We hired Erika to conduct an interactive cooking class for our daughters 16th birthday. Erika was great with the girls and they all had an amazing time - all while learning to cook and about nutrition. Erika created a menu that was teenage friendly so the girls would really enjoy the food and experience.

Melissa's cooking event was incredibly informative! I learned so much about nutrition, detoxing, and food preparation. The juice and meals she prepared exceeded my expectations and were wildly delicious!

Waking up at 6am is difficult and being energized is even more challenging. But Peter is able to keep me focused, engaged and enthusiastic with my 6am workouts and I leave feeling great and ready to tackle the day. He has listened to my workout goals and developed a personalized workout plan for me. I feel like I am working out more effectively than ever before and I can't wait to see the results (I am only a week in). I was impressed the first session when he said that it was a better use of his and my time if I did my cardio warm-up before he arrived so that I wasn't paying him to watch me run on a treadmill - I feel like that showed he respected that I was paying for training and he wanted to make sure I got my money's worth. Peter has also given me great advice about nutrition and workouts outside of my training sessions with him. I feel like he knows his stuff and will ensure I don't injure myself or strain anything while at the same time pushing myself beyond what I think I can do. I feel great and I'm very satisfied so far and would recommend him as a trainer to anyone.

I was looking for a trainer who was knowledgeable in post surgical training. I had serious issues with my leg and had been through physical therapy and wanted to take the next step to working out again. I needed someone who could assess my limitations and provide a plan of proper exercises without causing pain or injury. Ian was the perfect choice. He motivated and encouraged me every step of the way. The unexpected bonus was his experience in nutrition and formed a plan which helped me finally lose the weight I had gained while recuperating from surgery . I would highly recommend Ian for whatever your goals in training may be. He will definitely help you reach them!

Lucie is absolutely the real deal and a true expert for personal training AND nutrition! I trained with Lucie for about a year and saw the most amazing changes in my body composition and strength than at any other time in my life. I had been around different sports conditioning/ workout programs for about 15 years, since my mid-teens, but can honestly say that I never really knew proper training AND nutrition until I worked with Lucie. You can see that I capitalize "AND" when I say training AND nutrition because when you work with Lucie she proves how much they truly go together. She is truly adept in both training and nutrition and gets results!! She practices what she preaches and her work ethic is contagious. Lucie taught me changes for what to eat and when to eat it. What to have before and after a workout. How much of a certain type of food or nutrient to have a day. How heavy I should be lifting. Everyone is different Lucie can customize based on the client and their goals. If you put forth the effort Lucie has the knowledge and passion for fitness to change your life. Lucie taught me all of these aspects to training and I am forever grateful for the changes she helped me achieve.

When I first met Erika, I had just set out to attempt my first ever sprint triathlon. Up to that point, I had been exercising on my own and lost over 100 lbs. I still needed lots of training and only 8 weeks until the race. What Erika then did for me was above and beyond what I could have done on my own. We began training; building powerful muscles and developing balance and stability. She even helped with nutrition planning and recovery tips. I completed my first sprint triathlon but felt my result was lackluster. For a first timer, this was normal. The next day I quickly signed up for another sprint triathlon for that summer. Once we began training for that, Erika amazed me yet again. The training sessions became much more intense. She provided solid motivation to keep up my mental strength. We built lots of explosive muscle and incredible cardio stamina. I finished the 2nd triathlon in the top 50% overall. It felt amazing. The training also translated well in my other hobby, soccer. The results were very real.

GeneWorks = Gene works!! Gene is AMAZING! It's rare to find fitness professionals who are passionate about what they do and at the same time actually care about their clients' overall well-being. Gene has been my trainer and my life coach for the past 3 years and I couldn't have asked for a better professional. I am a law enforcemnet officer and although I am active in my field, I put on unnessary weight some years back but since training with him I have lost excess body fat and gained muscle mass, I am now eating well based on his recommendaions and feel like I did when I was in my 20s (I'm now in my 30s). I am in the best shape I have EVER been! I recommend Gene to anyone who is looking for an honest, caring and very professional trainer, life coach or sports nutrition specialist. Thank you GeneWorks!!!

