The entire experience with Mary was really great from start to finish. She was friendly, professional and most importantly, genuinely passionate about what she was doing. Mary was punctual and she was immediately polite, reassuring and excited. We took plenty of photos at City Hall, while walking to the subway, during the ride and then finally at Central Park with some great fall colours in the background. The pictures came out great and we loved talking to Mary and Ali, who were courteous and professional at all times. Mary was really generous with her pricing and took into account the fact that it was just my wife and I. Unlike a lot of quotes from other photographers, hers was one of the few that really reflected this fact. We highly recommend Mary.

John was amazing & truly captured my event effortlessly through his lens! I decided to hire West End Video after comparing their rates and reviews to the competitors on Thumbtack who applied for the job. Initially, I thought to myself, " Is "West End Videos" really as good as the reviews are claiming?!?" To our pleasant surprise, John of "West End Videos" more than exceeded our expectations. To put the icing on the cake, John was extremely accommodating and also one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Prior to the event he made himself available via email and phone so that we could discuss the vision of the event in detail. He was highly professional & understood all our needs. On the day of the event, John arrived 1/2 hr early to and jumped immediately into action! Our event was huge, hosting over 3,000 people but amazingly, John was always in the right place, at the right time, he always seemed capture exactly what we wanted! Finding a videographer & photographer that truly captures the accurate tone through pictures can be difficult but John really allowed the camera to tell the story! If you decide to work with him you are guaranteed to be pleased!

When looking for a wedding photographer I called many photographers in the area, many did not get back to me, many required a consult, and most were very expensive. I just wanted someone that could take pictures of my very simple but very important (to me) event. Just as I was about to give up on photographers I found Jon. He called me back right away and made the booking process very easy, with a quick check to see if he had the date available and thankfully he was! He sent a confirmation email and then confirmed again a week before the wedding. He showed up 30 minutes before the ceremony started to get a feel for the outdoor venue. He introduced himself and was very warm and welcoming. He started taking pictures right away. He took so many pictures of my family, my husband’s family, couples and everyone in attendance; doing a great job of understanding who was who and how they were connected to the bride and groom. An added bonus is that 2 days after the event he had all of the photos emailed to me via dropbox. I couldn’t be happier with the pictures and have received many compliments from family and friends on how amazing they turned out and how pleasant Jon was. He truly captured every moment from the evening, moments I may have missed and also reminders of how wonderful the evening was. These pictures will be cherished for many years to come. I am so thankful that I found Jon and highly recommend him for any event!

Stop wasting your time looking for other photographers—Lizzie is your girl! She produced incredible photos (much more than we were expecting), had a great location recommendation, and she was just generally a pleasure to work with. I couldn’t recommend her more and I personally can’t wait for my next excuse to hire her again!

We hired Marijana to take photos of our wedding ceremony at the NYC City Hall. She was a true pleasure to work with - very patient throughout the entire (lengthy) process, and even willing to cross the Brooklyn Bridge for some post-wedding shots with the NY skyline. Marijana doesn't have years of professional training or experience, but she has a good eye and you can tell she's very passionate about her work and relationships with her clients. To me, that is really the difference between Marijana and other photographers!

Tina and I had a 90-minute headshot session at the International Center of Photogrsphy in midtown Manhattan. I asked Tina to engage a makeup artist to prepare me for the shoot; while I think she did a good job, she could not stay for the shoot itself. The last two photographers with whom I have worked had theirs stay for the duration, and it was helpful to have the makeup rechecked and touched up - especially for a woman my age. I think Tina is a really good photographer - and an artist in her own right. But sometimes her focus on expression and composition means that she doesn’t always see the details of her subject. There were numerous shots that she selected for my review that I couldn't use because a stray lock of hair was falling into my eye. I am not the one looking through the lens, and I can't see what the photographer does. One word, and I could easily have fixed it. We also spent the majority of the session with me wearing the same blouse - even though we had selected 2 additional wardrobe changes. As a result, the number of usable photos in those two changes was somewhat limited. We did come up with a number of really good headshots; Tina retouched my favorites herself, and I am having two of them reproduced as I write this. I appreciated the energy and encouragement that Tina brought to her work, and I would recommend her work to my fellow actors.

I searched for a photographer online and did my research by looking at reviews as well as the websites of several photographers. I was impressed with Jovana’s photos on her website so I booked her for headshots as well as some dance poses. I’m so glad I did all that because Jovana was an absolute pleasure to work with. So professional and made me feel at ease. The images came beautiful and I have so many great shots to choose from. I couldnt be happier!

Spike took our Engagement photos in Central Park last week, and the experience couldn’t be any better! We originally had a different date and plan in mind. But Spike was flexible and accommodated the changes in our plan. During the day of the shoot, Spike made us very relaxed. We felt at ease with his presence. He gave us directions on poses, but made sure we were comfortable with them. Spike also knows the park well, taking us to a number of his favorite locations. He was also open to our suggestions on shooting locations. We received the photos within a week of our shoot. My fiancée and I are very happy with them. They look amazing and I’m sure the photos will be our treasured memories in the years to come. One last note, we’ve reached out to a number of photographers, both on Thumbtack and elsewhere. Spike’s rate was very reasonable, especially more so now that we’ve received the photos and gone through the experience. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Spike for your photo needs!

I hire videographers all the time via Thumbtack when I speak around the country. Out of all of the people that I've hired, Andrew has been the best that I've worked with. He took the time to understand my vision for my project. He arrived early and stayed a little later than our contracted time to help me get what I needed. He is quick to respond and is very talented. He exceeded my expectations and I will hire him for future events. If you are looking for an unbelievable videographer, look no further. Andrew is the person for you.

Kate is a consummate professional. Punctual, fast, and friendly, not only did she provide great photos, she proposed slight staging tips and worked with what I had to make my apartment look even better. I scoured many other photographers' portfolios prior to working with Kate and I feel I made the right choice given her keen eye and extensive experience with real estate in particular.

Kimberlee was really wonderful to work with. She photographed my company's boat party and did that job very well. Like a true pro, Kim arrived at the perfect time, took the initiative to make her way through the chaos, found our boat, and gave herself a proper tour of the space. She communicated all of this to me as I was running behind. When I arrived, she was already photographing the few people that had arrived and had established rapport with some of them. I've worked with a lot of event photographers in the past and I've always been sensitive about making them feel like they're being pulled left and right. The first thing Kim told me after we shook hands and exchanged pleasantries was that we "must" make sure we tap her on the shoulder at any time if we wanted to take duo and group photos. I don't think I've ever heard an event photographer be so genuinely enthusiastic about saying that. I couldn't have asked for a better professional to have worked with that night. Kim meshed well with the group and delivered great images. Thank you, Kim!!!

Emily is one of the top photographers I've worked with. I hired her to shoot at a fundraiser gala and was extremely pleased. Here's me with two of my guests – isn't she great at capturing the moment? Also, Emily had the photos to me in extremely quick fashion. What a great experience!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.
