About

Bourque was great to work with. She creates a very relaxed environment and helps you find the voice you never knew you had. I never thought I was able to sing, but after a few lessons with her, I realized that I actually had a decent voice hidden away!

About

Thumbtack has given my studio the "Best of 2015 award" for Voice lessons in New York City. Reach your vocal potential! No matter what style of music you sing, breath and resonance must work together to create the desired sound. My studio includes professional performers and serious hobby enthusiasts. (What do I mean by serious? Taking at least two lessons monthly.) Talent is a given, but reaching your vocal potential requires work, discipline and regular study. Though I am versed in the latest scientific advances and trends in vocal pedagogy, my teaching style is based on the Lamperti Italian bel canto techniques of balanced registration. To sing well, a singer must know how to play their body on command. Balancing breath management with resonance usage, and making necessary adjustments in registration produces the desired vocal sound. As a teacher, my goal is to provide every singer with the proper tools for producing the desired sound in the healthiest way possible. The constant is always breath balanced against the resonance usage. When your breath is freed correctly, you are free to communicate efficiently in song. All new students are evaluated to determine their current level of ability, correct vocal classification, current and potential range, and preferred learning modalities. All areas of voice performance are addressed including breath management, registration, resonance, vocal health, repertoire suggestions, diction, and performance preparation. Basic musicianship is addressed if needed. This includes how to read a musically notated vocal line, understanding time signatures and rhythm, understanding the differences in style, learning how to inform a lyric, mic techniques (where applicable), and suggestions for appropriate repertoire. Though most of my students see immediate improvement, learning to master your voice is a journey that stretches over the course of your entire career. It boils down to "practice, practice, practice" which includes performing along the way. I look forward to helping you on your vocal journey. Please note: Internet lessons are available via OOVOO (ID is "singnow") to clients I have seen in person PRIOR to the Internet. This has provided solutions to my X Factor clients while they taped in LA and to music theater pros during extended out-of-town tours. I only recommend Internet lessons as a Band-Aid solution if the client cannot appear in the studio. VoIP technology is not a substitute for the sound produced in person and is also unreliable (think about how often a live feed is interrupted while you watch remote broadcasts). Here's a note for parents: I am very experienced in preparing students for performing arts university programs and for high school auditions. These programs are very competitive. The longer your child has studied, the better his/her chance to win a place. I recommend students begin studying weekly at least one month in advance of the audition date for high school auditions and ideally at the start of junior year (or before) for college preparation. Vocal study counts as a "soft" in college entrance consideration when the student has participated in vocal solo festivals like NYSSMA. Testimonials are as follows: "As a teacher, Maria Fattore is caring and perceptive. Most importantly, she is able to supply her students with technical help that goes well beyond imagery into concrete, intelligible technical adjustments to solve vocal issues." -- Ira Siff, The Metropolitan Opera "Working with Maria Fattore is the fastest way from point A to point B. Every time I work with her, I find more vocal freedom. She is the best in the city!" -- Babs Winn, AEA "In a nutshell, Maria not only teaches amazing technique, but she also gives you the skills to survive a long run." -- Kenny Wade Marshall, AEA "Maria is amazing! She gave me a technique, and our work landed me on X Factor. She's one of the rare ones that actually knows what she's talking about. She will make you better! I love working with her." -- Al Calderon, AEA "Maria's interactive teaching is efficient, and her feedback addresses my vocal issues scientifically and visually. The homework assignments are tailor-made for me and have helped accelerate my progress, improve my tone and range, and given me more vocal freedom. She is a solid, responsible and knowledgeable educator." -- L. Wang, Teacher "My 14-year-old daughter is preparing for fall auditions, and we were referred to Maria. My daughter learned more in one session with Maria than she had learned after 20 sessions with another teacher. It was an easy decision to make a change." -- Virginia B., Parent

About

I've taken voice lessons for nearly 10 years and as a result have had a number of different teachers, but I feel my voice is the strongest and most stable it has ever been after studying with Katie. She hits the nail on the head with her visuals - unlike other instruments, you can't see what you're playing when you sing, so being able to understand what your teacher is getting at is crucial to the process. Katie far surpasses any teacher I've had in this way. Aside from her solid vocal and teaching skills, she's a joy to be around. Voice lessons are a much more pleasant experience when your teacher makes you feel comfortable enough to laugh at your own mistakes, brush them off, and go for it again. There is literally no judgment in the room - only encouragement and construction. I absolutely would (and have in the past) recommend Katie to beginner and advanced students.

About

I am taking voice lessons with Vivian. This is the first time in my singing career that I feel like I am making great strides in singing. I’ve been singing and taking lessons for years. I’ve now blossomed. I am singing my highs higher and my lows lower. I didn’t know that I had it in me. My mom has been encouraging my singing since I elementary school. She’s been telling me that I can have a career in singing. Now as a senior in HS faced with college options I’ve really started thinking about career choices. Vivian has me singing a different tune, she not only is bringing out my best voice but she is showing me life’s realities as well. Thank you Vivian for bringing out my best.

