Dr. Leisa Herrera of Vision Legacy completed many projects for me. She was responsible for helping me redesign my resume and cover letter (which landed me a job better than I expected); she counseled me on my career path (and wasn't shy about providing critiques) and coached me for my interview; she wrote my wedding program from start to finish and all my pastor had to do was read it; she planned and officiated the funeral service for my grandma (complete with obituary and PowerPoint presentation) and I call on her to edit and critique my essays for school - which always get rave reviews.  She's tough, thorough and fair.  The only negative is that if you have an appointment with her and are even a minute late - you'll have to reschedule. She's strict with time. I continue to be a client and am hope that this works out for her. I think she could help a lot of people! (Niecey W.)

It was my pleasure to work with Lorrie from approximately 2010 to 2013. Lorrie was working as a Technical Editor on protocols and clinical study reports and I was a study manager. Lorrie was always professional and kind in her interactions. Her writing recommendations were very helpful and appropriate. I would recommend Lorrie without hesitation.

About

Hello! I am a graduate of Haverford College and an aspiring travel writer! I was recently accepted into a NASA program in Houston to fly an experiment in a zero-gravity aircraft. I also lived in a remote area of the Altai Republic, Siberia for a month and a half on a self-designed volunteer project for a wildlife conservation organization. I am a lover of how words are used as tools to craft emotion and personality and have been writing as a hobby since elementary school. I was placed into the highest reading classes all through grade school and have more notebooks than I care to count at this point. In second grade, I had my school bind little "books" for me that I'd written and later on in school, I helped run the school literary publication. These days, I'm doing some tutoring, helping my dad run the family business, and going on the occasional reckless travel adventure. As an aspiring writer, I'm always looking for more work in writing! And that's where YOU come in! Whether you need a writing tutor, an enthusiastic editor of lengthy papers or someone to write some copy for your business, I am more than happy to provide my services and my love of words. Besides my love of writing and travel, I am a scientist and have been fencing at the national level since I was seven. I've run headlong into freezing glacial lakes, stood on the rim of a volcanic crater in Costa Rica above the clouds, hiked remote islands in Maine, camped next to moose in the wilderness and waded through muck in the Florida Everglades with large gators nearby. Someday, I want to live in a tree-house of my own construction. I love visiting new places, trying weird new foods and camping in the woods where I'm not supposed to. Let me know how I can be of service to your writing project, business or anything else that might require writing expertise. I can provide my resume upon request. Looking forward to hearing from you! Best, Alice

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
