We wish we could say this was an awesome experience, but it definitely had some difficulties. Garrett sent 4 movers and a 28-foot box truck for our move. We were moving an entire household from 3 storage units and some additional stops for other items. The crew arrived about 45 minutes late (we were not charged for the time) to the storage facility. The load in went fine. The first unload seemed to take longer than what we thought was reasonable with 4 guys. We had some concerns regarding the crew (i.e. complaining, slowness, etc.). We called Garrett, who called the crew and the concerns were addressed. Garrett was very apologetic. The second trip went smoother – also noting this was after Garrett spoke with the guys. We also had some issues with fragile items being broken. We again spoke with Garrett. While it was not covered under his insurance, we worked to come up with a reasonable and amicable solution. The move was “scheduled” to take about 6-8 hours; the crew was here for about 12 hours. The quote and agreement we had with Garrett was an hourly rate, so it cost us much more than we planned on. Because of the time it took, we also have things we will have to move ourselves. They also did not assemble furniture. Besides what seems like many negative aspects – there were also positives. The guys moved a large, heavy wood-stove out of the house for us. They were personable, polite and careful. Garrett was attentive and understanding. He did what he could from a distance to make things right and easier for us.

I hired John Marrone to help with a small, local household move. I packed and moved most of my belongings myself and needed his help to move the furniture and heaviest boxes. He had a delay arriving, but called me well in advance and stayed in touch until he arrived. I had plenty of packing and cleaning to do in the meantime. He arrived with one helper. The loading went smoothly and quickly. He offered to load items that I had planned to put in my car, which was very helpful for me. The unloading on the other end was equally uneventful. They even set up one of the beds. I would definitely recommend John Marrone for moving. He was friendly and efficient. I chose his service because he was one of the few independent movers who could provide the truck as well as the service. I will call him next time I need to move.

We relocated from Elmira to Wisconsin and didn't have a chance to really clean our home prior to placing it on the market. Once the movers were gone, so were our vacuum and steam mop, which made giving it a final deep clean next to impossible. Erin got the place sparkling and the pictures look great.

The movers were professional, courteous, and fast about their work. One of the movers, Don, made it his mission to clean up as he went. I would definitely go with this company again! !

Ti Trifecta Moving was absolutely amazing!! We had a difficult real estate transaction and hired them in June and were unable to give them a schedule and plan of action until the night before we moved at 6pm. We just moved on August 3-4th. Our lives were very stressful, but they were the least stressful part of the deal. Korrina their communications director was phenomenal to deal with and an absolute pleasure! There were four movers that broke down our beds, moved the contents of our house, unloaded the truck and put our beds back together. Each of them was so pleasant and professional, it was so hot and humid and they were polite and never complained once! We also hired them to clean, in a perfect world the cleaning would have happened prior to unloading so the cleaner could have free reign. This was not the case with us, the cleaner cleaned while the movers unloaded- I gave her my top priority and she was great and did what I asked her to do. She was polite and friendly. They are a gem among moving companies and I would use them again in a heartbeat.

I was completely impressed with the two young men from Elephant Movers; they were on time, worked effiiciently and placed the items on the truck for me in a very secure manner. I had 125 miles to travel and did not want the worry of items 'falling all over the place'. And all at an inexpensive cost. Thank you, Eric and Graydon ... you did an excellent job! If I EVER need to move again, I will think of you guys. Best, Terry

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.
