Our experience with Joan has been wonderful. She is very accommodating and scheduling with her is easy and flexible. My husband and I came to her to help transition into family planning as well as help us improve communication. While I have been in therapy before, my husband has not and was a little hesitant. After our first session- he was hooked. She listens with understanding, but ensures to offer different perspectives and strategies. She asks questions that bring to the surface things that can be addressed that we would not have considered on our own. Sometimes our session include exercises, while sometimes we simply talk through certain parts of our life. Not only has our relationship improved, my husband and I are communicating better and more effectively. We plan to continue to see Joan regularly and highly recommend to others looking for a couples therapist.

I've had other therapists who have helped me, but Alison is special. We went deeper and helped me resolve long-standing issues. Alison is smart and caring and able to get to what's really going on. I had a pattern of always choosing the wrong men, or ruining relationships with good ones. Now I'm with someone wonderful, and thanks to my work with Alison, I'm able to communicate with him about what I need. I highly recommend her!

Talking to Gabriella is like talking to a good friend:). I reached out to her after a break up and at a point in my life when I felt so lost, alone, with low self esteem, helpless, etc. She taught me how to change my perspective on my current life situation. The hypnosis facilitated my relaxation and comprehension of her advice and guidance. I have been feeling so much more relaxed since our sessions began only a few months ago. I feel happier, more positive, confident, and excited for what's to come. I have been utilizing "homework" that Gabriella gives me In order to stay on track and bring more love and happiness to my life. I am thankful to have her support, listening ear, and positive vibes there when I needed it! Highly recommend!! -

Lorraine hits all the checks of a good therapist; she is warm, open, smart, compassionate, convivial and a great listener. Among the elements that set her apart and make her outstanding are that: she is prepared to sift through lots of chatter without being sidetracked, you can enjoy a relaxed conversation with her and still come back around to what's important, she never loses focus on the issues. Lorraine is very skilled at overcoming resistance. She is also good at helping you look at your own anger from your partner's perspective. She doesn't judge, she helps us look past petty distractions to common goals and positive elements. Without being overbearing she has many therapists tricks up her sleeve, which she uses to good effect to help people in the difficult process of self examination. For us as a couple she has been very helpful in guiding us to find compromises and common ground. In every way she puts her clients needs first, in terms of scheduling, payment and within the sessions themselves, she is flexible and fair. During our treatment we transitioned from office visits to FaceTime without any hiccups. Working with Lorraine has yielded tangible improvements in our relationship. We recommend her without reservation. Gilberto and Gabrielle.

As a counseling practioner, I use discretion when selecting my own therapist and marriage counselor. Tina quickly picks up the pulse of each individual as well as the dynamic between them. Her incisive and insightful comments are offered judiciously. She maintains high standards of integrity viz. HIPAA. Her availability is flexible for working couples. She balances being a caring person and professional. I highly recommend her for couples and individual therapy based on my experience with her in both areas. S.

I talked with many coaches, therapists, and trainers. Aaron and WellThrive Elite are the best. Aaron helped me so much. He knows a lot about many things and helped me in many areas of my life. He really listens but also gives good practical coaching. WellThrive Elite helped me with fitness and coaching to lose weight, tone up, manage stress, and look better for dating and self confidence. So many types of fitness that I was never bored. He also coached me to figure out who is the right person for me to date and which career I would like. Such in depth information of different careers. What a life saver. Best personal trainer and best life coach for so many things. Thumbtack seems like a good site. But more than one coach told me that Thumbtack charges the coach a high fee when the customer messages the coach. I would just call him. I highly recommend. Here is his number: 646-535-4384. He talked to me for over an hour without charging me. He talks a lot, but all good information and definitely worth it!

It has been an amazing journey. Brent is very smart and sensitive. He has always been present, and never pushed for any "not-ready-yet" process. The conversation can be really deep if you dare to explore; psychotherapy is about challenging yourself for inner awareness and change though, so I've gladly taken that. And most importantly --My words, feelings and emotions were always seen, heard and held (instead of being packed up and thrown away). The procedure of change is so painful and scary, and I've experienced a lot of disconnections before with other therapists, but this did not happen with Brent, and I take this as the most precious part of him. We struggled a little bit at the beginning for a schedule that worked for both of us, considering my REAL crazy working hours, but that's all I can think of (for a semi-complaint). The experience turns out to deserve all the efforts.

