuring. I look forward to the process of finding and training a dog with Bruce.

We have not completed our puppy training yet but so far all is going well. Josh connected with my puppy right away as if she knew him already and responded to his reward-based training technique right away. He also gave us a lot of information on how to care for our puppy.

Gus has just started walking my dog this week during the day while I'm at work. My dog is shy and within a couple of sessions, he warmed up to Gus and now he wags his tail when he hears him at the door. I am very pleased with Gus' service.

I cannot recommend Adam from Casper Dog Training enough! He took his time to tailor his training to our needs with our dog, making sure we understood what he was doing the entire time. His patience, understanding, and professionalism made him amazing to work with without feeling overwhelmed or pressured. We will definitely continue dog training with Adam, he was a very calming presence and made sure to answer all of our questions and concerns before he finished. He was very thorough and left us with great tips to make sure we knew exactly how to continue to work with our dog.

I met Charli when I was training my pug, Rosie, to become a therapy dog. Rosie is a bit older so I was unsure if this would be possible. Charli is patient and kind with all of the dog owners and just as patient and kind with the dogs with a wonderful confidence that she uses in her training techniques. If you use Charli for dog training you can be sure you are in good hands. She doesn't stop until both dog and owner are completely trained. Her knowledge and experience can't be matched. I definitely recommend The Dog Chick!!!

Andrea and her husband John go above and beyond to take care of our dog, a shy rescue who needed help to open up. Great value for our money. Our pup is tired out from having so much fun with her doggy friends during her walks and greets us calmly when we get home. She's also now better about welcoming strangers to pet her. Highly recommend!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

She is an 11wk old South African Boerboel. We got her from a breeder in Buffalo, NY. She was never outside the breeders home (as far as walks and play) until we got her. She doesn't like going outside because of the wind and cold. She is very lovable and likes to cuddle up with us. But when she gets excited and plays she does try to bite.
