I've been out of school for a couple years and needed to prepare again to take GMAT. Couldn't be happier when I found Arbor Tutors. Superb support with excellent tutors. I can't recommend them enough!

When we started preparing for the TACHS and the high school admissions process, we really were directionless about where to apply, what to look for in a school, what the TACHS was all about, or how to even go about preparing for it. Jeremy walked us through the process, worked patiently with our son, directed us to resources to reinforce the material, and gave him the confidence and he needed to be able to walk out of the test feeling like he aced it. Furthermore, Jeremy was professional, easy to work with, and his enthusiasm for helping kids achieve their maximum potential makes the difference between a good tutor and a great tutor.

Our daughter worked with James directly for several months prior to taking the June ACT and as a result of the lessons including one-on-one sessions and follow-up work, her score jumped 10 points! I highly recommend James and his team!!!!

My son is an honor student whose sights are on college. We took an extended trip out of the country last term that was a once in a lifetime opportunity we couldn’t pass up. All grades re-bounded but the Math grade got hit hard. With VERY little time to raise his now failing grade back to his A, we found Aron. We’re so happy we did! He was EXTREMELY willing to work with my son’s busy extra curricular schedule, and made himself available for extended lessons; as there was so much to go over in a short amount of time. Thanks to Aron, my son was able to recover an A-. That’s pretty remarkable! He’s knowledgeable, flexible, professional, and the best tutor we’ve found to date! We’d highly recommend him! Couldn’t be happier.

One of the best tutors my daughter ever had. She struggled with the sat for a year until we found him. He made lessons around her needs and that helped her do well. She was able to get into the college she wanted.

Robert teaches Italian lessons. I am a terrible student frequently confusing my High School French with what Robert patiently teaches me. He is good humored, well prepared and pushes me along just enough. I am never frustrated but always encouraged. Robert always is smiling and I never feel silly with my pronunciation. Robert really is a great teacher. I wish I had met him years ago before my first trip to Italy. I look forward to my lessons all week. Bravo Robert!!!!

My son is in 10th grade and a bright boy. However, with the ACT tests coming up we wanted him to reach his full potential. By using the Chelsea International test prep tutoring service, my son has excelled so much. He is now prepped to go to Stanford, and this is after only doing 6 short weeks of tutoring with Dr. Michelle. Her patience, understanding and encouragement, has driven my son to reach the greatest heights. He scored 35/36. I am so impressed and so thankful for the professional service of Chelsea International Schooling at Home.

This is not your regular tutoring! This is brain science wrapped in an ACT lesson! I had my younger brother work with Katya for 6 months and she helped him make a huge improvement in his ACT Score. I have never seen my brother so happy with his results.

I highly recommend Stuart as a tutor. What a pleasure it was to watch him in action as he so enthusiasticxally and effectively tutored my daughter in high school calculus! Stuart is selfless with his time and energy ... and brings an incredible work ethic to every exchange. He is a natural teacher; grounded in a strong base of knowledge in mathematics, Stuart connects with students in a meaningful manner, motivating them to excel. My daughter said it best: "Stuart is the best math coach I've ever had ... he's even better than my teacher". Dick Tantillo Vice President, Communications and Development Hamilton College

Danny is really great. I am working with Danny to take the CLEP exam in Algebra and it has been many, many years since I have been in school, so I remember very little about the subject. Danny is very knowledgeable and warm and immediately puts me at ease. He is dependable and calm and always manages to lift my spirits when I get discouraged. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Daniel's tutoring experience and knowledge of the material was key to our daughters acceptance to Bergen County Technical HS. Daniel always arrived on time for each lesson and always came prepared. We were also happy that he gave homework assignments to work on for the next lesson. Our overall experience was great. We will definitely contact Daniel again.

Sandy is a great tutor. The moment I walked into her working space we felt (my family & I) welcomed by Sandy with a great warm smile. I automatically felt comfortable with her, as she seemed very caring and eager to help. I told her that my son needed a lot of help with reading and she told me not worry and that he will have a great learning experience. She has been very understanding of my son needs. She even reach out to his teacher in school to be on track with his needs. Sandy has also manage to fit his classes at convenient times and is always reachable by phone. I strongly recommend Sandy, she truly care about transforming my son into a confident and fluent reader. I am very happy and can thanks her enough.

My daughter is applying to college now and man am I in way over my head! Then my friend referred me to Nikki, who tutored her daughter for the SAT. She's been working closely with my daughter to put together her admissions essays. Even though that's all I asked for, she's been helping us to choose the best schools for our girl too. Way better than the school guidance counselor!

I was able to expierence Mrs. Nolan at her very first teaching job. As the class clown/troublemaker, I made sure to make that the most difficult year of her life. However, Mrs. Nolan saw more potential in me than most people, and kept pushing me to do my best. Mrs. Nolan is a one-of-a-kind teacher because she makes the lessons enjoyable, understandable, makes herself available for any type of assistance (school-related, personal issues), and she’s very organized. I can honestly say Mrs. Nolan was a major influence on my academic achievements.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