Shayla has been helping me to get into shape with a cardio/weight routine at Ditmas Fitness. She's great. She understands the fundamentals of fitness, health, and nutrition and tailors the workout around my specific needs. She has new exercises every week so it's never boring. She pushes me to get the most out of the workout. This is my first experience working with a trainer, but Shayla makes me feel confident about my potential to get in shape.

"I am a challenging client because I hate pushing myself! John makes our work outs fun. They would fly by before I could do too much complaining. What impressed me most is his knowledge of the human body and how it responds to specific workouts, nutrition, and supplements. He's more than a trainer who reminds you that it’s all a mind game, he becomes your coach. He tweaked my diet, he educated me about reaching my goals, and helped me learn how to maintain that goal. I would recommend him for anyone looking for real results." Cindy

Priya is like your own personal cheerleader. She is not only a health wikipedia who knows all about food and nutrition, but is also vastly knowledgeable about all sorts of holistic healthcare methods like natural supplementation and treatments like acupuncture. She is really invested in her clients' health, and she doesn't just dole out advice; she works with you to help you learn what works best for you and your lifestyle. However, if you need a push, she'll definitely give you that too! Changing habits is difficult, and as someone with a chronic condition, it was easy to lose motivation or feel like my progress was going backwards, but Priya was always there to remind me of how far I have come and to help me get through my ups and downs. She is great about checking in frequently and making sure I am steady on the path to achieving my health goals. And whenever I had hiccups, she would remind me it's ok to be human, and that to mess up is alright, and also part of the wellness journey. Consistency is important, and there is always tomorrow to make up for the stumbles. Without Priya's guidance and dedication, I would not have been able to find the self-confidence to get healthier. She has really helped to change my life for the better, and I cannot recommend her services enough.

I have truly never had food that tastes as fresh as Diane’s. Before working with Diane, I searched high and low for affordable, healthy, personalized food options that are also delicious. Diane is my fairygodmother! She feeds my family healthy, clean foods that they love so I don’t have to cook or worry about what to make for dinner because I work. She is also so knowledgeable about health and nutrition and she was able to make me delicious foods while following my food restrictions. She is so nurturing and I would not be able to get healthy and keep my family healthy without her sustenance! Nyc working mom

Sandra is a real delight. We have been working together for about one month now and I already feel stronger and have put on muscle weight. I look forward to my work outs with Sandra as she really knows her stuff when it comes to fitness and nutrition. Also, she makes the work outs different every time so I do not get bored. She is very patient and will push you when you need it. At the same time, she is mindful of any prior injuries you may have had. I would recommend her to friends and family.

Artie Ostrom has been working with me as my personal trainer since Jan 2013 now and I recommend him highly to anyone who is concerned about their health and physical condition and here’s why. Back in March 2012 I underwent Rotator cuff surgery on my left shoulder and a week or so after, went to Rehab. When I got the OK from the Dr. to go to a trainer to regain my strength and reflexibility and also entering my 60’s I decided to make the investment in myself to get in shape so I can enjoy my life going forward. I joined Jersey Shore Fitness Shop in Bradley Beach but got a little intimated with all of the machines and apparatus there. I asked the staff, who was very helpful and they told me that as far as a Personal Trainer is concerned that Art Ostrom was very good. I asked around and they all seem to point in his direction. Besides, he has very impressive credentials – as an ACE Certified Personal Trainer with a degree in nutrition. It was the best decision I have ever made! In very little time Artie got me not only back in shape but stronger than ever in that shoulder. A few shorts years after I developed another bone spur in my right shoulder and needed to have the same surgery on that side as well. After “rehabbing” that side, I got released from the doctor and he said, whatever or whoever you went to before, go back to him and do the same on the right side as you did on the left because that side is in great shape! Thus, I’ve been with him ever since! Every training session is always a little different then the last and the man is always thinking! For instance, when we start at the gym, there may be only a couple of people but the place fills up pretty quickly so the exercises he has planned for me sometimes can’t be done with the machine he wants to do it. He quickly thinks of another way to get the job done with another machine. He pays special attention to Nutrition and I get reminders by email all of the time about drinking water or asking what I had to eat after the workout the night before. He’s a special trainer, with a lot of charisma, easy to work with and very knowledgeable! I never thought I’d say this, but I really enjoy my workouts with him! I would recommend Art to anyone looking for a personal trainer. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at kjewell21@optonline.net

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.
