I was so stressed out looking for last minute movers and eventually came across Thumbtack. It had me fill out information about my move and said moving companies would eventually reach out to me with quotes. I got disappointed because I figured no one would get back to me the day before New Year’s Eve...but ASAP Movers did and it was within 20 minutes! After seeing the quote, I decided to call...expecting to get disappointed given how last minute it was and because the holiday was coming up. Instead, I got the greatest news! They could come the following morning! It took 3.5 hours for the move (including the 45 minute drive to the new place) and they were so professional! I made sure to save all of their information because I will not be using any other company for my next move! I HIGHLY recommend them!

We moved 800 miles away. I’ve had absolutely awful experiences with moving companies in the past. This wasn’t the case with this team. Everything went off without a hitch. The team was superior in their communication, their efficiency, and their customer service. I would absolutely recommend them and would use them again.

The whole process was seamless and efficient from the beggining. A representative made sure to be available and answer all of my questions, responding promptly and in detail. When move day came, the movers were on time, they made sure to confirm every detail again and began work on the spot. They were fast, careful and honestly the whole experience was impressive. Within 3 hours I was at my new place ready to go. It was all extremely affordable considering what other moving companies were willing to charge. It helped to have everything packed and ready to go, but I would definitely hire them again for my next move.

I found 1st Movers online. Vladimir responded within 30 minutes. This is the most polite professional and timely move I have ever seen in my entire adult life. The previous movers break something or were rude or indifferent. These guys are so polite, fast and honest I am going to use them whenever I move again. From booking with Vladimir, to the pricing details, to reminders, to arriving on time, to packing & moving from two locations (house + storage) within 7 hours, and the guys (Tim, Vlad, Serge), the whole thing was such an awesome experience. Thank u guys.

OUTSTANDING!!! I was lucky enough to find Jeff at the last minute as my move came up very suddenly (the weekend of Labor Day). I did a lot of research and was alarmed by what I read about how moving companies handle you and your stuff. Speaking with Jeff helped to ease my nervousness. We spoke a few times on the phone and via email, he was readily available to discuss any concerns I had. The day of the move they were there before me ready and waiting, got to work immediately and had my stuff packed safely and neatly in the truck in no time. The unloading process proved much the same - again reaching the destination before me and making short order of moving me into my new place. They even put my furniture together! Jeff takes pride in his work and his staff and that shows. To anyone considering hiring him - DO NOT HESITATE - he is worth his weight in gold. If you want a smooth painless process give him a call. Thanks for making my move so very easy!

He and his helper came a little early, moved whatever items we asked him too, also threw a couch for us in the dumpster, put up with our craziness because some stuff we were taking, some we were throwing out and some we were moving so my daughter & I got a little anxious but Adam just smiled and moved items without a problem; very quick too; I would highly recommend.

Peter arrived at the right time ready to tend to my piano. It took him a matter minutes to diagnose the problems it had and he displayed a great knowledge of pianos, which he was keen on educating me with. All in all he did a quality job for a more than reasonable price. Certainly enjoyed doing business with him and look forward to doing so in the future.

I liked moving with Last Minute Moving and Storage. They were very nice and friendly. This was my first time using moving service and if I was moving again I would use this service again. They moved all of my stuff securely and they would help you with from packing, moving to even cleaning but you need to tell them before hand so that they can bring all the packing and cleaning stuff. Also, it's a good service if you don't have much time to plan your move as the name suggests Last minute Moving and Storage. But I feel the move could have been better if they had brought stuff for packing like tape, scissors, padding etc. I felt one of the worker was more active than the other. Also, please have cash handy or zelle app because they don't carry credit card machine.

I was referred to Prestige when I was overwhelmed with my 3 bedroom house move that my husband and I originally planned to do alone. We were so happy that we decided to choose a moving company instead. The owner was very professional with the initial phone call and walk-through. The day of the move, the Prestige moving crew were on time, kind and very professional.

By far the best moving experience I’ve had, and I’ve moved A LOT! Mike and the guys were amazing, staying upbeat the whole move, even when I had three floors, a huge sofa, and so much stuff!! No surly hipster movers here! Got the job done in fantastic time. I’m definitely going to use Mike again for other services he does.

The movers from Clutter are some of the nicest guys around (especially Justin and Jeffrey). As a ny'er I've moved a lot and have used many services for packing/ moving/ delivery - with my fair share of awful to scary experiences (hello craigslist). These guys are friendly, on time and so helpful. They are also a great rate - comparable to other professional moving services and probably less in many cases. As well as, moving they have a storage system that is ideal for the NY lifestyle with pick up and drop off delivery of your items when you need them. So no need to now rent a car to go get your stuff or find a babysitter just so you can go to your storage - it comes to your front door!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
