I enlisted the help of Arbor Tutors to help me with test prep for grad school. Oh man! I am SUPER happy I did that. The tutoring manager walked me through the whole process and set me up with TWO tutors. They also said I could change tutors at any time, but I didn't need to. I was accepted into all of my top choices (Columbia, Penn, Cornell and Duke). I used the application services also (they reviewed my essays).

I've taken all types of GMAT prep courses (online, in-person, etc.) and Dan prepared me better than any of them. Dan was a fantastic tutor and helps you think in different ways. He taught me strategies and approaches that allowed me to beat my goal score. He was incredibly helpful and I would recommend him to anyone trying to improve their GMAT score.

I started working with Kamil late in my college process. Many tutors doubted that I had enough time to prep and were only willing to work with me as a sort of "second hand client". With only two months left before my last possibly act during my senior year, Kamil and I worked day and night to achieve my goal score. Often meeting before and running after midnight only to see each other at six the next day, Kamil and I turned my test scores around to help me get into Cornell University. Kamil is kind, conscientious and committed. For him, standardized testing tutoring is a calling. He is his own brand.

Sasha tutored my Daughter this summer for a college level math course. My daughter has difficulty with math. Sasha was able to keep her interested and make her feel like passing the course was possible if she worked at it. Sasha instilled confidence in my daughter. She was an excellent tutor. My daughter passed the class and felt positive about the experience.

My daughter had the privilege of working with James on her ACT prep these past two months. My daughter who is very bright but struggles with focus and lack of confidence clicked nicely with James. He was extremely timely and easy to schedule with. Our daughter found his sessions to be very engaging and helpful not only with her ACT prep, but also with her regular studies. My daughter set an ACT goal for herself and was extremely surprised and thrilled that she scored beyond her goal. We highly recommend James as an ACT prep tutor!

I went to The Harvard Review for my GMAT Prep. All of my tutoring was done via Skype, as I live on the other side of the country. I took it twice during the time I received tutoring. My first score was with just a few weeks of prep, and I got a 670. I continued to work with Dr. Fikar, and ultimately achieved a score of 760! I would highly recommend him to anybody who wants to get a top score on the GMAT.

My experience with Jon was excellent. He was there for me every step of the way in my LSAT preparation. He was always accessible and accommodating to my scheduling needs. He knows the content of the exam inside and out and has a knack for explaining the material in a way that clicks with students. So glad to have worked with Jon during my prep for the LSAT!

Crimson Scholars absolutely saved me last week while I was cramming for a Calc midterm I was wholly unprepared for. Frank, a Harvard graduate, is a young, whip smart tutor who spent nearly 15 online hours with me within less than 3 days. He was patient with my neurosis, encouraging, and fun. Most importantly, Frank is an incredible teacher. Thank you, Huen and Frank for accommodating me! I will be back in late Nov/Dec for my final... but with a bit more time to prep!

My two junior sons have been using Kim as a tutor since the second half of freshman year. Their grades have gone from B’s to B+’s to now straight A’s! Currently they are working on SAT prep. Kim is extremely organized and adapts her teaching styles to accomadate both boys needs. The boys took their SAT’s for the first time this past Saturday and felt as though they were well prepared and are confident that their scores will be a reflection of time spent working with Kim. It has been worth every penny to have Kim work with our boys on a weekly basis. She is a great teacher and a great person !

My son is in 10th grade and a bright boy. However, with ACT tests coming up, we wanted him to reach his highest potential. Through the Chelsea International Getting Into The Ivys test prep program, my son has excelled so much so that he is up to go to Stanford. After doing 6 weeks of private tuition with Dr. Michelle, her patience, understanding and encouragement, has driven my son’s greatest results. He scored 34 on his first time taking the ACT and he had no prior ACT testing experience. I am so impressed and so thankful for the professional experience of Chelsea International.

My son who is in college was struggling in linear algebra which is an advanced math class. The tutor from Ivy League Tutors was professional and demonstrated true dedication in helping my son to pass a stay in his college program. The owner consistently sent updates and summaries of the tutoring sessions. I highly recommend this company.

Chris was very detailed and responsive throughout the process. He really turned my resume around. My initial resume was great for a job out of college but he was excellent in turning it around now that I had a few years of banking experience. His advice on highlighting experience on deals was excellent. I'd recommend him without hesitation!

Thomas was one of the best tutors I have ever had. After trying a few other SAT tutors, I decided to stick with him. Thomas found different ways to help me understand specific topics and worked with me when I needed extra help. He's constantly researching new tutroing methods and implements them into his sessions. With his help, I was able to increase my SAT score by around 200 points. My parents even signed my sister up for tutoring with Thomas because they saw what an amazing tutor he was. After my SAT process was done, Thomas walked me through the college process and helped me with my essays. Because of him, I am going to college with a full scholarship and I will graduate debt free. Thomas is an amazing tutor and an amazing person. He builds connections with his students and their families that extend outside of the academic sphere. I could not be more grateful to Thomas for all that he has done for me and my family.

You owe it to yourself to utilizes Lisa Tian's knowledge and expertise when it comes to SAT prep. She tailors her "tricks" to fit your needs and unlike the other prep courses she doesn't waste your time, we all need a life. Before I got directed to Lisa I had taken the Sat 3 times and my scores had always been between 1750 and 1850. I took a prep corse from College board before my first test and studied on my own for the other two. Actually I received a 1550 during my first practice test with college board. Honestly, this was an agonizing, laborious, and somewhat depressing experience. I was directed to Lisa by my relatives. I worked with lisa once or twice a week (before the test) from the comfort of my home on Skype. In between classes I would take a practice test which we would discuss in the next meeting. Im not going to lie and say it was fun, lets be real its SAT prep, but it was effective and efficient. Lisa is a wonderful teacher who creates a comical yet intense atmosphere where you learn quickly. After working with LIsa I scored a 700 in reading, a 680 in math, and a 770 in writing(10 on the essay). Im no great scholar and at the time I was also on the varsity crew team and in my high school's marching band. There are people who excell at taking the SAT, and then there's the rest of us. If you want to trick colleges into thinking you are one of those people, Lisa Tian is the way to go.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

  • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
  • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
  • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
  • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
