Sal was extremely helpful with getting me and my fiance started with some basic obedience training for our 9 month old pitbull mix rescue. He also helped me to understand what she is thinking and what she needs. A lot of people have a mindset that all dogs that are pitbull or a mix of them are aggressive nasty dogs. Not true. But I do recognize fears of others and wanted to tackle having her on the road to understanding basic commands such as no jumping up on people which can be scary for them. I feel it was the best decision to have our dog Summer start off with a private training session first because I wanted minimal distractions of a class. I would encourage that. It will take a lot of work and discipline on our end, but we know Summer will benefit from it. Thank you Sal for your help.

Our new rescue pup Roxie needed basic obedience training and we discovered Suzanne Rodda while searching the internet for local dog trainers. Suzanne knows her stuff ! We have worked with her over the last month and a half and the difference in Roxie is obvious. Suzanne's approach is to not only train your dog, but to train YOU to work with your dog as well. It's a win win combination. We had a few challenges facing us along the way BUT Suzanne's flexibility and commitment to us made working with her easy and a pleasure. She has our recommendation as an excellent trainer.

Joan is a kind and loving person, and brings these qualities to her superb dog training. She helped Sidney Cha-Cha, our miniature poodle pup, with anxiety and incessant barking. We are grateful for her assistance, and our dogs will miss her presence in our home. Highly recommended!

In 3.5 hours our pup was completely changed. We no longer fear that he will bite visitors when they enter the door. He is a much happier puppy now that he knows how to behave and we are having a lot more fun with him. All of the obedience classes that focused on treats and socializing did not work with our pup.The so called Dog Whispers were no help. Don't waste your time or money call Dr. J first.

Sean has been helping us with our Olde English Bulldog named Wilson. We adopted Wilson through a rescue group and he needed help with leash walking, obedience training and separation anxiety. Sean has been a fantastic trainer and resource for my husband and I. We are brand new dog owners and Sean is always available to help us with all of our questions and concerns. He is always emailing/texting us to check in and see Wilson's progress. Wilson has drastically changed since we first got him. His change was pretty much instant after his first meeting with Sean. Wilson still needs a bit of help, but Sean is with us every step of the way. His knowledge and experience and with dogs is unbelievable. Sean shows so much love for Wilson as if it were his own dog. I would highly recommend Sean for anyone that needs help with their pet.

I began working with Rick about a month ago to assist with my 18-month old pitbull, Petunia. Petunia had become aggressive to strangers (e.g., lunging, barking aggressively) when out in public and in the home and I was very much beside myself with how to address the behaviors. We had attempted obedience training at the pet store which did not correct the problem and she continued to worsen. People were afraid of my little pitty and I was developing a sense of hopelessness and resignation where I no longer even wanted to take her for walks and just figured we would have to live a limited lifestyle with her. As a last ditch effort to address Petunia's aggression, I had a consultation with Rick. He took an hour to meet with us to evaluate her. Petunia aggressively barked and lunged the whole time at Rick, but he thought she could be helped and we signed on for the ride. What a journey it has been. In less than a month, I have a restored sense of hope that Petunia can reach her full potential as a wonderful pet. With several training sessions and several trips to stay with Rick, Petunia is now heeling, is much more under control, is not barking aggressively or lunging on walks, and appears more calm and mellow overall. Rick has also taken much time to continuously meet and/or consult with me and my boyfriend on how to maintain the progress by teaching us how to handle Petunia on our own. We are still in the midst of Petunia's training, but I can see a complete 180 in her and am forever grateful that we made the decision to work with Rick. I highly recommend him without hesitation.

Mike is great to work with! I've come to expect that he will be prepared with an individual, and always evoling, training plan catered to my specific growth. It's clear he is passionate about being a trainer and about seeing results in his clients. He would no doubt be a great fit for anyone looking to work with a personal trainer.

Margaret helped us with our 17 month old German Shepard, Bane. We wanted to focus on some key behaviors while incorporating general obedience. Over the past 7 weeks, we have experienced a great deal working with Margaret. She provided exceptional training for Bane and us as owners. We were so pleased with the progress we were seeing, we signed on for an additional 6 weeks of training. We will be sad when we no longer need her training. Margaret is incredibly knowledgeable about her dogs' behaviors and breeds and is 100% dedicated to her dogs!

We have not completed our puppy training yet but so far all is going well. Josh connected with my puppy right away as if she knew him already and responded to his reward-based training technique right away. He also gave us a lot of information on how to care for our puppy.

Truly fantastic and unique dog training experience. Chelsea had so much patience and genuine interest as I spoke with her (endlessly, on multiple occasions) about all of my concerns about my 11-year old adopted Shiba mix who grew up as a street dog in China. Gingko has not been an easy dog for me to deal with, but Chelsea has helped me not only manage but understand her barking and snapping behaviors. She's not just interested in obedience - she wants to help create a symbiotic relationship between you and your dog, so that each of you are happy and safe. I always imagined training to be just lots of clicker-treat-clicker-treat stuff (doesn't work with Gingko, who thinks treats are a trap). But Chelsea's full of clever, practical, and easy solutions that prevent unwanted behaviors from happening in the first place. Can't recommend her highly enough.

We had the best experience working with Laura. Her expertise is second-to-none! Not only did she help us with obedience and behavioral training, her insights regarding health and congenital issues related to our breed (English Bulldog) was very valuable. Our Mabel has achieved more than I could have hoped. She is well on her way to being fully house trained and she has successfully started learning new commands which I never thought possible. I have learned a lot as a dog owner and would recommend Laura to everyone. Now that Mabel has graduated, we will miss seeing Laura during our weekly sessions.

Gus gave us excellent advice and educated us so that we better understand our dog's behavior. Our rotties responded very well to him and his training techniques and we are continuing to work on training them ourselves. I am more confident now, that we can do this! Thank you Gus!

Adam is a wonderful trainer. He is also passionate and compassionate. He takes his time. Answers questions. Does not watch the clock. He knows his stuff and will treat your dog as if it is his own. Hire him with confidence. He has helped my dog Dixie with guarding issues and overall obedience. We maintain an open dialogue and he and I have been working together for well over a year. He succeeded where two other trainers before him failed. I cannot recommend him more highly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
