(+) Suki fulfilled the expected tasks of a cat sitter -- providing food, filling the water bowl, and scooping the litter box. She sent daily photos. She was pretty quick to responding to my texts. Suki's rate/cost is affordable compared to other cat sitters, especially professionals (-) Although she sent daily photos, they were sometimes just blurry snaps of my cat's back. From the photos alone, it did not seem that Suki spent much time with him. Rather felt like she was merely showing me that she "checked in" to see my cat. I was disappointed to return home and see that the curtains were down when she said that she will make sure they are up.

Jen and her associates truly love pets. So many of the pet-sitters are solely focused on dogs. These guys really know and like cats, too. And my cats like them back.

Jill has a very positive attitude toward our two rather sensitive and wary dogs. Her loving and calming effect has our dogs waiting at her feet with wagging tails. They LOVE her after only one visit! Jill is a professional, kind, caring and honest person. We don't use pet sitters regularly -- it's those last-minute weekend vacations or times when we work late and need someone to come and care for them. She always makes herself available and ensures our dogs are not only fed and given fresh water, but that they get their regular, long walks. We are so lucky to have found Jill.

We love Prima Donna Pet Services! We have two large rescue dogs and have the utmost trust in Prima Donna's Pet Service. We rely on them to care for our beloved pets whenever we go away or just need a night out. In addition to the service being extremely reliable, we always know that our fur kids are cared by professionals with excellent judment, kind hearts and a love for animals. It's the only pet sitting service I have ever used that I know with 100% confidence that my dog kids will be cared for as well as if I were home.

When our regular neighborhood petsitter was no longer available, I wasn't sure what we would do. Our cats get fed wet food, and our oldest cat has some medical issues, so we wanted someone who wouldn't just "pet and run." Kate stayed over and cared for them as we would. Our cats were calm and content when we came home. They want her back!

Because my dog is old and gets sick with the kennel cough shot, I had not been able to get her groomed. When I found Ray & Fay who will come to your house. My dog was so matted and overgrown hair. They did a wonderful job. Fay was so good with my dog, who hates grooming. She did as good a job as any groomer to whom I've taken my dog. It was an excellent experience

Katy is a reliable, trustworthy and loving cat-sitter. I trust Katy completely to care for, feed and medicate our 16 year old cat. For many years Katy has taken care of him for us over long weekends to up to 3 weeks while we've been away overseas. She has always been there for us even when we've made last minute plans and over holidays. Our cat's special needs require being fed 2-3 times a day from a variety of foods which include frozen rabbit and/or chicken that needs to be defrosted ahead of time, cleaning his box every day while keeping a watchful eye he isn't blocked, and administering 2-3 medications up to twice a day. Katy goes above and beyond and truly does an amazing job, and she does so with love! Our cat does not like many people yet he has fallen in love with Katy and now runs to greet her at the door! I would absolutely recommend Katy to care for your cat if you are looking for someone who is responsible and caring too.

I could not have asked for better cat sitters! They are professional, kind and are very obviously real animal lovers. Because Jorge is a vet tech I felt comfortable leaving my sick cat with him for a few days and having him administer fluids and medicines. They have reasonable prices and I totally trusted them in my home. Both jorge and another employee even took it upon themselves to FaceTime me so I could say hi to my babies.

Diane is a perfect cat sitter. Firstly, she's a very nice person. After meeting her I was absolutely sure she'll do all the best for my kitty. Secondly, I found the cat happy and not sad at all (regularly, he is moody after our absence). I'll definitely contact Diane again.

Don't look any further! Peggy is just brilliant! Not only a great pet sitter but a lovely person. I have had many pet sitters in the past and I didn't know this kind of service was possible, she provides daily updates and cute pictures while we are away, she buys Rosita (a tiny chichi) yummy treats and gives her tons of love. She is so responsible, sweet, experienced (she has a big bunch of rescue pets herself) and caring that my dog misses her and of course she stops by once in a while to pet her and let her know she is still around. We feel very lucky to have her in our lives! :-)

K-9 Experts LLC is an amazing dog walking and training company. The firm is run by Jose Menedez out of Short Hills, NJ. He has a dedicated team of dog walkers who can handle all of your pet needs. They are always very punctual, professional and easy to work with. You can schedule you dog walking appointments on-line and you receive an email when the dog walker has entered your house and at the end of the walk telling you how the walk went. K-9 Experts LLC offers house services like taking in the mail, newspapers etc so you know your house and pet are safe. They also will feed you pet or take him to appointments as necessary. They are a one stop shop for all your pet walking, boarding and training needs. They have provided me with exceptional services and great dog care advice over the years. A year ago I had an emergency and wound up in the hospital for 4 days and they immediately went by my house and pickup up my dog and boarded him until I recovered. They truly care about your pets!

I adopted two rescue dogs from Sindee and have a third from pets alive. Sindee takes care if all three when I am not around and keeps a key to my house in case of emergency (like when I was stuck on the west side highway for hours and they needed to go out. I felt that since she has been doing dog rescue for over 20 years she would be the ideal person to care for them when I wasn't around. I find her to be compassionate and caring and my dogs love and trust her as do I.

I could not be happier with Khalifa's Animal House -- and with Granesha -- for her work. After going through dog walkers, and being disappointed, I can finally feel comfortable and secure with the person who walks my dog. Not only did she insist on meeting my dog before walks began, a huge plus so that my anxious pup could get to know her afternoon handler, but she even brought her toys and treats to better engage her and get to know her. Since hiring her, I have received an email after each and every single walk describing how the dog went, where the two went, my dog's mood, and an added bonus of both videos and pictures. As someone who worries about her worrying dog, this always puts my mind at ease. Granesha, the founder, and my personal dog-walker, considers herself an animal advocate, and I agree 100%. I am so pleased with her services and would highly recommend.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

    • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
    • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
      • 45-minute visit: $28.
      • 60-minute visit: $32.
    • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
    • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
      • 12 hours: $100.
      • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
