Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a wedding planner?

A wedding planner is a professional service provider whose job it is to organize and execute all the details of a couple’s wedding. A wedding planner can be contracted at any stage in the wedding planning process to help to any degree the couple is willing to pay for. Wedding planning is similar to event planning in that a planning team handles the coordination of multiple wedding elements including catering, venue, guests, entertainment, decor, transportation and more. Anyone who has ever been involved in a wedding can confirm that wedding planning is hard work. Experience brings wisdom when it comes to avoiding or resolving day-of challenges. There is no legal regulatory body that oversees or certifies wedding planning as an industry. Anyone who chooses can call themselves a wedding planner. When looking for a wedding planner, be sure to read reviews, and make smart hiring decisions by asking about licenses and insurance.

How much does a wedding planner cost per hour?

On average, wedding planners charge $80 for their services. However, rates can range from roughly $50 per hour to $100 per hour, or even more than $300 per hour.

To find out how much it will cost to hire a wedding planner, request cost estimates from a few in your area. Also, keep in mind that some wedding planners may have flat fees instead of hourly rates.

How much does it cost for a wedding planner?

Wedding planning is a full-time job — unless you hire a professional to handle the hard work for you. The cost for a wedding planner will depend on the level of service you desire. The least expensive wedding planner option is day-of coordination, then partial service, then full-service.

The national average cost for wedding planning is between $990 and $1,300. Costs are greatly affected by region, with rural or smaller-town wedding planners often far more affordable than planners in higher-cost cities. Here are some examples of the various levels of wedding planning and their potential average costs:

  • Day-of-wedding coordination: $800-$1,700. Day-of services can include the planner finalizing all details, creating a timeline, confirming vendors and overseeing all setup, day-of activities, and cleanup. The couple does all the front-end planning and contracts all the vendors. Time commitment could be about 15-25 hours, depending on pricing.
  • Partial service: $1,500-$3,800. Here the planner works with the couple from the beginning, helping contract vendors, creating a timeline, and overseeing all details of day-of execution. Time commitment could be about 30-60 hours, depending on package and pricing.
  • Full service: $3,500-$8,000 or more. Here the professional handles all wedding and planning details including working on design, securing rentals, getting the venue and vendors, and handling complete execution of the event. Time commitment could be 50-150 hours or more, depending on package and pricing.
  • Consulting: $50-$150 per hour for design, vendor, reception and other wedding planning consultation.

What does a wedding coordinator do?

A wedding coordinator is involved in the wedding planning process, but some coordinators focus on the day-of activities and schedule. These professionals are sometimes referred to as “day-of wedding coordinators.” They make sure your wedding starts on time, the vendors are there and everything runs smoothly. Essentially, they are your point person. And they can help minimize the stress (and jitters) brides and grooms may experience when throwing a wedding.

Is a wedding planner worth the cost?

Hiring a wedding planner can be worth the cost if you want to minimize your stress and save yourself time. Let’s be real — planning a wedding is a lot of work. You have to figure out a budget, shop around for vendors (DJs, bands, florists, caterers, chefs, photographers, videographers, etc.), negotiate contracts, book appointments and so much more.

If you’re not interested in planning a wedding all on your own, consider hiring a wedding planner — especially if you have the budget.

What do wedding planners do?

Wedding planners do exactly what their job titles indicate — they plan your entire wedding and handle the logistics. For example, they will:

  • Identify the best DJs, caterers, florists, photographers and other vendors for your wedding.
  • Help negotiate and set up contracts with your vendors.
  • Keep track of your budget and spending.
  • Make sure that everything runs smoothly on your wedding day.

In some cases, you might need to hire a separate wedding designer to handle the styling services or a wedding coordinator to oversee the schedule and activities the day of your wedding.

Our wedding was so lovely and we couldn't be more than happier. We had a reception in our backyard and we hired them for being an assistant of the day of our wedding. Cynthia and Dallas are very nice and friendly; and also good with communication via phone, emails and texts. They are very responsive to the clients and gave us many advices in our wedding. We would like to thank you very much for everything. Decorations (tables, lights, and cake set up) were beautiful; Food, photographers, bartender, server, and everything ran smoothly and perfectly. Not only us, but our guests are also enjoy our wedding. If you are looking for a wedding coordinator/planner for your wedding or the day of wedding, I recommend Affairs to Remember Weddings and Special Events and you would not be disappointed. Thank you both of you again. Janey and Bob Cunningham ❤

I hired Jessica to be my day-of wedding coordinator/planner for my destination wedding in Las Vegas, and boy did she go above and beyond. I seriously can't believe how much she did for me during the planning process, even though I didn't hire or pay her for it. She is definitely meant to be a wedding planner, and that is coming from someone who is very picky and expects a lot when it comes to these sort of things since I am a perfectionist when it comes to party planning. She would get back to me super fast when I had a question or concern, and I had TONS. A few days before the wedding, I had a couple things that were sort of thrown into the mix and made me panic, but one phone call from her, and all was figured out and I was put to ease. She made my wedding the wedding of my dreams and also made it the best wedding a lot of my guests said they have ever been to! I just can't thank her enough for everything. I'm going to miss planning my wedding with her because she made it so much fun for me. I wish she lived in Ohio so she could help me plan every party I throw! If you want to have a wedding that you and your guests will remember (in a good way) for the rest of your lives, hire Jess! You will be so happy that you did, I promise!

