Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who do you hire to paint cabinets?

A professional cabinet painter knows exactly what to do to give your cabinets long-lasting color and appeal. Other painters may also specialize in cabinet painting. You can find a highly rated, professional cabinet painter near you by searching online. Look at their online reviews and ratings from customers, as well as photos of recently painted cabinets that showcase the pro’s work.

What does it cost to have kitchen cabinets painted?

The average cost to have your kitchen cabinets painted by a professional ranges from $1,200 to $7,000. However, the layout of your cabinets can affect the complexity of the job and increase the cost. Your costs might also vary depending on how many kitchen cabinets need to be painted. And, some cabinet painters may charge extra if they have to remove the doors to paint them.

Contact a few cabinet painters in your area to get a better idea of how much it will cost to paint your kitchen cabinets. Also, read the cost guide for kitchen cabinet painting to learn more about how prices are determined.

Is it cheaper to paint or replace kitchen cabinets?

This depends on your project. Although painting kitchen cabinets is usually significantly cheaper than replacing them, it’s important to look at long-term costs vs. benefits. If your cabinets are damaged from water leaks, mold or warping and can no longer open or close properly, painting them is probably not the best option. You may spend less, but if you have to replace them in the next few years, you will wind up paying far more for having painted them.

What's the most durable paint for kitchen cabinets?

The most durable type of paint for kitchen cabinets is anything that’s smooth and easy to clean. It’s often recommended that you choose semi-gloss, gloss or satin finishes as opposed to matte finishes. Matte finishes have a non-uniform surface, which not only attracts dust and grease, but also makes it more vulnerable to damage during wipe downs.

Don’t hesitate to ask a top-rated cabinet painter for their advice as you’re planning your project.

So, while they were very polite we did not get quality work or attention to detail. I specifically asked if they were hand panting or airbrushing so I could order the right paint. They said hand painting but they airbrushed. There was a drawer front put on backwards. Flipped it around to find that they didn’t paint one side, I’m guessing because you wouldn’t typically see that side because it’s against a wall...but since that was the wrong side you can now see it. Additionally, short cuts like this should make anyone wary. My cabinets were painted in August (8 months ago). Almost every single cabinet has missing or chipped paint. We bought high quality paint from Sherwin Williams. I’ve had a couple painters and a handyman come by since then, and they’ve all said this happens when the cabinets aren’t prepped (sanded) properly. While the price was good, that doesn’t really matter because I’m going to have to pay to have it done again. They looked so good at first and we switched from brown to white and gray that I was just so happy with the look. Now that we’ve lived with them for 8 months I’m just so upset about it.

We had a horrible experience. They were never fully staffed, never on time and made many promises of which none of them were fulfilled. The two week job took two months and is still not right. My husband is having to go through and remove screws that were used which are for metal that they drilled into the cabinets. The worse part about that is they were told this a month ago when they brought the cabinets back and were reinstalling them that those screws were not wood screws and should not be used. They apparently lost all l the screws that came with our cabinets , which shows the disorganization. They scratched my stainless steel double ovens, stove top and my stainless steel microwave and refrigerator both have overspray on them. My contract was for my entire kitchen to be sprayed, however that also wasn't done. They sprayed but then said they had problems with the sprayer and thats why the paint wasn't adhering and ultimately ended up hand painting everything. They did NOT do the prep required so that the paint could adhere. The list truly goes on and on. I felt I needed to put this out here only because I had chosen the top three painters with the most favorable reviews to get quotes from and had I read something like this I never would have worked with them. I am posting the pictures of what it looked like when they were reinstalling them, which we made them take back and redo. They do look better now, however there has been so much sanding the textures on the doors are very different and have lost all the wood grain. I obviously didn't pay the contract amount either which they agreed to, we came to what I think was a very generous amount considering my husband now is removing all the doors and reinstalling with the proper screws and hardware. I do want to say Greg was a very hard worker and never complained when we had issues with the work, he would fix it to the best of his ability to make it right but Channa made too many promises she couldn't keep.
