They somehow, amazingly, took two garage bays worth of trash from a home renovation, including doors and trim and everything else you can think of, out of my garage and put it into one pick up truck. It was worth every penny. Amazing job, friendly, professional service. I would use them again in a heartbeat. Thank you!

Let me tell you in was a total pleasure dealing with Gaitan's Drywall. We are in the process of remodeling our bathroom and needed new Sheetrock and Green Board installed. Moises and company did a superb job during the instatllation and texturing process. Every time I needed to call the company Flor was so responsive with returning all messages. I plan on two more remodels and will definitely use this fine company again. Their prices are extremely reasonable and they are a truly professional business.

I would highly recommend Diego and DiSalvo Services. They recently provided significant upgrades to my home - painting, granite countertops, really nice laminate flooring, and carpeting. Diego does what he says he's going to do, period, which was highly satisfying. He even did several nice touches around the house that I was not expecting. I would highly recommend Diego!

I am so blessed to have found Ruben Martinez and his son Adam! Ruben was the first to reply and within the hour came and gave me a bid...less than 24 hours my project was complete and is absolutely gorgeous!!! I would give them 10 stars if allowed! They were so fairly priced, professional and just nice down-to-earth people! I have already started recommending them to my friends....and making a list of future home improvement projects!

We were looking for someone who would be able to help us finish our final touches of our home that we renovated. Paint colors and any miscellaneous pieces we were missing to put the finishing decor in our home. Jenae not only came to our home, she asked questions, looked around to see what our tastes were in terms of our 'style' - she not only nailed the colors for our new home but picked the same colors we had in our home on the east coast (she had no clue)! This just shows you, she gets to know you as a person and pays attention. She served as the project manager for the paint crew; went shopping with us to find the right pieces (that was exhausting) and she said nothing but encourage words - and we were so successful during our shopping trip, our items are sitting ever so peaceful in our home. We are now looking to install barn wood on a wall and she is going above and beyond to find the right people; showroom and made us an appointment. Jenae introduced us to another professional who makes custom curtains (by the way is very professional and knows her stuff) - helped pick the right fabric and color - listened to what I had to say which allowed me to think outside my comfort zone as well as feel comfortable with the selection we made. Can't wait to they get installed. Thank you Jenae - :)

Tim did a truly professional job. I had a broken water main leading from the street into my home due to tree roots. Tim gave me an estimate, set a time to due the job, showed up when he said he would and completed it in a matter of hours. He called me out to see the repairs he made before filling in the hole that he had to dig to get to the main water pipe. He used Quality Materials and then packed sand around the new pipe removing large rocks and debris from the area to prevent future damage. Oh, I forgot to mention that the location of the break in the water main was under the sidewalk leading from the shut off into my home. Great work, fantastic estimate, and as I mentioned before a "Truly Professional job." I highly recommend him for your project.

Orlando Jr. was great to work with. He met me for an estimate on my time, which was very convenient. He communicated with me every step of the way. The estimate was more than fair. I am thrilled with the work they did painting my home interior. I will use them again for remodels and I highly recommend them.

Anthony came to my house, gave me a great price, and actually knew what he was talking about. He also gave great advice on colors and types of paint. We talked to other companies and shopped around a bit. Discount Painting wins, hands down. My painters just left. Anthony told us 2-3 days. They finished in less than 2 days. They showed up on time, were professional and did everything for us. They moved furniture, prepped and painted our entire downstairs area. The living room, dining room, kitchen, hallway, and vaulted stairwell. We really like the job they did and have already hired them for a much larger project at my parents house. I will definitely be keeping Anthony's number and using it again. I would strongly recommend anyone having painting done to at least get an estimate from Anthony. This was a really great experience!

The best thing I can say about Diverse Decors is the attitude, which was very good. The second thing was listing to my ideas and understanding my budget. Very professional with a warm touch and the work was completed to my satisfaction. I would recommend Diverse Decors to anyone who is looking to make their home feel more like home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
