Sal is a warm hearted, gentle soul with a soothing voice & calming demeanor. He has a high level of expertise in training dogs. My wife & I are incredibly happy with his handling & training of our miniature poodle "Lucky". Sal was able to control our very rambunctious dog & calmed him very easily. Sal has a very natural ability to handle dogs. We are more than pleased with both him & his ability to train "Lucky". We highly recommend Sal & can truly say that you get way more than your money's worth with hiring him. He is a true professional & it's quite obvious that he enjoys his craft. You will be very happy with his level of expertise, training methods & overall effectiveness. Thank you Sal for being our "dog whisperer".

We took 5 lessons with Jay for our 4 month old female labradoodle. Since my dog will be about 50 – 60lbs when she is an adult and we have a child at home, a well-behaved dog is very important to us. We searched up online to look for a good reputation dog trainer and came up Jay. My husband spent almost an hour to talk with Jay over the phone. He was very impressed on his knowledge of the dog training techniques so we made an appointment for the 1st lesson in our house. During the 1st lesson, he tried to understand the personality of the dog and identify the issues that the dog has. He is an experienced dog trainer and they built up a bonding really quickly. Over the next 4 lessons, he taught my dog the commands of sit, down, stay, paw, take it/leave it, and drop it in tug war. What we need to do is to reinforcement these commands every day. He also taught us some basic knowledge of how to take care of the dog, how to walk the dog properly and how to train the dog to fit in our schedule. He told us lots of tips how to build up the bonding with the dog so that we can handle the dog easier in our daily life. This is a MUST if you have a dog.

Wonderful experience with Suzanne who has worked beautifully with our 10 month old dog and was able to give us lots of practical advice to train the dog. Suzannne was also very good with the children, helping them understand their role in the dog's training.

Ariana is a true professional and expert when it comes to dog training. I have two small dogs that needed training for pulling and aggression on walks and Ariana provided specific, hands-on, training and tips while we went on our evening walk. Ariana is invested in my dogs improving their behavior and I am forever grateful!

Joan is a kind and loving person, and brings these qualities to her superb dog training. She helped Sidney Cha-Cha, our miniature poodle pup, with anxiety and incessant barking. We are grateful for her assistance, and our dogs will miss her presence in our home. Highly recommended!

This past summer Ken worked with Rosie, a 10 month Cavapoo, and myself. He took the time to get to know us in order to adapt the dog training sessions to fit our personalities, comfort level, and goals. Rosie responded quickly to his positive training approach. Ken was also extremely patient in showing me how to continue working with Rosie at home in order to reinforce what was learned in the sessions. Rosie quickly learned all the commands necessary to receive her Good Citizenship certificate. Rosie is now a well-behaved dog who accompanies my family everywhere. Whether attending lacrosse tournaments, school parades, or going to work with my husband, we always receive comments on her behavior and training. I would highly recommend Ken and Etlon Training Academy to anyone.

Anna is such a great trainer, mentor & friend. She is patient and always excited to share her endless knowledge in dog training. Not only did our husky, Kodiak, learn a great deal, but she focused a lot of her training on us. Though our training sessions are over, Anna is always so kind and available when we need to tweak some of Kodiak's mishaps. I would highly recommend BesoMomma anytime!!

I began working with Rick about a month ago to assist with my 18-month old pitbull, Petunia. Petunia had become aggressive to strangers (e.g., lunging, barking aggressively) when out in public and in the home and I was very much beside myself with how to address the behaviors. We had attempted obedience training at the pet store which did not correct the problem and she continued to worsen. People were afraid of my little pitty and I was developing a sense of hopelessness and resignation where I no longer even wanted to take her for walks and just figured we would have to live a limited lifestyle with her. As a last ditch effort to address Petunia's aggression, I had a consultation with Rick. He took an hour to meet with us to evaluate her. Petunia aggressively barked and lunged the whole time at Rick, but he thought she could be helped and we signed on for the ride. What a journey it has been. In less than a month, I have a restored sense of hope that Petunia can reach her full potential as a wonderful pet. With several training sessions and several trips to stay with Rick, Petunia is now heeling, is much more under control, is not barking aggressively or lunging on walks, and appears more calm and mellow overall. Rick has also taken much time to continuously meet and/or consult with me and my boyfriend on how to maintain the progress by teaching us how to handle Petunia on our own. We are still in the midst of Petunia's training, but I can see a complete 180 in her and am forever grateful that we made the decision to work with Rick. I highly recommend him without hesitation.

