I enlisted the help of Arbor Tutors to help me with test prep for grad school. Oh man! I am SUPER happy I did that. The tutoring manager walked me through the whole process and set me up with TWO tutors. They also said I could change tutors at any time, but I didn't need to. I was accepted into all of my top choices (Columbia, Penn, Cornell and Duke). I used the application services also (they reviewed my essays).
Jeremy is an excellent teacher and can help you improve in any subject! He is fantastic with test prep such as the Algebra Regents where I scored over a 90 and with final exams. He also helped me with all of my study skills which has made a big difference with my time management. He simplifies everything, makes our lessons fun, and creates a plan for each week. I highly recommend using Jeremy to help you with all areas of your academic and test prep work!
Very responsive to messages. Extremely professional and very enthusiastic. Above and beyond quality of work. Always prepared with the best test prep materials. Would highly recommend.
Sasha helped me go from the 43rd percentile to the 55th on the GRE quant section. She gave me the tools to be able to solve all the problems on the test. After tutoring with Sasha I was able to feel more confident and relaxed when taking the test, she’s the best!
I have only the highest praise for Jim DelGenio, in every possible way. We have had a longtime tutor working with my son, but test prep is not her specialty. We were referred to Jim through an acquaintance, and Im so grateful that we had him in our corner. Simply put, Jim is a fabulous tutor. He very quickly assessed Conors working and learning style, and adapted his sessions accordingly. He spent quite some time chatting with us at the beginning of our time together, to understand our goals and work toward them. Our experience with Jim felt the total opposite of a package, but rather a customized strategy based on Conors strengths/weaknesses and our goals. Jim has a broad range of knowledge of not only the testing process, but also navigating the waters of college applications. He was a wealth of information that informed much of how we proceeded with the various schools Conor was considering. Jim gave homework that was apropos to the subject matter they were covering, but was mindful about weeks where Conors schoolwork was overwhelming we all appreciated that! And personally, Jim was a pleasure to work with. Always on time. Always responsive to e-mails and phone calls. And an all around nice guy too! But the best testimony I could give is from Conor himself. I asked him if he attributed his great success in his SAT scores to his work with Jim. His reply? Absolutely.
Aron is very knowledgeable about ACT/SAT math prep. He explained everything very well, and was also very easy to work with in setting up the appointment.
Ray is a great tutor and a great person. He was extremely patient with my 9 year old son when we asked him to help with some last minute ISEE prep. My son actually looked forward to his sessions. Ray helped keep him on track when he started to wander. Ray is responsive, punctual, & cares about his students. I would hire him again in a minute.
Ethan was a key factor in helping me achieve a 35 on the ACT. His guidance is impeccable, acting in the best interest of the student; when I struggled to improve my SAT score, he made the decisive choice to change our preparation path to toward the ACT. The change was essential to achieving the high score that I wanted. Although I was never a humanities-oriented person, he also helped to improve my human skills which in turn boosted my scores. My reading and English scores skyrocketed after he helped me these more abstract sections with logic and reasoning. I recommend Ethan to anyone who is looking to improve their scores; his knowledge and poise are unmatched.
Nick made each lesson engaging and fun. I found myself looking forward to the next lesson. He is extremely knowledgeable and always found a way to make the lesson relatable. He provided me with many useful test taking tips and tricks. As a result of Nick's coaching, I experienced a significant increase in my test scores.
Lenore has been helping me hone my math skills in order to pass a placement exam. I feel lucky to have found her on Thumbtack. She is knowledgeable and patient. She clearly cares about my success and goes out of her way to accommodate my needs as well as my schedule. I intend to continue working with her in order to pass both the Elementary and College Algebra portions of the test so that I can complete my associates degree and move onto the University for my four year degree. I can honestly and emphatically recommend Lenore as a teacher, tutor and advocate! Sent from my iPhone
SW 410 (stats) is the hardest class. I have a learning disabiity that makes a class like this really hard to understand. R & L Consultants made this process easier. He explained things until I understood. I had a big project that needed you to explain a hyposesis and then you run a test. So hard to do, but can I say R&L consultants made this project almost enjoyable. He is truely invested and cares about you and your success. I would hire this pro again in a heart beat!
Had an emergency math issue and was going to hire him for a few days to help me pass my Clep test. Doesn’t text to confirm, even though he saw my text. Doesn’t respond to phone calls or text messages, until 20 mins after he was supposed to show up to our appointment. He texts saying that he had an issue adding the appointment to the calendar. But he knew about the appointment because he saw my confirmation message earlier today. Now I’m standing in the rain scrambling to find another tutor to help with my Clep that’s coming up in a few days because i can’t trust this won’t happen again from him.
My experience was great justin really helped me prepare for the test. He pushed me more than I would've by myself especially in areas were I struggled. There was never anything he couldn't explain or answer so that I understood better. During test day I felt totally ready and knew what I was doing.
