Johnny was extremely reliable, communicative and did a fantastic job. Came with little notice prepared to put up numerous large artwork throughout the house, assembled 4 intense looking Ikea dressers, and even came last minute the next day to put up further hooks. He took measurements for an additional job I've asked him to do of putting up floating shelves from refurbished wood for the kitchen. His knowledge and aesthetic seem to be on point.

Gesnel expanded and reframed our closet and then installed an IKEA module in the space. He was always very professional and quick to respond. We trusted him to work in our home while we were away on vacation and do not regret this decision. He sent frequent emails with pictures of the work and kept us informed with any concerns he may have. He also cleaned pretty thoroughly after completing the project. We plan to hire him for future construction projects in our home.

I hired Jay Quin Contracting to replace a set of basement stairs and install pavers in my backyard. The work they did was outstanding and was beyond and thing I could expect. After they completed this work I rehired them to create a room in the basement. They explained the whole plan before starting. Jay Quin Contracting is an excellent company that strives to fully satisfy. They truly listened to my desires and made sure to explain all possible options and limitations that could lie ahead. They have a trustworthy, courteous and hardworking group of craftsman. The end was everything and more than I was hoping for. You made my family very happy and proud of all the work you did. Thank you!‎

Peter Hart has done both residential and commercial architectural drawings for me. He is professional and knows what he's doing he has great ideas and great connections with the building and planning and zoning people. He did the architecture for a new car dealership with rooftop parking, turned an old warehouse into a different car dealership and turned our contemporary home into a colonial look. I can't imagine there is anything he can not do.

We hired Carroll Construction for an addition and couldn't be happier. The owner/operator Mike Carroll was extremely professional, knowledgable and price competitive. He completed the job in a timely manner even after we made several chages to the original plans. Our project was 40k and Mike stayed within a few hundred dollars on his original estimate. That is what I would call exemplary. We recently recommended him to family members for a large scale project.

As a result of Hurricane Sandy, I suffered a total loss of all assets. A very difficult time. Len was there from the start providing complete architectural services to rebuild my home. Len helped a number of residents in my same situation and continues to help a number of other Long Beach residents recover as well. Len was professional, reliable, knowledgeable, and kept my budget in mind. He remained involved throughout the process as I needed him. He was very easy to talk to and work with, making a difficult time easier. Definitely recommend him!

It was a joy to work with Sarika Bajoria on improving my home environment! Her mindful approach to design was a real eye-opener for me and encouraged me to see many aspects of my apartment in a completely new way. I realized that I was not taking advantage of numerous emotional connections – both from my past and in the present – that are important for my house to actually be the sanctuary I have long desired. Using a one-on-one conversational and empathetic style, she first gradually opened up memories and associations I had either forgotten or stored away many years ago. She then guided me through a fun and engaging process that helped me to see the potential relationship between my current space and those past experiences of “home” that I remember so warmly. After these two stages, she then proposed practical and amazingly easy ways in which I could achieve a really authentic home, not just now but for the future. I would not hesitate to recommend Sarika to any friends or family who are looking to dramatically improve the quality of life they experience in their current or planned living spaces.

I have hired an architectural designer, Gregory Zinkevich for a few projects of a different extent: remodeling of my kitchen, complete remodeling of a studio apartment, and a complete remodeling of a two bedroom apartment in a high regulated NYC apartment building. He is the right professional for the job. Gregory is the architect that transformed our needs and desires into visual concepts and habitable structures. He starts with concept drawings and finishes with construction drawings and documents. Gregory has prepared and submitted an apartment alteration application package and effectively expedited it up until it's complete approval. He does not only provide his architectural services, but also manages and coordinates other parties involved in the project. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is seeking an architectural designer services.

I needed a plumber, an electrician and a carpenter so I hired All-Dessa Construction, a NJ General Contractor, and they provided all the trades. We had a small addition added to the back or the house so my wife could have the kitchen she always wanted. I ha a designer plan the kitchen and they did the construction and installations. The job turned out better than I expected.

I hired Lauren in November 2012 to help design plans for two bathroom remodels in my new home. I had actually already identified an interior designer before meeting Lauren, who came recommended from a respected firm in Portland, but after meeting Lauren, I was so impressed with her aesthetic, work ethic and general friendliness/easy-going-ness that I let the other designer go and hired Lauren instead. Best decision ever! Lauren did an outstanding job designing our first bathroom remodel. On the design front, she took the time to source hundreds of photos of various design elements on Pinterest, from light fixtures, to marble countertops, to paint colors, etc. to help us design our dream bathroom. On the planning front, her architectural degree and her experience with construction made us feel really confident in her work. Her drawings were thorough and she has been able to communicate extremely well with our contractor. In fact, he's become as big a fan of hers as we are. I've also found Lauren to be responsive, responsible and super organized. She's kept our projects moving forward and took a lot of weight off of me as I juggled a newborn and the planning. Lauren's work has been so good that we quickly expanded the scope of her role. She's now helping us furnish the house and is consulting on other small renovation projects. I can't recommend Lauren highly enough!

I needed architectural plans/drawings for my basement for an eventual renovation/refinishing in the near future. Rosa was able to provide them in a timely fashion and at a more than reasonable price. The drawings showcase the space in different scenarios depending on how the basement was to be used. Rosa was also able to pitch in some ideas for the space which I will definitely consider when I'm actually ready to begin work.

My house entered the 21st century after La Renovations remodeled my kitchen, bathroom and half bath. They were professional, always on time and totally reliable and trustworthy. The results were breathtaking. Everyone is impressed with the look. I love my mini spa bathroom and get a huge sense of satisfaction when I work in my kitchen and when family and friends first see it. They listen to your concerns and work towards solving them. They understood when I wanted my bathroom to accommodate my needs. Dyanne worked with me to plan the kitchen space so that it was esthetically beautiful and practical. I wouldn't use anyone else! I highly recommend their services.

            Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

            How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
