Awesome in every way possible! Margaret quoted a precise price and responded immediately to another question I had regarding time. Within 24 hours of the quote, my article was returned with perfection! I have already referred a colleague to her for editing. I look forward to developing a writer/editor relationship with Margaret. I highly recommend her, you will not be disappointed!

The project was to find a professional resume writer who could create a resume and cover letter for a retiree with 25+ years of experience to apply for an administrative part-time position. I believe the comments below speak for themselves. First reaction, "WOW”. I really wasn't too optimistic that she would be able to take what I provided her and craft it in such a way to get so much information into 1 page. Of course my expectation was an improvement over what I provided, but she really took it to another level; I was amazed! To have someone who truly understands ... respects my feelings is absolutely priceless. I guess the best way I can say this, is the professionalism, sincerity and genuine commitment to my project is something we all as consumers wish we could experience with any company we do business with! Well done!" Thank you so much for a job “Well done”!

A skilled writer, he responded quickly and provided service on the same day. Prof. Gerace helped me make my writing tighter and more succinct, and to clarify jargon that might not be obvious to my intended audience. It is not always easy to take criticism (aka constructive feedback), but he was objective and very kind in his comments. I'm thrilled with the way this project turned out, and I would work with him again in a heartbeat.

Tori was incredibly valuable. She promptly edited my masters thesis. Communication was clear. She even provided detail and explanation in why an edit was made, making me a better writer in the process.

I had a great experience with Write for life, David T. I would work with him again on other projects in the near future. As a beginner writer, he listened to my voice, and develop the style to a professional level. Thank you.

Kate is easy and fun to work with. She has an intuitive approach. She is a good listener. I interviewed 6 writers (1 in Canada, 5 in US) before talking with Kate and I decided to go with Kate for 3 reasons: 1- her high-quality is worth more than its cost. 2 - she leaves nothing on the table, she is going to write it out and in a timely manner; without delay. 3 - her interview for my bio write-up was so thoughtful. Meaning, at one point I said to Kate, "I was hoping you were going to ask me about that." I've included a picture of my bio. The best part about working with Kate on my bio is that she aspires to capture your story and her writing technique is so good that whatever your story her writing adapts. Just know, if you work with Kate she is going to nail it! #thumbtack

I hired Kate to write my cover letter and resume. I spoke to several other resume writers, but decided to go with Kate because of her open, friendly nature, and vast professional experience. Kate was outstanding, I am thrilled with the resume and cover letter; even though Kate wrote them, they both reflect my style and voice. Kate took my rambling three page British curriculum vitae and turned it into a condensed, to the point 2 page American resume without losing any of the pertinent information. Kate kept in communication with me throughout the process, asking questions to help her channel my voice, informing me of her progress. In addition to that, Kate was open to me emailing/texting her any random questions that I had. That was very kind, and it added to the overall service provided by Kate. I've had my shiny new resume out in the world of job seekers for about a week now. And although I don't have any job offers/interviews, I am confident that I will soon. I would absolutely recommend Kate to all those who are looking for an exceptional resume writer - what makes her stand apart from others is that she only takes on two jobs at any given time. Thank you Kate for you hard work!

I hired Neyeah as a tutor for my daughter last year. My daughter was in class with Neyeah's younger brother in which he was always on the Honor Roll. My daughter is actually the one who brought it to my attention that Neyeah tutors him. I was able to get her to tutor my daughter 3x a week for about an hour each session. They worked on reading, math, and writing. My daughter was struggling in these courses . While under Neyeah she placed on the Honor Roll every month! It was astounding. She even got the award for Most Improved Student. Neyeah is amazing--truly genuine and loves kids. The only reason why she's not my daughters tutor now is because we now live in different states. However , highly recommended!

This was not my first effort trying to use a content writer and I had a negative opinion of all content writers after my first experience. Malory from “The Missing Ink” quickly changed my opinion about the value and opportunity a skilled writer can offer to a company. Malory is an excellent content writer and capable of writing about almost anything. She is punctual and created a beautiful 2,700 words of awesome content and she made it in a day. Based upon her first sample writing effort, I was so impressed that i have already given her new projects to tackle and plan to utilize her unique skills into the foreseeable future.

I thought JT was great to work with. He really took the time to speak with me and get my vision for where I wanted my content to go and say. If you are considering a content writer, I would highly recommend JT as he takes his time and gets it done right.

Most other resume writers were over my budget per job, and Thinkwork got it done in only a few hours. I think they were highly professional and detail oriented, he responded through text and listened to my goals. I was able to get a brushed up resume that showed my stregnths as a leader. Amazing job!

Over a three month period, Mr. Black assisted in winnowing a 600 page commercial novel to a lean 380 pages. He focused the main story, built the pace, and highlighted the main themes and characters. What was most impressive was his ability to shape and pace the story. In short, he took a turkey and deftly carved it which enabled the writer to present a beautiful platter. He is absolutely brilliant. Full value received. It is so easy to get lost in your own MS to have someone like Mr. Black is priceless. He is frank in both praise and criticism and won't waste your time. Living in Los Angeles I was nervous to work with someone from the East Coast but it worked out fine. He is accessible, responsive and worth diamonds.

The writer was extremely professional, overall the quality of the paper was amazing. Additionally, the writer worked with me to ensure that my paper satisfied me and met my needs. The writer constantly asked me my opinion on the paper before making any durastic changes. Being that I was on a very strict deadline, I was both amazed and surprised that the writer was very diligent in making sure my deadline was met.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