Stacy was AMAZING when she worked with my daughter, Clementine, when we were worried about her reading ( and writing ). We came to Stacy when my daughter was in 2nd grade, and I am so HAPPY with the results!!!!!!! Clementine LOVES to read. She became a kid who could not put down a book! And she became an incredible test taker, with top scores, I don't mean to brag, it is just here is a kid who we were WORRIED about... I must say, Stacy gives a lot of homework, that focuses in on the mechanics of reading, and we had our daughter do it. And, I think that really helped. Clementine progressed so quickly, with Stacy. I am VERY Pro---the Orton Gillingham technique. Long ago, when I was a kid, in the 70's, I did not know how to read, and unfortunately I fell through the cracks with methods that did not work for me. But, finally in 4th grade, I got an Orton Gillingham tutor, and I did miraculously, with this technique . I was a struggling kid, academically, who then went on to do really well in high school, and went to a really great college (Oberlin), and then Graduate School (NYU). I don't mean to brag, but my point is, I believe in this technique, and Stacy is FANTASTIC !!! She is the best....worth every penny, but have your kid do the homework.
Heather is very personable and puts kids at ease quickly. She knows the tests, the strategies for both reading and math and she is a great PSAT/SAT prep tutor.
Horace has good intuition on how to motivate a student, which is a rare asset in the test prep world.
Before I first started working with John, everything I knew about the LSAT had come from taking one practice test several months earlier. I had done absolutely no preparation for this practice test, and I think I had scored somewhere around the mid-150s. John quickly familiarized me with basics of the test, and soon I was scoring in the low to mid 160s-range. My best section quickly became the Logic Games, thanks to John’s efficient teaching of it. However, what stumped me over and over again was dealing with uncertainty in the Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension sections, with picking the best answer out of an entire set of mediocre answers and with questions that didn’t seem to fit into neat patterns that the majority of LSAT questions and answers fell into. Luckily, I had found a fantastic tutor to help me. John was always extremely patient and meticulous. He made sure to give me thorough explanations for questions that I had difficulty fully comprehending to make sure I had a complete understanding of why the right answer was correct. He did not give up even when I would say, “Uh…ok” to his initial explanation when he heard the hesitation in my voice. John gave me weekly assignments specifically tailored to my progress. He worked very hard to mold my brain to be the best LSAT-conquering brain that it could be. He even requested that I email him my Word document of LSAT notes every time I updated it. At the same time, he was not at all a grim and harsh tutor, and freely gave me encouragement whenever I expressed my fears that I was just not smart enough to score as high as I wanted to on the LSAT. John was always flexible and understanding about my schedule–I first studied for the LSATs while juggling a summer internship and conducting interviews for a senior thesis, then again during my winter break and then during the first few weeks of my senior spring semester. John never demanded that I work around his schedule. He even travelled to China during the summer, but made sure to make time for our lessons that took place effectively over video chat. Alas, I improved but did not score as well as I wanted to the first time I took the LSAT. The second time around, along with my usual weekly assignments and lessons, John instructed me to start making flashcards of all my wrong answers from practice exams and to use the Leitner flash card review technique to study my cards. (This technique involves: (i) separating flash cards into 4 boxes, with each card getting promoted to the next box when the correct answer is given or moving the card back to Box 1 when an incorrect answer is given, and (ii) using a schedule of which boxes should be studied on which day of the week.) During lessons, John and I would fill out new flash cards. John made sure that I not only wrote down why the right answer was right and my wrong answer was wrong, but also precisely what to look out for with these questions and answers, so that I would not miss these traits or clues the next time I encountered them in other questions. I am almost certain this technique was one of the main reasons I scored a 171 the second time I took the LSAT. Before I used the Leitner system, I did not review my old answers nearly as much as I should have, certainly not every day. With the Leitner system, I was forced to constantly keep reviewing concepts that I had missed previously so that I would not do so again, which helped me stay on top of my personal challenges. Toward the last couple of weeks before the second time that I would take the LSAT, I consistently scored 170 or more on practice exams. It was also helpful that John and I got along very well on a personal level. He was considerate and polite but also witty and funny–I was very lucky that our senses of humor meshed so well. It was a huge bonus that even our tastes in sci-fi and fantasy were highly compatible as well. I owe my 171 score to John. He is a patient, precise, professional, perceptive, and entertaining tutor who knows the LSAT inside and out and wants to make sure that all his students do as well. Anyone hoping to defeat the LSATs would be lucky to have him as their tutor.
In the course of 4 hours, Samantha transformed my ACT preparation rut into victory! I was unable to progress in my performance on the ACT science section, and yet I could not identify what was wrong with my method of attack. Samantha listened intently and graciously to my thought processes as I verbally solved a few practice problems. She pin-pointed where my strategy could change, and asked me insightful questions that guided my mind to a more orderly strategy for each different question type. My science score jumped 5 points, remained consistent on each practice test, and my final overall ACT score exceeded my goal! Because Samantha, with her confidently kind and encouraging demeanor, effectively and efficiently honed my skills, I received the scholarship that enabled me to afford college! Thank you Samantha!
Hallie just began tutoring my 22 year old son in college-level chemistry. They established a good connection and he feels she can help him to get through the year successfully.
Samantha was extremely helpful in helping me study and work for my English final. Her help was crucial in helping me get ready for the test.
I think any adult who pays to study a test just goes to show how important the test is to the person who may be feeling uncertain about him/herself or perhaps some aspects of the test. Hence, I believe the greatest value of a tutor is his ability to motivate his students to the next level of learning and to feel confident in tackling the test. And that is exactly what I found in Fred. I was feeling apprehensive after attempting some questions on the mock GRE test. But now, with the support of Fred, I feel very confident and that confidence motivated me to want to do my very best. So from the bottom of my heart.. Thank you Fred for sharing my journey to a self actualisation need.
