My girlfriend hinted (like beating me over the head with a 2”x4”) that she hoped a photographer would be around to capture our impending proposal. So I did what any 21st century guy would do and hit the internet. I emailed several photographers in the tri-state area, all getting back to me with varying fees and availability. I found Neil Blake on Thumbtack. His personal website showed his experience, so I explained to him that I would like for him to secretly photograph my proposal. I detailed that I had hired a caricaturist (if you’re reading this and also are in the market for a caricaturist, look no further than Jessica du Preez) that would be drawing me on one knee proposing to my girlfriend though we would be sitting next to each other on a park bench. He agreed, and we were set. The big day was a beautiful October Sunday in Hoboken. So perfect, in fact, that there were literally dozens of people taking pictures (with what looked to me like high-end cameras). My girlfriend and I walked around the general area that I had laid out for the caricaturist to set up and for Neil to be ready to find us. I literally had no idea what Neil (or my caricaturist looked like), and so I wasn’t sure if people were taking pictures of us or of the scenery (and it turned out that it was Neil taking a few of those pictures, he really did a wonderful job at being so discreet). Once I found my caricaturist and the drawing was in progress, he would walk by non-chalantly (pretending to be one of these everyday photographers enjoying the beautiful day) and marvel at how well the drawing was coming along and ask my caricaturist if it would be alright if he could take a picture while she sketched and ask us if he could take our picture (of course it was okay! But my girlfriend was still not entirely in the know. It was all for her, and it was perfect. Neil was fantastic. I can’t believe how they went above and beyond to really play the parts that I asked them to play). He walked away and took some other discreetly long-distance shots, shots from behind, everything. You can really tell the entire story from the pictures – leading up to the caricature, during the caricature, after she said yes. And I think that’s more than I could have hoped for when I hired him to be our photographer. After the gig was up, he brought us around for 30 minutes or so posing us against the skyline and taking literally hundreds of pictures. I really feel like I got a lot for my money, and I don’t see how I would do it any differently (and that goes for not only Neil, but also Jessica). I am still blown away by how flawless the day turned out for me and my now fiancée – partly due to the fact that I did not know what Neil (nor my caricaturist, Jessica du Preez, for that matter (whom I also highly recommend, but that is for another review)) looked like, partly because I was hoping for true perfection, and partly due to the stress of getting several pieces (timing, two people (caricaturist and photographer) working together that have never even met, etc) into place without my girlfriend knowing (okay, so she knew it was coming. But she did not know how and what I had planned, so she was still very much in the dark). At the onset of this review, I had hoped that it would be more about the professionalism and expertise of Neil and less about me and the proposal, but let my excitement and joy be a testament to him. For any function at all, consider hiring Neil Blake to capture the story. He will do a superb job.

Great photographer. Made my experience really enjoyable and comfortable. Kevin does a great time communicating with me and directing his shots where I am confident and comfortable in front of a camera. The photos taken were amazing and I hope to have another session with Kevin again soon.

Bin did an excellent job as our videographer for our son's Christening. We were very happy with the results. In addition, she also took several pictures of our family when she was not using the video camera. She has a great eye-- spent a significant amount of time making sure the pictures were the best quality. Guests commented to us that the photographer really spent a lot of time getting great pictures. Bin is dependable and easy to reach. She is also very personable and is a pleasure to work with!

Spike took our Engagement photos in Central Park last week, and the experience couldn’t be any better! We originally had a different date and plan in mind. But Spike was flexible and accommodated the changes in our plan. During the day of the shoot, Spike made us very relaxed. We felt at ease with his presence. He gave us directions on poses, but made sure we were comfortable with them. Spike also knows the park well, taking us to a number of his favorite locations. He was also open to our suggestions on shooting locations. We received the photos within a week of our shoot. My fiancée and I are very happy with them. They look amazing and I’m sure the photos will be our treasured memories in the years to come. One last note, we’ve reached out to a number of photographers, both on Thumbtack and elsewhere. Spike’s rate was very reasonable, especially more so now that we’ve received the photos and gone through the experience. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Spike for your photo needs!

We can't say enough about the incredible job that Kal did with our Wedding Video. His attention to detail was phenomenal. When we asked for him to be sure he'd get all the big moments, he said he would do that and much more and in the end, he exceeded our expectations by a mile (and then some!). He arrived early to get great shots of the venue, got all of the 'must have' moments (along with candid footage), incorporated some photos into the video and let us choose the music, which played to transition to different scenes and as a backdrop to the photo montage. He used the music so creatively and wisely. We've watched the video numerous times now and enjoy it just as much as we were watching it for the very first time. We gave copies to our family members too and they gave the same rave reviews! In a word: AMAZING! We would hire KC Kreative Arts again in a minute and glad that he was our first choice in Videographers and will be our only choice in the future. Kal was prompt to answer every email, professional throughout the process and delivered as promised, on every request and commitment. Let him capture your event, so you can relive and enjoy it for years to come. Thanks again for making our BIG day that much more memorable! Sincerely, Kathy and Tony

We hired Leibman Productions for our daughter's Bat Mitzvah. We were looking for a reliable and creative videographer who would capture the moments most important to us. Andrew covered the event from start to finish and also provided a comprehensive highlight video. The video work was professionally shot and recorded along with music, speeches and voice overs. We also needed a music montage of photos and video created close and they helped us tremendously at the last minute. Thank you Leibman Productions, we appreciate all your time and efforts with this very special family occasion.

It’s a good choice to hire Anton as our wedding Videographer. He is very dedicated to his role and gave us a great memory of our wedding through making customized video after many editing requested by us. He showed up 1 hour earlier than scheduled time and stayed until the end of our 6 hours long wedding. We can see him busy shooting during entire wedding, trying to catch every great moment of our wedding. Anton finished editing the first draft of wedding video within 3 days after the wedding, and patiently editing the video over and over again according to our requests. Eventually, we had everything we want in our 8 minutes long wedding video and we are happy with the end products Anton presented to us. I would gave him 5 stars and highly recommend him to other people!

I hired Lemar for a surprise engagement at the Rockefeller centre in NYC. Lemar was so great. He made the occasion so easy and was amazing to work with. He had already scoped the area we were shooting in and had placing in mind for us to shoot after he event too. This gave me peace of mind on the day which was already very high pressured and important to be just right. He provided great high quality photos and video of the event. I am so happy with his work. I highly recommend this man. He is an artist and truly a nice guy too. Thanks Lemar!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
