(+) Suki fulfilled the expected tasks of a cat sitter -- providing food, filling the water bowl, and scooping the litter box. She sent daily photos. She was pretty quick to responding to my texts. Suki's rate/cost is affordable compared to other cat sitters, especially professionals (-) Although she sent daily photos, they were sometimes just blurry snaps of my cat's back. From the photos alone, it did not seem that Suki spent much time with him. Rather felt like she was merely showing me that she "checked in" to see my cat. I was disappointed to return home and see that the curtains were down when she said that she will make sure they are up.

Jen and her associates truly love pets. So many of the pet-sitters are solely focused on dogs. These guys really know and like cats, too. And my cats like them back.

Sarah watched my dogs for 10 days about a month ago. I have two dogs and work from home so they have beyond extreme separation anxiety, so I was very tentative to travel, but had to leave the country so taking my dogs with me was not an option. A close friend of mine recommended her to me and I tried it. I am so beyond grateful for Sarah and her services. She brought my dogs everywhere with her, fortunately she has a job allowing her to bring them to work with her, she brought them to local dog parks and even brought them to a dog bakery to pick out their own snacks and then stopped at PetSmart to let them pick out some new toys, much more than I would ever expect any petsitter to do. She kept me updated sending me at least two texts with pictures of my babies and responded to all my messages. My female dog, Madison, takes a while to warm up to people and can be snippy, Sarah had no issues at all with her and Madison trusted her within minutes of Sarah watching her. I returned home to a wonderful picture collage of my dogs "Vacation with Sarah" and them happily asleep in their beds snuggled with their new toys, I have Sarah routinely come take them on trips now as they love to leave the house and adventure with her, they always come home super happy and then sadly walk around for at least an hour after she leaves. I couldn't have found a better pet sitter if I had duplicated myself! She truly is amazing

Out of all the pet sitters I've hired over the past 14 years, Susan stands out as one of the best. She truly has a love for animals and obviously not in this business just for the money. I have a cat who requires insulin shots 2x a day and very scared around new people. She was a pro and on her own time, did some research about feline diabetes. Susan made me feel that my kitty was in good hands when I was away for 8 days. I want to keep her a secret because she's that good, but want someone who has a passion for animals and great business ethics to do very well. I'd recommend her for any of my friends who have cats or dogs.

We sought out Randy at Pup Walk Dog Service when our puppy Leila was 4 months old. We believe Randy has not only been her walker, but her steadfast caregiver. Randy has been patient, understanding and communicative as she continues to go through her "puppy phases". Having Randy there brings us piece of mind that she will continue to grow into a happy and healthy dog and we appreciate his time and efforts with our Leila.

Katy is a reliable, trustworthy and loving cat-sitter. I trust Katy completely to care for, feed and medicate our 16 year old cat. For many years Katy has taken care of him for us over long weekends to up to 3 weeks while we've been away overseas. She has always been there for us even when we've made last minute plans and over holidays. Our cat's special needs require being fed 2-3 times a day from a variety of foods which include frozen rabbit and/or chicken that needs to be defrosted ahead of time, cleaning his box every day while keeping a watchful eye he isn't blocked, and administering 2-3 medications up to twice a day. Katy goes above and beyond and truly does an amazing job, and she does so with love! Our cat does not like many people yet he has fallen in love with Katy and now runs to greet her at the door! I would absolutely recommend Katy to care for your cat if you are looking for someone who is responsible and caring too.

I could not have asked for better cat sitters! They are professional, kind and are very obviously real animal lovers. Because Jorge is a vet tech I felt comfortable leaving my sick cat with him for a few days and having him administer fluids and medicines. They have reasonable prices and I totally trusted them in my home. Both jorge and another employee even took it upon themselves to FaceTime me so I could say hi to my babies.

Diane is a perfect cat sitter. Firstly, she's a very nice person. After meeting her I was absolutely sure she'll do all the best for my kitty. Secondly, I found the cat happy and not sad at all (regularly, he is moody after our absence). I'll definitely contact Diane again.

We are a family of many pets thru the years. We do long weekends getaways frequently and always relied on family/friends to care for our pets . UNTIL, our 13 year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes(12/2014). His care now requires much more than food, shelter, a clean liter box and some love. He needs insulin and food at specific times of the day. Being newly diagnosed his behavior, liter use, needs to be monitored. Insulin dosage is not yet regulated(we've had ups & downs) and urine needs to be tested. I love my Sebastian, but he ended our long weekend getaways(too much to ask from a friend), until I met Chris!! We set up a meet & greet, at that moment I knew Chris is truly an lover of animals, he was (most important) knowledgeable about diabetes in cats( I felt like my vet was talking to me) and he as good with humans too! He left a lot of paperwork for me to do. To be honest, at first I thought really?? BUT it was all necessary info,it put my mind at ease, he now had all Sebastians history, our vets info, and our contact info. Since March 2015 Chris has cared for Sebastian 5 separate times. Every time we returned Sebastian was healthy and happy, as were his humans! Chris will always text /call us, he leaves a detailed log of his visits and Sebastians meds. Never a issue with the liter box. We are 100 percent secure with Chris in our home, that we even gave him his own key. I could go on and on, it's all good.... Thank you Chris Mehnert for the care you give!!

I can not recommend Dean enough for any service. Specifically, he was my children’s nanny and my house-sitter/pet caretaker for two years. He is responsible, tidy, considerate and conscientious. Furthermore, he is caring and honest. There is no one I could trust more than Dean. We miss him and can’t wait for his next stay with our family.

Jonathan has been a great help to our family and our lovely Maltese, Fluffy. Before Jonathan became our dog walker, Fluffy was always hyperactive around the house. Now he enjoys his daily morning walks with Jonathan. Jonathan is trustworthy and reliable—I know that my Fluffy is safe while I’m working.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

    • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
    • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
      • 45-minute visit: $28.
      • 60-minute visit: $32.
    • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
    • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
      • 12 hours: $100.
      • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32.
