These guys were amazing! Setting up the appointment was easy, the technician was extremely punctual and very knowledgable. I live in a 50 year old building so who knows what's behind the wall (I have the holes to prove it) - but he knew immediately and was able to get everything mounted exactly how I had pictured it. Will definitely be relying on these guys in the future!

My experience with Skilled Service Repair & Installation was GREAT!! Joe showed up on time was very knowledgeable about how to perform the tasks needed. He was very efficient in executing the required jobs in a timely and orderly fashion. My apartment walls are old and although it was a challenge hanging my 6ft 3 in mirror he made sure the mirror was secure and the area was safe for my children to play without worry. There was little to no mess when he was done and I felt extremely comfortable with the job he did. I would absolutely recommend his service to anyone in need of a service and repairman.

Juan worked in my apartment fixing the ceiling, installing a new lighting fixture, re-locating the stove, building a countertop and changing the locks on the door. Everything I needed done, he was able to do... in one day! For a very reasonable price! Juan is honest, skillful and a very hard worker. He is now the handyman for the building. Definitely call Juan for your job

Ted is a very experienced contractor who knows what he is doing. He clearly gave me a lot of inputs throughout the course of project. I hired him to remove the wall between the dinning and kitchen and then looking at his work I gave him many other add-on projects such as building a kitchen island, cabinets, building a wet bar, backsplash tiles etc., He is a punctual guy who shows up to work on time. Not to mention he is a very friendly. He fixed many other small things outside of the project and was kind enough to not include in invoice. I am not going to look for contractors for any kind of home remodeling projects. I was away for family vacation and he helped in coordinating with counter top guys to get the work done. Payments: He took payments as and when the job is done. He send pictures of the job as and when it is done to make sure the end result is as planned. That helped me a lot to see things as it happens when I was still busy at my work. Stop your search and hire him to get the work done!

Glenn removed some plywood from a floor in my house and hauled away another demo'd floor. He took the time to help pull some tricky plywood from my stairs at no charge. He took care not to damage any walls or floors. His pricing was fair, he was on time, and he was easy to communicate with.

DaNa Clean Ups and More did an outstanding job cleaning out our garage. We were very concerned about the clean up because we were struggling to get rid of mice in our garage for quite some time and we didn't know how many items were destroyed by the mice and their droppings. This was a huge undertaking, but Francisco and his staff not only removed everything from the garage while constantly disinfecting everything as they went along, but they were also extremely courteous, kind and respectful. The job was done in 5 hours and the garage looked brand new when they were done. I absolutely will recommend them to everyone I know.

The repairman arrived on-time for his appointment and spent an additional day at my home to ensure the faucet replacement was done correctly and to ensure there was no additional leakage (not a drop!) of unused water wasted. As this repairman's work was such good quality and with good care, as well as fairly priced, I contracted his services for some additional odd jobs around my home, which included touch-up painting, automatic garage door repair, kitchen cabinet repairs and installation of lighting fixtures (minor electrical work).

Leonardo is THE BEST! came on time, very professional, extremely experienced and has a calm and friendly demeanor. He put together a bookcase, a bench and hung some pictures for me and he was really pleasant to hang out with. Honest and diligent and calm...all traits that make having someone in your apartment with a toddler much easier! I would hire him again in a second and his pricing was extremely fair.

Don and his partner were extremely efficient and helpful in mounting my TV. They were clearly very experienced, and even came back later in the day when I couldn't make the first appointment time. The TV looks perfect on the wall, and it was all done for a very reasonable price. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for small jobs around their home or apartment.

We contracted with High Rise to undertake a kitchen and bathroom renovation project and we were very happy with the outcome of the project as Kiran was open to working within the parameters that we had set for the project. Unlike many other people who gave us quotes Kiran actually provided us a few alternatives which would help us keep the costs down while still getting a quality product. I think a contracting firm who can work with different types of clients and can provide a few different solutions is good to have on your side rather than someone who provides a single quote and is not very flexible. Personally Kiran's behavior is also something that we generally found appealing.

David built the home I currently live in 14 years ago. Actually it was a total remodel of a house built in 1935, certainly more difficult than building new. It was reconstructed with the personal pride of Dave and his crew who were on site everyday. There was constant communication toward the materials and methods selected that affected the esthetics and livability and yes the cost of building my home. Dave and his crew were diligent during their time on site offering suggestions that made the build more enjoyable toward the future. Frequently family, friends and visitors comment on the design and individual touches that make this home. To this day Dave will call just to make sure all is well. What more could you want from a builder?

I had a rather large scale project to build steps and a path around the side of the house. Victor and Fransisco did a amazing job. The value was great and they really took their time with cleaning and ensuring they communicated clearly with me at each stage of the project. They know what they are doing. I will be using them again soon for other projects. Strongly recommend them!

My experience working with the Score Construction has been excellent. They are true professionals who bring important construction knowledge and outstanding management skills to renovation of our house in Brooklyn NY. There has been a lot of difficulties during the renovation such as molded shearing building elements, damaged carrying beams or previous renovation mistakes. In every part of the project, the entire team of Score const. lead by Jay, provided excellent service. Especially at the beginning of construction, Jay’s helps for our purchases such as kitchen cabinets, interior/exterior doors, tiles, stones, toilets educated and saved us lots of money and time. Besides, we find the best quality products with his great ideas. Not only their ability of perfect finishes, but also critical suggestions for future usage and durability/longevity of house as various issues came up enabled us to make informed decisions throughout the process. Anyone would be well served in choosing the Score Construction as general contractor for their upcoming project. Thanks!

I hired Zack for my kitchen remodel. He did an amazing job. He is very understanding and was always open to ideas. He is extremely experienced in remodeling homes and is very familiar with the building codes since he is also a home inspector. He was referred to me by my neighbor who also had his kitchen done. The format of his home was exactly like ours but Zack had different ideas for our kitchen since our family is larger , he removed the wall that was separating the kitchen and dining room and installed base cabinets in between the two rooms with a very attractive counter top that really catches my guests attention as soon as they enter the front door. Overall i was very satisfied with the work he did for me and i would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone including my family and friends

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