About

My vocal lessons are designed to open up vocal registers, extend the vocal range, iron-out break areas, and build dynamics within the voice. I believe everyone has the ability to sing, it's only that some people have more developed vocal chord coordination than others. I have seen time and time again students come into class who classify themselves, or have be classified as tone-def from past teachers, only to develop freedom, range and great tone in just a few months - it just takes diagnostic focused practice and patients. My classes are held at my studio in Hell's Kitchen New York City (or online via Skype and FaceTime). In my relaxing and comfortable setting, we'll work one-on-one to build your voice by first diagnosing what's blocking you from achieving vocal excellence, then we'll go ahead and design a specific vocal exercise program to suit. Lesson Rates: Private in studio 1 hour lesson- $60

Rebecca has been my daughter's voice coach for years. She is an incredible teacher! She has vast musical abilities, but also has great knowledge about competitions, scholarships etc that my daughter has directly benefited from. My daughter went from singing casually to winning an international vocal competition. That was a direct result of Rebecca's lessons and encouragement. Rebecca is a terrific teacher ... One I would (and have) highly recommend!

About

Are You In Your Best Voice? If you are using your voice to advance your career as a singer, keynote speaker or performer, you know that working from your best vocal capability is extremely important. You have to breathe properly in order to reach your full range of notes, develop more stamina, relaxation and more power for projection. Being an active performer myself, I know all these too well. You can expand your vocal range, and your career, by working with the same techniques used by many prominent entertainment and business professionals referred to as Controlled Relaxation technique. I can help students reach their voice potential quickly having been a vocal instructor for more than 15 years.

About

Learn the music you love! I offer piano lessons for beginners through advanced. I teach all ages. I offer traditional teaching with the reading of the main two clefs (bass and treble), music theory, immediate approach to the keyboard, immediate exercise that develop the presence of your fingers in the keyboard as well as the strength and speed of your fingers. Start to play your favorite music from the very first lesson! Learning piano includes the following: * ear training * sight reading * music harmony * improvisational skills * knowledge of music history * counterpoint * technical mastery (note by note passage at every speed, octaves, double thirds, trills, arpeggios, scales, etc.) Technical mastery is not limited to the above. I also offer mastery of touch (how to approach the keyboard for a legato, articulate touch and semi-legato) and mastery of phrasing. The music phrase is different, depending on the composer and the period when the music was composed. I have complete command of knowledge from Bach to Broadway songs. Piano lessons are available also in a more easy-going way of learning which is reading only with the treble clef with the complete understanding of the chord symbols. This style of learning is definitely for jazz standards, Broadway and pop music. I offer singing lessons or vocal coaching for pop singers. The philosophy of my teaching here is based on the music that you want to learn. I don't do yoga lessons or relaxation lessons. I do start from the music. From the phrasing, you'll know where to breath. From the music, you'll know what kind of voice timbre to use (you don't sing a Broadway aria like a Beatles song). From the music, you'll learn the text by memory, understanding what kind of expression to use according to the meaning of the text itself. Warming up of the voice is essential for successful learning. I resume it in two essential points which are as follows: * Knowledge of your vocal range without trying to stretch where your voice can't arrive and will never arrive (find the beauty of your real voice) * Blending of lower middle and high range I offer performance opportunities for the most talented. I also offer vocal coaching for classical and opera singers. Identify from the beginning the timbre of your voice as well as your voice range. Some unlucky students have been convinced to belong to a voice range that is not theirs! I have been dealing with more than one case with singers that think to be a mezzo, but instead, they would be making a great career as alto! Once you know with certainty and confidence what is your range and timbre, you can direct your energy to the right kind of repertoire. This is very important especially for those who want to pursue singing at a professional level. You don't need to waste your time, money and energy in the wrong repertoire. For example, if you are a soprano leggero, you don't want to sing R.Wagner or G.Verdi. Other important aspects to consider include the following: * Enlarging your voice range in order to get your instrument more complete without forcing your voice and breathing according to the music phrase * Pitch control without the use of too much vibrato (I am not against it, but I am when the vibrato compromises the pitch.) * Clarity in the speed * Projection of your voice (The projection of your voice might sound great in the music studio, but would that be the same if you sing at the met?)