Scott has been an invaluable therapist for me for a few years now. I've gained so many strengths and I've been able to make so many changes under his care and counseling. More recently, if it weren't for him, my situation may have eaten me alive and he was there literally every step of the way to make sure that didn't happen. His methods of therapies are wonderful. He's generous, professional, relatable, relaxing, reliable, consistent, and punctual. My favorite, though, is when he's leading into a breakthrough. He's direct enough to get you there without needing to be too "psycho-babbly". I recommend Scott 12 out of 10 times!

Judy has been a great therapist for me - from our first session, I felt comfortable in opening up and it seemed as though she had a clear approach to addressing areas I wanted to work on. She’s good about keeping in touch and tracking my progress across sessions - I would definitely recommend her!

I have been a patient of Sheri's for the past decade, attending regular sessions as well as a group therapy program. In that time, my therapy with Sheri has given me the tools I need not to just survive, but to thrive. She is empathetic, kind, intelligent and competent - an all around exceptional therapist. She has been in the trenches for many years, working with people who have faced the worst of circumstances, and she bears our suffering admirably and in the process diminishes the potency of those experiences. Sheri also empowers us to help ourselves, frequently recommending books, movies, healers, and the like. To those out there in need of help, I hope you, too, find your way to Sheri.

Dan Minuchin is an outstanding family therapist, mental health consultant, trainer, teacher and clinical supervisor. I have had the fortune of working with him and observing him in all of these roles over the past several years. I initially worked with Dan about 10 years ago when I was a supervisor at agency that provided family therapy and services to families struggling with adolescents and families involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. In this setting, he provided case consultation, supervision, and training to a team of social workers and family therapists. This model included live supervision and the use of a one way mirror. Dan would also accompany therapists on home visits to provide live consultations in the family's home. I later became a director of another similar family service program. I was able to hire Dan to provide Structural Family Therapy training to my entire clinical staff, as well as consultation, individual and group clinical supervision. His guidance and training was very well received by my staff and their skills as family therapists improved significantly. Dan is really a master trainer and has worked as a family therapist, teacher and trainer for several decades. He has an incredibly diverse personal and professional background and experience working with families of all walks of life. He is sensitive and well informed of the needs and experiences of families of color, immigrant families, LGBTQ families, blended families, Jewish Orthodox families, families struggling with substance abuse and mental illness, delinquent teens, children with special needs, and families dealing with divorce, loss and separation. I have referred many families to Dan and I feel confident that he is able to work with the most complex families of all backgrounds. Dan is thoughtful and empathic and has very high ethical standards. His structural and strategic approach to addressing problems is highly effective and families often will see progress in a short amount of time. I am a family therapist and clinician as well, and Dan has provided me with outstanding clinical supervision and guidance and has been instrumental in my own professional growth as a therapist and clinical supervisor.

I've been struggling with anxiety and anger issues since teenage years, and have tried therapy in the past but never stuck with it because I always found myself getting impatient with the therapists or the process. However, Dr Eskalyo slowly but efficiently helps me realize the benefits of psychotherapy, by digging deeper into my subconscious mind. She never makes me feel judged, or pressured. Scheduling is flexible, which works with my crazy work schedule. She's also very cooperative and patient with paperworks for my insurance. I highly recommend Dr Eskalyo, especially for those who are skeptical but would like to try therapy.

Eve and I worked together for a year and half. I had seen another therapist a few years prior who I liked, but it felt too much like a friendship, so I began editing myself. I felt comfortable being vunerable and not editing with Eve. She's an excellent listener, with insight I would not have received from a friend or close family member. I highly recommend her.

I've worked with Abe for the last 6 years - he saved my life - from a metaphorical perspective of having one, being alive, and loving my experience, to a literal one - had things continued as they were before I ran across him (through sheer luck), I could see suicide becoming more and more of a real consideration. Instead, basically, everything's changed for me now - I have boundaries now, know how and when to stand up for them, understand my childhood so much more, get along better with EVERYONE in my life now, and have a path in my life that I love. It's exciting. Pure grace that Abe's work came into my life. He's not the most conventional therapist in the world, but he just may be one of the very best, and ACTUALLY effective.

I can't recommend this wonderful therapist enough! In 2010 my sons great grandfather passed away at Calvary Hospital after a month of being an in-patient. At that time my sons were 7 and 6 years old and their mental well being after their first family loss was at the top of my priority list. Insert Walesca aka "Wally" who had not only the skill set but the compassion to guide them through their grief. She taught them the skills they need to understand it's okay to feel sadness and just as importantly how to express it. They are now 15 and 14 years old and have suffered many other losses since and have been able to cope because of the skills Wally taught them. Whenever I mention her name a big smile comes across their faces. She truly made grief bearable for them and I am forever grateful to her.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
