I hired James to do a kitchen renovation for me at my home, and it was a great decision. From beginning to end the service and professionalism was top notch. The quality of work provided was excellent as well. James and his crew also did work for my parents, redoing their bathroom which also yielded the same results. Excellent work and service. I would highly recommend Global Housing Contractors to anyone looking to do home improvements.

I hired Johnny to work on a few things around my apartment: hang my flat screen tv and hide the wires; hang curtain rods and three large mirrors in the living room; hang shelves and hooks in the bathroom; and the biggest undertaking, build a custom closet system in one of my bedrooms. Johnny arrived and was super friendly, accommodating, knowledgable and professional. He worked quickly and efficiently, making sure to keep me involved with each placement decision along the way. I have already hired him again for a couple of more projects around my home and definitely reccomend him!

He is not only a really nice guy, but he does terrific work. He followed up with us continually to make sure that we were satisfied. I will DEFINITELY be hiring him again for future home improvement projects and recommending him to ALL of my friends! His rates are reasonable and he has COI for those of you that live in Co-ops. I had an overall great experience with Sino Empire. Their response time to my calls and emails was impeccable. John came right away and he gave me a free estimate, their quote was perfect, it worked with my budget. John made sure that I understood everything step by step. Their quote was written in detail. John and his team did a great job on my roof . They kept their promise and finished the job within the time frame. I am hiring them for my kitchen remodel and painting for my summer home. I would recommend John and his company to anyone no doubt. I'm very happy with their work.

Don and his partner were extremely efficient and helpful in mounting my TV. They were clearly very experienced, and even came back later in the day when I couldn't make the first appointment time. The TV looks perfect on the wall, and it was all done for a very reasonable price. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for small jobs around their home or apartment.

We Hired Peta-Gaye after my husband and I had just purchased our vacation home in Tribeca, we live in Connecticut and have always wanted a place in the city. We loved the building, location and layout of our new 3 bedroom home, the only problem was, the apartment was boring and had absolutely zero lighting. So after a few back and forth ideas between my husband and I, we finally agreed (meaning my husband agreed) it was time to hire a designer. After interviewing a few designers that we where not very impressed by, we met Peta and a she was so personable and attentive we decide to go with her! During our design consultation Peta brought up modern lighting ideas that ended up transforming our boring apartment into a spicy vacation home that we always wanted. I feel like we did it together! We worked with Peta for 4 months, we love our new lighting design for our bedroom with the new wall sconces, chandelier and wall art. In the living room I love our trimless recessed lights, who knew there was such a thing , they are glorious! The best part was once the design was done she helped us find a lovely contractor who we ended up rehiring to re-do our floors for our home in Connecticut. Peta also helped us with project management, to make sure things where going smoothly, this was valuable to us because we live so far away, so she was like our onsite representation. We love love love our new apartment and I know for sure we would not be as happy as we are without Peta’s help. I am so proud to have my friends and family over to show off the new home. I would recommend Peta to anyone needing spruce up his or her home or needing lighting help!

I have used ideal contracting for several projects around my home and my parents home. Cesar is a phenomenal craftsman. He is punctual and professional with all that he does in the projects that I have hired him for. I have had a remodel for my basement and two bathrooms that he is handled. He came in on budget and finished in a timely matter. You could tell his craftsmanship is above the rest and he worked well with my family to complete the project. I would recommend idea contracting for any project. The quality of a deal contract service is bar none.

I purchased a home which needed a total remodel. I contracted DNR to take on the work and they did an amazing job. I wanted to change the layout of the kitchen to add sliding glass doors and they gave me exactly what I pictured- I get so many compliments on my kitchen. I also wanted to change the half bathroom into a full bath, which I thought would be impossible. After knocking down some walls and breaking through the floor, they were able to get the plumbing into place to expand the bathroom add a glass shower stall. I couldn't be happier with the outcome and I always refer them to anyone I know that needs work done.

Working with Mocca construction & his team painting my entire house which is around 1200 square feet was a dream. Communication was great from the start and carried all the way through the project. The attention to detail in their work was amazing and my project was completed exactly when they said it would be. Very pleased and would definitely recommend and use them again in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
