Mike has done quite a few projects around the house for us starting with a minor repair of our front steps which needed some mortar work to enclosing our porch which was previously only screened in. We asked Mike to give us some ideas and we decided to do a partial enclosure with storm windows. Mike did all the woodwork and framing to make it a 3 season room, installed fan, painted---basically did it all. Quality of work was excellent and mike is a pleasure to work with. if he says he's showing up, he'll be there. more importantly, mike goes above and beyond fixing little things he sees without additional charge. great quality, great price, great guy. in fact, he also helped us in a somewhat emergency situation when we found water leaking behind our kitchen wall. Mike came right over to assess the problem and fixed it in a timely manner. you wont be disappointed

William and A.D.A.D. Construction did a fantastic job painting our porch and patio decks! William was very quick to respond and his crew came out and got the job done in less than 2 days. William not only went out and bought all the paint needed for the job, but also noticed some stairs that were not in great condition and repaired those as well. We would definitely hire them again!

Tom was very prompt and professional. His crew were nice, competent and tidy. His price was appropriate. He communicated in a timely way. Tom was able to assist in design ideas. I hired him for 2 paint jobs and ended up having him return for interior porcelain tiling and a brick porch repair. I highly recommend TNS.

I had two porch polls replaced and they look great! On my end I forgot to leave the decorative pieces and they were not able to be installed. The porch looks fine without them it was just a bummer on my end. I would recommend this company regardless. Great service and for a fair price!

Steve was great! He was helping us hang a porch swing and let us know he would be out on a Saturday (less than a week from when we first connected) then he got back to us and was able to come out a day sooner. Our porch ceiling gave us all some trouble and Steve offered several alternative work around solutions to make sure we were able to get our swing hung without damaging our siding or any of the porch. He made us feel 100% confident in his ability and he was so knowledgable about so many things! We plan to work with him again on various other projects in the future and have already recommended him to others.

Had my wrought iron front porch railing welded and painted. My house is 117 yrs old! It snapped where it was bolted to the cement steps and was dangerous. Had new pieces of iron put in where the legs were, reattached to cement and he painted it for me. Bryan kept in touch since the weather was giving us a hard time. Price was reasonable for what I needed and wanted done. Recommend him and will contact him for future projects

I am very happy with the work done on my house and would recommend All Remodeling without hesitation. We had a big job... new siding, gutters, new front porch, re-framing porch roof and extending the overhang, new columns and railing, (2) new stairs and a installing a new font door with sidelights. They were super courteous and conscientious and always willing to do all those extra little things you don't think of or can foresee. Their pricing is very reasonable and Rick and Manual are an absolute pleasure to work with.

I would like to commend Alex for his responsiveness and workmanship! He was hired to complete work left uncompleted by another contractor. Most contractors are not willing to do this. Due to an error in cabinetry on my end, he was willing to adjust his schedule and come back two laters later (allowing me time to purchase the correct cabinet) and complete the job even though it was my error that caused the delay. On the second day, he installed the correct cabinet and completed additional unfinished work left by the defaulted contractor which was not even in our original agreement. He made suggestions for (and installed) baseboard molding in a sun porch, which my client loved. He also made other suggestions to assist my client with a window seat that she was self-performing. There is still finished carpentry work remaining that needs to be performed towards the end of the project and I will definitely be calling Alex to provide those services!

I initially contacted Shawn for a small job, but after meeting him I and discussing some other bigger projects I was preparing to do, I ended up hiring for all the repair and remodeling work I needed. Shawn and his team replaced the roof, demolished and rebuilt a wrap-around front porch entirely, put in a new paver patio and underground pvc drain pipes, and replaced all the gutters and downspouts. Shawn also built a custom cabinet door in the kitchen. Everything was well done, and any changes or modifications I asked for were done without hesitation. Shawn is an honest and down to earth guy, and is able to handle all types of home remodeling needs. He is always available to answer any questions, and responded to any issues or changes I asked for right away. You feel like you have a friend working with you, and not just a businessman. This shows in the great job Shawn and is team does. I would certainly hire Shawn again for future work.

I received a response from Richard immediately. We set up a time the next morning (because it was already after 5pm when I sent the request through Thumbtack) for him to pick up the window frame, replace the glass, and install the window. He kept me informed along the way because I was at work when he replaced the window (on my front porch). I also needed assistance finding a replacement frame for another window. Although, he didn't have the replacement frame he found a shop that did have what I needed. Richard was very friendly and professional. I would definitely recommend him to a friend and use his company for any future projects.

Hey these guys did a great job repairing my old porch. I didn't think it was salvageable. And the price was very fair. I got other quotes that were $500 to $1,000 higher. that do the right job at a great price

I just had my porch floor replaced yesterday and I can't begin to say enough good things about Xact Build! From the beginning of the project to the end, I was kept informed every step of the way as to what to expect. The quality work that was done was very professional, extremely efficient and attention to detail was evident. They even returned my garden wishing well to it's place! I highly recommend them and will most certainly be a repeat customer!

Cliff Johnson is a master carpenter with a careful eye to detail. He reconstructed our front porch last year and did such a fine job we asked him to tear down our deteriorating, marginal deck and replace it with one using fiber-polymer composite material for the decking. The photo of the underside of the deck is a good example of his craftsmanship.

Bob and his crew did an amazing job on our almost 100 year-old front porch. They removed old wood boards and rails and installed Trex decking, rails and lattice. they finished within two days and hauled all trash away. We are thrilled with Bob's work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