Alice is the real deal! During our first meeting, we discussed all the members of the household (pets & humans), from diets, behavior, issues, schedules, to activities, grooming, and much more. We were able to resolve basic commands and for the first time, we were able to master the walk with both pets, all during the first visit. Needless to say, I booked more sessions. I can't wait to see the improvements we will make as a pack over the next few weeks! Thank you, Alice & RufF lOve dOg traiNIng :) From Dylan, Omie and their newly trained (very happy) humans. xoxo

I have only used Sarah once so far but will not hesitate to again. I moved into a new City and immediately needed to be out of town and have someone lined up to take care of my dog. It could not have been more chaotic with the move, a Holiday, and the last minute request and Sarah was incredibly accommodating for the whole experience. When I arrived home my dog was happy and clearly well taken care of. I will absolutely be calling her again in the future.

We have not completed our puppy training yet but so far all is going well. Josh connected with my puppy right away as if she knew him already and responded to his reward-based training technique right away. He also gave us a lot of information on how to care for our puppy.

Kristen is amazing. We were looking for a trainer who could help us with both training and therapy with a 3 year old samoyed who had suffered a carpal (wrist) injury. Kristen's experience as a breeder and trainer of working dogs combined with her experience as a vet tech made her the perfect choice and we're lucky we found her. Kristen primarily works with Australian Shepherds, breeding training and showing, but she is great with all breeds. Do you know she has shown dogs at Westminster? Our Samoyed Lulu had an accident a year ago and her carpal joint had become inflamed. Lulu's stomach doesn't tolerate NSAIDS, and Lulu was in pain and picking up some bad habits. Kristen took over and got everything on the right track right away. First, Kristen helped us find a course of treatment that helped relieve Lulu's worst symptoms without harming her stomach, stabilizing her for the next step. Then Kristen designed a course of training to simultaneously strengthen Lulu's muscles and joints. (Not just her wrist) to better support her weight, while also training Lulu for obedience. Kristen even managed conversations with a local vet to get the right combination of meds for Lulu including gabapenton. Kristen went far beyond what we expected. I can't think of a better resource for training, working with physical challenges , coordinating treatment and doing it all seamlessly. For any job, from basic puppy training to working dog training to complex cases like ours, you won't find anyone even close to Kristen. Thanks Kristen!

We are so happy to have met Debbie! She is an absolute pleasure. She helped me and my fiancee learn how to be the best owners to our new puppy Bodie. She truly cares for each animal she works with and wants the best for both owner and dog. Being a pretty anxious person, Debbie was so patient and helpful. She never left without us fully understanding what is expected and always made sure we could do it on our own. She is a fabulous trainer and person. She even gave us great tips for healthy homemade treats for our dog. I would recommend her 1000 times over to anyone who is looking for help with their dog, new or old.

I cannot recommend Adam from Casper Dog Training enough! He took his time to tailor his training to our needs with our dog, making sure we understood what he was doing the entire time. His patience, understanding, and professionalism made him amazing to work with without feeling overwhelmed or pressured. We will definitely continue dog training with Adam, he was a very calming presence and made sure to answer all of our questions and concerns before he finished. He was very thorough and left us with great tips to make sure we knew exactly how to continue to work with our dog.

Michelle was so professional and friendly. She explained how each day would be structured for my dog and sent me videos of him following commands. There is a considerable improvement after one week. Our shiba Inu is quite stubborn but Michelle has got rid of some of his bad behaviors. I have already booked my dog in for a two week stay next year when I am away overseas. I would highly recommend Michelle!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
