Introduction: I’d love to have you as a singing student. Some of my students have won national or TV singing contests, some perform in NYC or on tour, some have released CDs with their own bands, and some of their original songs get radio airplay - and some sing for their own pleasure. Instead of taking music lessons at a national music franchise, you can study singing at the BJ Simon Singing Studio and work with the same teacher every week. A teacher who personally gets to know you, your voice, your progress, and your favorite kinds of music. My singers range from beginner to advanced, and in age from 10 years old (or when the voice starts to change) to mature adults into their 70s. I love to see singers develop their own style. And hear them move into new areas of voice, performing, music, personal development - and new levels of professionalism that they never dreamed they could achieve. If you want to contact me for lessons and are under 18, please have an adult sign up for you or the request won't go through. Singers work on a wide variety of musical genres including Rock, Pop, R&B, Musical Theater, Sinatra Tribute, Americana, a Cappella, singer/songwriter. The lessons include a vocal warm up, work on vocal technique, and studying song performance. My special discount (for Thumbtack students only!) is $40 for an initial 30 minute lesson so we can meet on Zoom for an interview, you can ask any questions you have, and sing something for me to a backing track or video if you would like to. Then you can choose between $60 for 45 minutes, and $75 for an hour. I teach Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri, and Sat. You can also see my book "Singing - Body and Soul". The book is endorsed by Stephen Flaherty, the two-time Tony-winning composer of "Ragtime" and "Once on This Island." Deke Sharon ("Pitch Perfect" movies) has also given the book a 4-star review on Goodreads. My studio is in Passaic in a friendly neighborhood with easy parking.

Taking singing lessons was really going over an edge for me. It was something "other" people did. I had put it off for decades because I didn't want to appear silly. It was just wishful thinking; part of my secret self. I couldn't have been in better hands with Barbara. She met me exactly where I was at and made me feel comfortable. I had wished to sing one song well. Working with Barbara turns out to be more than that. It's more about expression, finding my voice, playfulness and feeling the song. It's really a growth experience.

I have been taking lessons from Barbara for several months now. I am a musician but I've never really tried to sing before and I really had no idea what to expect. I am a pretty shy and awkward person and she has made me make a lot of weird noises that would probably make me cry a bit if it were in front anyone else. It's been great fun. After each lesson I feel a bit more confident and energized. If you're looking to improve your voice, you've found the right person. It has been an incredibly fun and rewarding experience and I look forward to each lesson.

Barbara has been great - she melds classic training methods with a more "holistic" style of approaching voice and singing. As a working singer looking to hone my skills before a big recording session, Barbara has been great at refining my less then favorable habits while highlighting the positive attributes of my voice. The goal in any lesson set is to understand more about your instrument while learning to appreciate the craft and ability to express yourself or a song musically. I walk out of each lesson very happy and more confident in my abilities then the week prior. I will be with Barbara at a minimum for 4 months and would absolutely recommend her to others, both new and experienced singers.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
The first lesson is 30 minutes for $40 so we can meet on Zoom, you can ask any questions you have, and sing something for me to a backing track or video if you would like to. After that, most students take an hour long lesson each week for $75 an hour. If you would like to take a 45 minute lesson, that price is $60 a lesson. A few students like to take a lesson every other week, which is fine. We are working with the muscles around your vocal cords, and they need to be strengthened the same way you would work with muscles at the gym. So if you don't take the lessons at least every other week, we won't be able to make much progress.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Working to build and strengthen your voice. Introducing you to songs that are right for you. Helping you bring your own personal life stories into your singing performances. Working with you on audition songs for shows and college admissions. Teaching your how to take care of your voice when you are sick or hoarse.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Initially, I attended NYU Tisch School of the Arts in their Musical Theater program, and continued studying at NYU Gallatin independent study program where I graduated with honors. In the past 20 years, I have continued to study singing with the best teachers I can find. Not only do I work on my own voice with them, but I apprentice to them by bringing in recordings of my students and asking them about the next level I should work on with my teaching. The most recent voice teacher I have studied / apprenticed to is Debra Byrd - who was the head voice coach on American Idol for the first ten years of the show, and is currently a Voice Teacher on NBC-TV's "The Voice," the Chair of the Vocal Program at Musicians Institute in LA, CA, and Artist-in-Residence at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.
