I have had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Karen Wieland since 2013. We worked as colleagues for two years in a university graduate literacy program. Under her mentorship as my department Chair, I grew in my knowledge of preparing future reading specialists/coaches to work in schools. I was privy to the great work that Karen did with our graduate literacy candidates in their clinical practicum course. She led students in their work with multiple children who were clients for the Reading Center that Karen ran. Karen’s knowledge of diagnostic assessment and remediation allowed our graduate literacy candidates to be well-prepared and competitive in the job market. Karen and I both spent time working with adult learners in a community literacy program and her knowledge of assessment and remediation for reading difficulties proved invaluable in that context as well. Karen and I have also worked collaboratively on multiple scholarly pursuits. Together, we obtained three research grants, which allow us to study the outcomes of different aspects of our work with graduate literacy students. Although we no longer work together, Karen and I have maintained close collegial ties as we work together in thinking about pedagogy, curriculum, and research. Karen’s deep knowledge of scholarship in literacy and teacher education more broadly are essential as we work toward preparing manuscripts for publication and presentations at conferences. Whether working with younger “kiddos” or young adult or adult learners, developing courses or curriculum, or working on scholarship for publication, Karen puts her all into every task she undertakes. Karen comes with my highest of recommendations.

E.B. Howard Consulting is worth every penny. They were able to locate funding for my start-up and helped with crafting a high-quality grant proposal that was funded. If you want professionals and you want to get funded... this is the consulting firm you need to be working with. Don't waste time with anyone else.

I write a column several times a week about a wide range of wellness and science issues. Recent topics: neuroscience, evolution, healthy cooking recipes, sports medicine. Company statistics show that for over the past year, my column averages over 5 times the readership of the average of the Buffalo columns. I also write professionally elsewhere.

Offering professional writing and editing services across a multitude of formats, styles, and subjects. I am available for articles, editorials, interviews, fiction and more. Print, internet, film/stage, and alternative medias are all welcomed. Ghostwriting and consulting services are also available. Whether it be a serious research paper or comedic prose, I can meet your desired tone and deliver to your deadline.

I've made kids giggle when they visit the toy aisle. And made Moms thirsty for a particular brand of juice. I've motivated teenagers to take on an assignment they didn't have to do. Turned serious food bloggers into raving brand enthusiasts. And encouraged 20-something guys to change their facial hair in order to meet more women. In all, I get people consumers, shoppers, decision makers and influencers engaged with brands. It's not all fun and games. It's really more about selling products. Using a rat to sell fancy French cheese, we drove a 12% increase in sales. Targeting new moms with a birthday promotion, we delivered $6 million in incremental sales. So if that's the kind of writer you're looking for some one who can get the facts right, but also connect on a personal level let me quote your project.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
