My air conditioner stopped working yesterday. I put in my request in Thumbtack and in less than an hour Kathy had sent me an email with a quote! And after reading the reviews I was more than impressed enough to give Action Air a shot. Kathy sounded like a nice lady. She said Sam would be able to come out and he was there an hour or so after that! I was so surprised since even with PSEG unless it's an emergency you would probably have had to wait till Monday. Sam was amazing! He was able to diagnose the problem within 5 minutes. Even was able to reproduce how the fuse was blowing out cause of a bad controller/motherboard. He got the new piece Monday morning and then later in the day installed it. It's working again without missing a beat. No other issues! I am impressed he got it exactly right. It is hard to get people to do good quality work these days at fair prices and Action Air was more than fair and Sam was more than qualified and good! Such a nice and smart guy and easy enough to understand if you're willing to listen! Thank you Kathy and god bless you Sam!

From the first phone call to set up the appointment until the completion of the job Joseph was completely professional and helpful, he went out of his way with his heavy workload and the rain and hot weather to make sure that my air conditioner was up and running. He was extremely helpful on giving me a proper walk through on each setting on the AC and explained how the energy saver really works, he was playful with my son and my son really felt comfortable and him. On a scale of 1 - 10 I would have to give him a 20, exceptional service and as we speak I'm finding something else around the house that needs to be fixed to give Joseph a call!! I'd recommend his service to anyone! Thanks again Joseph! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

We needed our central air system repaired quickly and despite Cye’s busy schedule he was able to provide same day service. He knew exactly what was the cause and repaired it in a timely manner. He also gave us recommendations for future projects upon request. I highly recommend Cye’s HVAC. He is a professional, honest and reliable person which is hard to find these days.

Central air conditioner on the roof was not working. They showed up the same day as promised. Fixed the problem and the price was reasonable, particularly when considering how HVAC contractors can be huge rip-offs

This was a great experience. I am so glad I choose Frank for this job. He was on time, very professional, friendly and pleasant to have in my home. His work was excellent , not only did he install both my air conditioners securely he gave additional tips and information and made sure the appliances worked before he left. He was more than fair in his pricing and did the job in a timely manner. I definitely would use him again and would refer him to others.

I originally called P&M mechanical because I was having a problem with one of my air conditioners, he diagnosed my problem and repaired it at a very reasonable price. Weeks later I was having problems with my second unit and decided to replace it after receiving quotes from a number of companies I decided again to go with P&M mechanical, because of his work ethics and professionalism he replaced my air conditioner the next day. Using P&M Mechanical was one of the best decisions I have made.

I had Pseg come 3 times to fix the air conditioner and they said everything's fine. But still was getting no air in the apartment. They claimed they checked everything. I called Obed once he quickly came over and figured out the problem that Pseg couldn't.

I had an issue with Air Conditioner and it was not starting. It is an original A/C unit with the house and issue could not be diagnosed by an earlier technician. Aaron was very responsive and quick to diagnose issue with the Capacitor and replace it immediately and unit started working. Really impressed by very courteous and prompt and high quality work. My issue was with my air conditioner. I needed someone at my house on a Sunday. I had some anticipatory fear as to how much it was going to cost me even if I COULD get someone out on Sunday. I have to say, Jim came out that same day just a few hours after my request. He was punctual, professional, and very, very reasonable. Homerun, Jim!!! Thanks for your help. I would highly recommend Air and Water Solutions for your home repair needs.

Although I can't rate work quality (since I have no idea of what would be good work quality in air conditioner maintenance), the technician appeared to know his job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