I have a full library of music. Learn to sing with ease; I am letting you connect to the text of your music. I hone the skills that will increase your ability to do your best work without a coach or teacher, and ones that will heighten your awareness! Work on the material that is appropriate to your personality and voice type. Below are my clients' reviews: "I had never really connected with a voice teacher until I met Anna. I feel, for the first time, like someone is speaking my language. I understand my voice now as my own, instead of what a teacher tells me I should sound like, or trying to fit into a sound or measure up to an idea in my head. It feels like I'm uncovering the voice that I have inside, but have never heard until now. Lessons are engaging, and challenging, and they are a partnership from beginning to end!" - Hannah Sloat, Equity Actress (Soprano), "War Horse" Lincoln Center, Bushwick Shakespeare Repertory, Artspower "I've been studying voice with Anna Winthrop for two years now, and she is unlike any vocal teacher I've ever worked with. Her approach is unique and individualized to my specific vocal needs, and she knows how to explain proper vocal technique in a way that is clear and totally accessible. Under her tutelage, my voice has improved dramatically, and I'm now able to take on songs that previously would have been too difficult. Anna has given me great repertoire suggestions, and has also shared endless words of wisdom in regards to the audition process and the business of acting as well. As a person, she is enthusiastic, supportive, and selfless, and her personality makes the process that much more enjoyable! Anna has taught me how to be more expressive vocally and how to belt effortlessly and with flawless technique. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone, regardless of the musical style he or she specializes in, looking to improve his or her voice and technique!" - Elizabeth Wharton, Actress, Soprano, Mix, and High Belt, Artspower, :Yearbook: A Highschool Musical" (Off-Broadway) "My experience with Anna has been so incredible. She has helped me prepare for auditions, expertly gifting me with technique, breath, tone, relaxation, ease, and sculpting a dynamic performance arc out of the material. She specifically addresses the needs of the modern musical theatre actor, and has helped me to become more agile and versatile, allowing me to sing in a myriad of styles often within the same show or even song. Anna pulls from an amazing education and life of experience onstage to help her students achieve grace amidst the pressure, tumult, and joy of modern theater. All of these are offered in a gorgeous studio for an insanely affordable price!" - Wade McCollum, Equity and SAG Actor and Bari-Tenor, "Jersey Boys" (Norm, San Francisco and Chicago Company), "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (Hedwig - LA Ovation Award, Los Angeles Drama Critic's Circle Award, Backstage West Garland Award), "Bat Boy the Musical" (Bat Boy), and "Cabaret" (Emcee) "Anna Winthrop is a phenomenal teacher. Her strength lies in her technical articulateness, combined with her understanding and patience for my process as a student. I always feel comfortable with her, especially since I know that she is a working actress and singer herself. She knows how to incorporate instruction on relieving tension, acting a song, and having fun; basically, you name it, and she knows how to do it! Anna puts me at ease even when I am cracking, yet I trust her to tell me the truth when I need it. I recommend her ten times over." - Crystal Boyd, Actress, Soprano, Mix, and Belt, Featured: Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, PBS "I thought I knew how to sing before I began lessons with Anna. I had been singing my whole life, but had never been formally trained. I figured I had a lot to learn, but I didn't realize the scope and breadth of what I didn't know. Anna possesses a very comforting ability to communicate both the abstract and practical, physical yet difficult to grasp concepts involved in singing properly, and she does so with an ease and personal touch that allow the student to completely relax and focus on the task at hand. She's completely renovated the way I produce sound, and in the process, she has given me a renewed confidence and determination to put into practice the techniques I've learned from her. It's a wonderful feeling to know I've found someone I can constantly return to to gently remind me to not fall back into my old bad habits." - Rick Cekovsky, SAG Actor and Baritone, Tisch, RADA, Midtown Theater Festival, Hudson Shakespeare Co., "Fools and Lovers" (Off-Broadway) "Anna Winthrop is a rare find of a voice teacher. Her instruction is clear and specific, and she follows exercises with an explanation of how they effect the vocal mechanism. She is a great champion of her students, combining her technical expertise with her performance experience. I have always found her to be helpful and accommodating, and she is happy to direct her students to good technique and great performance." - Brady Amoonclark, Actress and Mezzo-Soprano, NY Artists Unlimited, Penguin Repertory, Bare Shakespeare "After having a vascular polyp removed from my vocal cord, I started studying with Anna four years ago. With her great passion for teaching proper technique, she gave me confidence and had me singing stronger than ever. Anna also has a gentle heart and makes me feel comfortable, allowing me to truly enjoy getting to the next level in my singing journey." - Keith Freer, Lyric Baritone "I find voice lessons with Anna both deeply enjoyable and thorough. She's great with technique and doesn't let you off the hook easily! At the same time, she makes sure that there is enough time to enjoy the songs you are working on, while giving you very to-the-point feedback. She is highly focused (and fun) and definitely put me on the road to viewing my voice as a professional instrument." - Emma Blijdenstein, Coloratura Soprano "I can't recommend Anna highly enough. She has a solid, comprehensive technical background, combined with a fun delivery. Anna has led me forward, enabling me to make consistent progress over my two years of studying with her." - Matt Dundas, Tenor, Singer and Songwriter "The first criterion in anyone's mind when looking for an instructor is technical prowess, yet most people neglect the fact that all the skills and knowledge in the world come to nothing without the ability to convey it. Anna, apart from being exceptionally versed in the vocal arts, is such a flexible and adaptive communicator that she could teach tone-deaf, 2 year olds to sing operatically. Emphatic testimony aside, she's fun, lively and easygoing; She is an instructor with an a-plus grade!" - Ilya Chernyatyev, Tenor

I'm getting married April 14, 2013 and would like to sing a song called Next to Me by Emeli Sande to my husband. He is a fantastic singer but I am not. For some reason he likes for me to sing to him although my voice isn't great. He thinks if I practice I could only get better. Our first date was doing karaoke so singing is big for us.
