Ellen, was a lot of fun to work with. We planned a cocktail party for 40-50 for my 45th Bday at the very last minute. She made over 500 pcs of appetizers, created a custom dish (which was delicous) at my request, and helped me plan the cocktails to be served. The upshot is the party was a success, the food was a hit and Ellen and her bartender/server Josh added to the party as I have an open kitchen. I would definitely work with her again and recommend her to friends.

Chris prepared a really great dinner for a party of 12 at our apartment for my husband's 30th. The food was absolutely delicious and creative. Overall, it was all great but there were a few areas of improvement; it was a little surprising that he didn't bring with him his own knives and that the bartender he used didn't bring any equipment with him (shaker, mixer, etc.)which we were told he'd be bringing. With that said, this was not a deal breaker for us as the food was delicious, creatively prepared on site, and presented well to all our guests.

We celebrated my husband's 50th birthday yesterday. Chef Lauren of Bacco Catered Events was, from our first contact, very professional, courteous, and had an immediate response to any questions or doubts. She was very flexible and very helpful during the planning, finding solution to any problems. We planned this cocktail party for 50 people in 1 month. The execution was amazing. The food was beautiful, delicious and plentiful. The staff was poised, worked non-stop and very attentive. I heard positive comments throughout the party from my guests, and several asked me where I found this amazing caterer and staff. We had a great party thanks to Chef Lauren and her great staff I recommend her with no hesitation.

Tamara catered an in-store cocktail party for 70 people/ 2.5 hours. We were very impressed with all aspects of the booking and service. She gave us a fantastic menu to choose from and worked within our budget and wants even going above and beyond by providing additional menu options we did not request. Tamara was able to work in a small space and the entire event was seamless - I highly recommend Tamara for your catering needs.

Dan just cooked for and catered a cocktail party for my sons engagement on the roof of my building. I was very nervous since there would be such a mix of people and ages and Dan knocked it out of the park, the foot was outstanding and the service just as good. Working with Dan and his family was an absolute pleasure and they all understand exactly what it takes to make a party successful and deliver it in spades

I contacted Adolfo Silverio of Manjar Boutique Catering to help me with a cocktail party for 80 people last weekend. Because I was planning from a distant city, I was understandably nervous about getting everything arranged and accounted for. From the very first email, Adolfo put my fears to rest. He was very professional, answered all of my questions and made suggestions of things I had not even thought of. He did two walk throughs of the venue beforehand, suggested furniture arrangement, and had everything planned before the night of the party. The party itself was a breeze for me--the food was unique and delicious, the staff was right on top of things (as hostess, the staff made sure my wine glass stayed full--I never had to excuse myself to go to the bar), and everything flowed smoothly. The whole experience was exceptional, and the best part was Adolfo's timely communication--if he said he would phone me at 5 pm, the phone rang at 5 pm. All my emails were answered promptly, and as I stated before, this all went a long way towards making me feel like the party would be a great success--and it was!

Joe and his staff catered my Brooklyn wedding. The food was delicious! My guests can't stop talking about the wonderful variety and quality of the cocktail hour and the dinner. LCI Caterers is beyond fairly priced and Joe even got me in touch with a great rental company for my china and glassware. The staff was amaizingly attentive. My guests' glasses were never empty and they did a wonderful job of bussing tables. They even did the room flip between ceremony and reception and cleaned up and broke down tables at the end of the night even though they weren't the ones who brought the tables. The champagne was perfeclty timed out for toasting and everything on the catering end ran smoothly and was extremely organized. I can't rave about Joe and his amazing staff enough! They helped me have the wedding of my dreams!

We celebrated our 1st year wedding anniversary and hosted a cocktail party for the occasion with approximately 50 guests. We hired Kulinary Kings to prepare an assortment of hors d'oeuvres that consisted of beef, chicken and seafood. In addition to dessert. Chef Gregory Evans prepared the food to perfection. Everything he prepared was so delicious. The chicken salad on gourmet black pepper cracker and the filet over sweet potato was to die for. Our guests are still raving about the food and service. He arrived on time and immediately started preparing the food. We also had two servers and one bartender. They were all professionally dressed. Our guests were very impressed and appreciative that they wore rubber gloves when handling the food. The Servers were very professional and attentive ensuring that everyone was okay. In fact, my husband and I never had to look for them, as they were always there ensuring that we were okay. Very friendly and sweet young ladies. We had a signature drink "Bohemian" (chambord, peach vodka and champagne). The Bartender wasn't familiar with this cocktail but was very eager to learn how to make it. She worked with me to get it to perfection. Our guests loved it. She was also able to make and keep up with whatever drink requests our guests had. She did not become overwhelmed by the number of requests...very friendly and professional. We will definitely hire Kulinary Kings for our next event and request to have the same young Ladies accompany him...although we're sure that his entire staff are just as friendly and professional as the three young Ladies who worked our event. We are so happy that we chose Kulinary Kings. Awesome job! Carl & Diane

Peter and his professional staff made the event painless and enjoyable (at-home cocktail party wedding reception for 68 people). They worked efficiently behind the scenes during the event so I never had to worry about food and beverage serving. Beautiful presentation, impeccable service with a smile, and most importantly - tasty! They set up 4 hours in advance and cleaned up our home exactly as they found it.

Carol's catering was great! The food was very good, perfect for our event. We hosted around 200 people for a cocktail party, and everyone loved the food and had plenty to eat. Carol was very attentive, kind and responsive. We had to change the menu and delivery time a couple of times, and she was very helpful and on time, she was very understanding and diligent.

Very professional, but also very personable & relaxed. Was prepared with ideas & settings. this was a small dinner party, about 20 people. the table setting had a Fall deco & was quite lovely. The food, some catered, some prepared by party planner, was delicious. The quests were very impressed. I would definitely request Mrs. Worthington's services again!

We used Brenda for a small dinner party of about 20 people over a few hours. The food was delicious. Brenda was very receptive to providing an alternative choice for our diners that preferred fish, and also accommodated us because one diner had a shellfish allergy. She and her servers were very gracious and helpful, and Brenda always greeted our requests with a smile. If I had to offer one suggestion for improvement, I would have liked more of a guide for portion sizes. However, all of our guests enjoyed themselves, so the evening was a success.

JP catered a party for us of about 40 adults and 20 kids and we had a great experience working with him - highly recommend his services! He was responsive and flexible during the planning phase, able to modify his gameplan day-of when our rooftop venue got rained out :( and prepped and served the food efficiently, beautifully and notably, without needing anything from us as hosts, letting us truly enjoy the party. On top of all that, all the guests loved the food itself and several have inquired about contacting JP for their own events. I’m happy to make those connections because JP is truly a great chef and a consummate professional!

Solid performance... We got a full event package with 5 passed appetizers, wine, beer, plus 2 servers and 2 bartenders. We had some big hitting investors coming in and needed a good looking spread in a pinch. They delivered a tasty cocktail event for our office and we will go to RSVP again for our next event.

We had a cocktail party in our home for about 100 people. Larry and his team did a fabulous job. The food was delicious and original and substantial enough to make a meal. My favorites were the crispy chicken and mustard aioli and the lamb tacos. The team was courteous and extremely professional. I would hire Elemental catering again in a moment!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
