Helen was professional and very pleasant! She stayed our entire reception to ensure that everyone was satisfied. I received compliments from several people about how delicious the food was. I will use Helen again for any catering services and recommend her to my friends and family. In addition to providing great food, Helen spent a lot of time talking to me about what I wanted, recommending food choices based on my needs, and double checking that we were in agreement before our event. Thank you Helen for your part in making my wedding reception a great memory!!!

I had a 30th birthday party for my boyfriend and had Chris come over for the food! The food was phenomenal. The best tacos I have ever had and I everyone at the party would say the same thing. Chris & his helper were so nice and friendly as well. All my friends and family kept asking for Chris' information so they could us him also. I will definitely be using them again for further parties!

For the last few years, the College of Southern Nevada has hired the wonderful and dependable Elite Catering for many different student related events. In every instance, Elite Catering has served mouth watering dishes while maintaining an authentic-related-food genre of dishes. As a diversified college, our student events are customized to serve many different students who attend the college from foreign countries. As a result, we often require unusual dishes to meet the many different cultures we work with at the college and Elite Catering has always come through! Elite Catering does a wonderful job when customizing chosen menu items. Over the years, the college has enjoyed the many delicious meals Elite Catering prepares while also providing personal assistance to ensure the meals are served hot and fresh. There has never been a time that Elite Catering has declined to prepare our chosen event meals, regardless of the culturally diverse menus we have requested over the years. In addition to their tasty, fresh and healthy meals, Elite Catering is always on time and ready to provide the most professional service to our students, administration and community. Personally, I hired Elite Catering to cater my wedding and was extremely pleased with the unique dishes they served; both hot and cold. I highly recommend Elite Catering for all your catering needs. Thank you, Chef Robert for all the delicious meals you have prepared for us over the years. Keep up the great work!!! Nora Mirabal

Meats and treats did an amazing job catering our wedding reception!! They brought everything we needed. They came and set up all of the food for us. Food was absolutely amazing!! Cupcakes were phenomenal. Brisket and pork were cooked to perfection. I highly recommend the Apple slaw as well! All in all I could not have picked a better company to do business with. Absolutely no disappointments in the process of booking or food.

The breakfast food was fresh and prepared properly. The presentation of the fresh fruit tray and the fish plate was extremely eye catching and very professionally presented. The delivery was timely. The Attendant took care of set up. He was pleasant and attentive to his work. Finally, the price was very reasonable for what we received for 30 people. I will use GG's Gourmet Catering again. I am completely satisfied with my first experience with this Caterer.

I can’t imagine working with a better caterer than Lisa Marie’s Catering. Stay with me here for a minute as I have a lot to say about Lisa and her team. First of all, she’s wonderful to work with, accommodating, punctual and easy to communicate with, plus her food is nothing short of fantastic. I work with caterers around the country as I bounce around hosting events for a national company. Because I plan everything from the West Coast, I need accessible vendors I can count on even if I’m hundreds or thousands of miles from them. Not only is Lisa a true professional, but she also has the patience of a saint. When I was waiting months for a venue to confirm my event date, Lisa worked with me, putting my mind at ease and holding my event date. When I asked her the same questions three times, just to be sure, she confirmed and assured me everything was taken care of – and it was. Her bar manager, Mark, texted me the evening before my party for 200 to ensure all details were taken care of and offering services the morning event if necessary. Even with all of this above-and-beyond customer service, I wasn’t prepared for the day of the event. One of their team members arrived early, quite early. Instead of sitting around and waiting for his team, seeing me setting up, moving tables, etc., he jumped right in and helped until his co-workers arrived and it was time for him to “work.” Everyone involved was all smiles, friendly and efficient. As the event started, I was treated like a guest with both Lisa and Mark checking on me, offering drinks and food. I chose an eclectic mix: ahi tuna bites, antipasta skewers, petite BBQ pork and slaw sandwiches, various crostini and more. Of course, her team’s handcrafted margaritas were a huge hit. Actually, everything was a hit! Although I can’t say enough good things about Lisa Marie’s Catering and every, single person I worked with, I have to get back to work!

Roxanne was wonderful! Initial planning emails: Wonderful and friendly! Roxanne was so good at reassuring me and guiding me. I had no idea what I needed, and she helped me decide on what would fit my small reception best. Payment: I totally messed up my method of payment and made Roxanne have to wait past the final deadline for her money. She was so patient and gracious about it. We checked in with each other via email until the issue was resolved. Day of: Roxanne let me know what information she needed to properly deliver the food and supplies several days before my event. She was on time, prompt with set up, gave a clear explanation of what went with what. She gave me a much-needed hug before the wedding started. Food: Every single thing was delicious. We had Caprese salad cups, Veggie eggrolls, Stuffed mushrooms, Olive bread, and Shrimp cocktail. I originally asked for enough for 35, but then asked if I ought to over order for 40 just in case. She was very reassuring and promised there would be enough for 40. All my guests very honestly told me they loved the food and that they thought it was a good amount for such a short gathering of about 2.5 hours. The Olive bread really was excellent, and the Caprese salad cups were super tasty! The egg rolls disappeared quickly! Presentation and set up: As promised, the chaffing dishes kept the food just right. Even the stuffed mushrooms which would have been ideally been kept warm in the oven were perfectly fine in the chaffing dish. We had to add some extra ice to the shrimp, but that was literally the only thing we had to attend to. Everything else was set up properly. Plenty of utensils, plates, napkins, serving spoons, etc. Clean up was a breeze. Everything left behind was disposable. Price: I will be honest, I have no idea what catering costs. I've never catered anything before that didn't involve the words "sub sandwich tray." But Roxanne had the kinds of food and service we wanted for the price we were willing to pay. So I have no complaints. :D Overall: Though I don't anticipate having another event that needs catering, I would absolutely use Say Goodnight Gracie catering again! And I would recommend her to any friend who needed catering, large or small.

During the USA Sevens international rugby tournament last week, we had dinner for 36 hungry rugby players and families and Carmine's did not disappoint. The dinner was on Valentine's Day (Saturday night, 2/14/15) and Carmine's had a full house at their relatively new restaurant in Caesar's Palace and the catering staff had to stay at Caesar's to help with the workload, so Stephanie Detwiler (catering manager) brought all of the food out to our hotel by herself and set everything up for us. The choices were wide and each course we had was spectacular. Nobody left hungry but everyone left happy!!! Bob Klingensmith

Tia bartended our Spring wedding. She did a great job of keeping the bar running smoothly and generally keeping tabs on the servers we had hired. She also helped with the clean up. She was very helpful before the event as well, willing to take the time to answer questions and provide suggestions based on her extensive experience as a wedding planner (we had not hired her as a wedding planner, but I can tell that she would have been great at it if we had). If you have an need for her services, she will be a great benefit to whatever event you are organizing.

We recently had Kaffe Live cater our 50 person work event. From the veggie tacos to wraps to the Mexican sliders everything was so delicious. There were many appetizers to choose from, beverages and New York cheese cake that was topped with raspberry sauce! The food was delivered on time and still hot, fresh and ready to serve. I received compliments the whole night on how great the food was so we will definitely be ordering from this Kaffe again soon! Oh and the salads were so yummy!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
