Berry was very accommodating as he was able to work with my father on the repairs while me and my husband was in the hospital. He kept to the quote initially given and everything works great now. We will definitely be asking for him back when we need home improvements or repairs done to our house.

Walter did a great job fixing our Kitchet faucet. He arrived on time and was very professional. He also replaced another part which broke in the process of fixing the faucet. Overall I am very happy with his work and planning to hire him for other minor repairs around the home.

It was a pleasure working with Grievin! He assembled many pieces of furniture in our apartment and helped to rearrange the rooms. We had Home Ally clean the exterior of our home windows, screens, and tracks. They scheduled the work on the next day. The team was prompt, professional, and helpful. They did a fantastic job for a fair price. We will definitely use them again.

We had Rick at our apartment this past week to complete some electrical work (swap out old light switches and install a ceiling fan). Rick was a true professional, essentially everything as advertised. He was on time, he was quick and efficient and very comfortable to have in our home. I highly recommend Rick, not only on price but his craft. We will be having him back for further home improvements. Thanks Rick!

Konstantinos went above and beyond. I needed to repair damage to my living room walls and paint over a dark accent wall to match the existing paint in the unit. I was not able to find the same paint but Konstantinos did a beautiful job blending and completely covered up the areas where plaster had been ripped off from removing a pressurized wall. Not only did he do a great job on my painting / repair but he also helped me patch up some damage to my floors as a courtesy and all at a very reasonable price (and really the best price I could find after searching Thumbtack and Yelp). Would definitely hire him for future jobs.

Manny was extremely professional, he took the time to really explain to me what the issue was and the best and most cost effective way to resolve it. In addition to that he was very respectful of my tenants property and time. Thank you Manny for providing such great service, I really appreciate you coming to my property and taking care of the frozen pipe on my tenants apartment. I will definitely recommend you to my friends and family for all their plumbing needs. Thanks again and take care!

Hired Brian to mount a tv and take care of some random home improvement/handyman stuff in our new apartment. He has been fantastic. He helped me figure out the best installation system for the tv, the work itself has been excellent, and it’s really nice having someone who’s friendly and able to help with pretty much whatever.

Joe exceeded my expectations by going above and beyond the original scope of services to remedy several new issues that came about during this phase of my new home's landscaping project. His can do attitude served me well as he completed several jobs in a timely manner ultimately ensuring that the next phase of the landscaping project would move forward as scheduled with no delays. I would highly recommend him as he meets clients deadlines, provides fair/reasonable pricing and works well with other onsite trades. He is now my go to contractor for site work requiring earth moving equipment like excavators & skid steers.

"They are professional, curious and reasonably priced. They are also very good to their staff. I am now using Green Restoration LLC on a consistent basis and would recommend them to someone looking for a mold remediation.Very affordable and the quality of work is very impressive. We were very surprised how fast the job was done. We hired independent mold inspector after they finished the job and he asked if we had a mold at all :) . We had 3 positive tests from the lab . Thank you very much "

I highly recommend global hill construction company Mr. Shoodi performed an outstanding job and I am thrilled with the final results! My floors presented a challenge as they were badly damaged with staining and paint the full home In only 4 days shoodi transformed my flooring to looking brand new once again and pants results was very good. His technique provided me with many pros: reasonably priced, no need to move out of my home as his products are non-toxic ( a plus if you have pets or children ), the convenience of no sand or dust clean-up. Shoodi and his co-worker naveed were at all times polite, professional, and always on time as scheduled. They also meticulously moved all of my furniture back in place once the job was completed. An added bonus is their office manager ahmad who was a pleasure to deal with. Ahmad diligently took care of all appointment details including my building's insurance requirements, etc. A major plus for the consumer! New York, NY. Shoodi was a true professional.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