We hired Pro Party Planners for our wedding planning, coordination, and decorating services and truly could not have asked for a better, more positive, or more seamless experience. Leading up to our wedding, Tiffany was very diligent and consistent in following up with planning items to make sure everything was on track for our big day. Pro Party Planners also recommended some great vendors whom we also ended up hiring for our event. Tiffany coordinated and planned everything with all of our vendors which gave us the freedom to focus on other things and gave us peace of mind. Wedding planning is stressful, so this was a huge help! Finally, Tiffany truly knows her stuff when it comes to decorating. My husband and I were astounded by how terrific everything looked on wedding day. You could tell the amount of time and thought that went into every aspect of the decorating and it honestly couldn’t have looked any better. We were getting compliments from our guests on the centerpieces all night! Tiffany was cognizant and mindful of our budget and was able to keep all of the decorating within a price point we felt comfortable with while also keeping everything consistent with our vision and looking elegant/beautiful. Personally, Tiffany was such a kind, caring, and attentive person and you can tell she truly cares about her work and making everything perfect for her clients. We could not recommend Pro Party Planners more and hope to use them again in the future. We truly could not have pulled off our big day with out them.

My experience with Elena was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. I felt scammed. I was initially told she would be there at the wedding along with someone else. I later found out that she wasn't going to be present. She had to hire her own assistant. My spouse and I found all of our own vendors which was Elena's job. Elena isn't from Las Vegas where our wedding was taking place. She assured me she would be able to get vendors from someone that was from vegas. She knew it was a destination wedding and we wanted to be on a budget. The few vendors she sent me were way over budget and their work sucked. I asked her a few questions about different things like where can I find this or that (shirts or bow ties). which any wedding planner should know or something I could have asked my friend. She swears she did a lot. I told her I didn't like rustic or vintage every inspirational photo was vintage or rustic. I felt like our wedding day was going to be a disaster. I was told one thing then later it was something else. She would promise me things that she volunteered her assistant to do. Then her assistant would disagree so she would say oh we no longer can do this or that. I said you mentioned it not me. Then it was well you didn't pay for this. Basically I was lied to. I specifically said everything I needed initially and then later it was oh we didn't agree to this. Yes you did bc that's what I needed. I felt scammed because Elena call me and SHE cancelled on us a few months prior to the wedding. I DIDN'T GET A REFUND. That's wrong. You cancelled on me. She also told me this shortly after I found out my aunt passed away. She was aware my aunt wasn't doing well. She is super inconsiderate. She didn't do her job and the few recommendations she sent like try khols or Macy's etc she felt was enough to keep my money. It WASN'T. I should have known it wouldn't have worked from the consultation. She came across as everything had to be the way she suggested it. She was like trust me to make your dreams come true. I couldn't trust her at all bc everything she sent me wasn't my style. I wouldn't have worked with her even if it was free. It actually worked out in the end bc we found a wedding planner who truly made our dreams come true. I DO NOT recommend this company at all. Fyi there was no verbal abuse what so ever. They just wasn't happy with the fact that I said that I think my wedding will be a disaster. I never raised my voice..cursed.. or threatened them. I just simply said my wife and I simply wasn't happy with the service and I felt the wedding would have been a disaster. I was lied to on several occasions as well. I just definitely wouldn't recommend it regardless of the amount of money. They aren't worth $5..

Maybe it was just us or maybe it was timing. I don't know. I just know we had to instigate everything. My fiance and I have opposite schedules so when it comes to communicating, we need multiple ways to communicate. Email I thought was okay, but then texting was next, but ultimately, lastly, (too late), phone calls were the best way to get a hold of her... Maybe, so she said. Then it's be weeks til we heard anything from her. I thought having a wedding planner was supposed to make things easier but she made it more difficult. I was trying to plan and out of city wedding and she signed up for it. She couldn't make it to any of the visits when we were looking for venues, granted she was sick, but she told us on the day of, 2 hrs away from arriving... what?! We were driving there separately, but my fiance and I paid for her hotel room for the nights we were there. Then the next city, I looked up all the resorts and venues myself. When trying to plan the dates because of flights and whatnot, we received no response. We never heard from her again, actually. I just told my fiance to make sure we weren't charged for the rest of payment when she did nothing and we saw her only once. I heard and read great things, but she ultimately failed me for someone that has SO MUCH history with event planning and photography.

We hired Cynthia after meeting with her and seeing all of the good reviews on Thumbtack. However, after hiring her she cancelled two of our meetings the day of. After we met with her on the third attempt, we tried emailing her with questions to which the second email she did not respond. After a month we resent the email and attempted to call her. It was another week before we received a response that said she was sorry she thought she had responded to the first email and that she waited another week after she got the second email because it was the busiest week of the year for her. We sent followup stating our hesitation to continue using her services. It has now been over a month and a half and we have yet to receive any communication from her. We sent her an email this week stating we are cancelling our services with her and still have not received any response. The contract stated we get our deposit back in full (minus $200) if we cancel however our deposit was only a few dollars more than that. We never thought we would need to cancel but now that we have we are out $200 without getting any services. We are disappointed and afraid to try again with another planner so we'll be handling all the details of our wedding ourselves.
