My wife and I couldn't be happier with the kitchen back-splash Chris installed for us! It was the icing on the cake for our kitchen remodel project! He does outstanding work paying close attention to detail. He was able to complete the job on time, on budget and was easy to work with. We're already planning more tile work, this time in our bathroom. Thanks again Chris!

Chris and TJ did a phenomenal job remodeling our half bath. Professional, down to earth and reasonable. Gave us exactly what we asked for and more. This was a last minute job due to a leak and they made time for us. I'd recommend them to anyone and will definitely be using them again in the very near future!

MJP const added on a mudroom, remodeled a bathroom and 2 bedrooms (one a nursery) for us. He was on time, very professional and made some great suggestions that made our remodels better than we expected. The quality of his work was exceptional and his prices were reasonable for the quality. He is the only guy we will call for all of our projects.

I was in need of multiple book cases for a home library/office, some of which needed to be customized to work around an access door for bathroom plumbing and electrical boxes. I had a very specific concept in mind. I found Barnum Home Pros by going online and discovering Thumbtack. Randy Barnum was very attentive and was able to meet my requirements! Barnum Home Pros also suggested several additional ideas I had not thought of but liked and ended up using. He answered e-mails, returned phone calls and visited my home several times to get the work order and measurements right and show a sample. I was very pleased with his dependability, work ethic and quality craftsmanship. Even more surprising to me was how fast he was able to get this job done. I thought I would have to wait months but it was less than a month. I will be needing a few more book cases and my wife wants to re-do her kitchen. We already plan to call Barnum Home Pros back!

I had the pleasure of doing business with Daren on a bathroom remodel. He was very thorough in his explanation of what needed to be done and why. I had a few contractors that I met with for this job and I have to say that Daren made me feel the most comfortable & confident. Not to mention his impeccable work at an affordable price!!!!! He is definitely my go to guy from now on.

Stop reading reviews - You've found your new favorite forever construction company. Craig and his crew COULD NOT have been more responsive, polite, thoughtful, hard-working, or considerate (and handsome to boot!). We're renovating our backyard this summer, and fell in love with the idea of a horizontal fence. We interviewed handfuls of companies, and every single one was hard to schedule and disgruntled. Enter Craig. He arrived super punctually, listened carefully to everything we were looking for, took time to ask us questions, and returned a comprehensive quote--that clearly outlined all of the costs and his thinking--to us promptly. It was easy to schedule a time for the build, and he showed up right on time. Within a day, all of the posts were up, and the next day the fence was finished. He followed up asking if we had any questions, or comments, and we talked through tiny details, which he came back and perfected immediately. We've already hired him to deliver and grade the soil for the new backyard, and we're brainstorming the project after that. The only thing I'm sad about is that he and his crew never let us buy them lunch or give them refreshments while they worked. Go with CNG!! You will not be disappointed.

Radiant Mechanical installed a toe kick heater in my kitchen cabinet. The work was performed by Derek. He was very professional and willing to answer our questions as the job progressed. The work was completed in the estimated time frame and everything was cleaned up before they left. During the service call they heard an unusual sound coming from my boiler. They diagnosed the problem as a dirty burner. They performed an additional service of cleaning my boiler while they were here saving me the need for an additional service call. I would definitely recommend Radiant Mechanical to my friends and family.

I have had Thompson's Property Services do a couple of jobs for me. I had wood flooring put down on my family room and it looks gorgeous! Also, had a deck refurbished. Both jobs were done in a professional and timely manner. I have also referred Thompson's Property Services for kitchen counter and tile replacement. The outcome was outstanding! I would highly recommend Thompson's Property Services for all your home improvements.

Cabinet Interiors is the only company/team that I ever want to handle any remodel project for me. Not only are they as good as Chip and Joanna, they - the 2 of them - handle all aspects of a remodel(I'm talking electric, moving vents, fixing builder errors such as unlevel floors, tile, painting & recommend color/style, design/architect)... just unbelievable work and artists in their trade! They have handled 3 projects for me; one was a whole house remodel, including gutting a kitchen and installing all new cabinets, floors, tearing out a wall, and much more. They have also completely remodeled an oceanfront condo; which sold almost as soon as they were completed with the work. The buyers said that they wanted the unit EXACTLY as it was shown and purchased it as their personal 2nd home! The last project was a kitchen remodel in a very old home; which presented them with MANY builder challenges. I am grateful to know Jeff & Colean and fortunate that a previous client recommended them to me. Lastly, and very important, their work is quality, they are honest, fair, flexible and custom builders.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
