Mr. Lopez unclogged my very badly clogged bathroom sink which I could no longer use. He actually contacted me to state he would be late which is a big plus as most tradespeople either never show or don't bother to let you know they are running late. He also did an excellent clean-up job. I can now use my sink. Mr. Lopez is also a very nice man.

It’s been a pleasure meeting Juan. He was really easy to communicate with, resourceful, very knowledgeable and really fast in his work. Very reasonable in his pricing too. I will be definitely scheduling him for more projects in the coming months. Such a pleasant surprise in a plethora of mediocre handymen!

I'm a developer from interstate helping out my uncle in NJ, and my schedule was really all over the place. Kon arrived to assess the work first to quote, and advise. His price was reasonable. He then commuted a hour each day with his guy from QNS to work on Friday, Sunday, and on Monday in ice. His punctuality, work and word are bankable. He also takes great pride in his work which was perfect, take it from a developer who holds his tradesmen to the highest standard. Brand new walls from an old wallpaper mess.

James remodeled the kitchen, flooring and interior painting. His knowledge and professionalism is exceptional. He is very detail oriented. He went out of his way to recommend few things like missing exhaust in our kitchen. When you seek any suggestions, he doesnt treat it as a way to make more money and instead suggest us what is doable. Many other contractors were reluctant to install an island in kitchen but James is never hesitant to try out something that we requests for. He would be the go person for any of our remodeling needs. If any suggestions to improve, I’d suggest to have frequent discussions with the client on site in person (sometimes text communications make it tough) and you’d be outstanding in your profession. I highly recommend James to any of your construction or remodeling needs.

Good quality work - very conscientious tradesmen. They did not hesitate to do over anything I asked them to and when rain had affected the stain on the deck, they re-painted the whole deck. It all looks great. I will use them again.

Nertil and his crew at London did a spectacular job with my home! It was a small painting project, but they were such a pleasure to work with. They came prepared and on time, and were very considerate and respectful of my home. I would most certainly hire this company again for future projects, and strongly recommend them to anyone.

We bought a house in haste and had extremely tight timeline to get several jobs done before moving in. Sam saved the day! I am amazed by the quality and professionalism he and his team delivered. They did paint job, flooring, tiling, bathroom remodeling, light fitting and even fixed a leaky plumbing. It was simply a delight to get all the job finished beautifully in record time of ~2 weeks. I don’t have a single complain. He provided very helpful insights, helped us with options and was mindful of our budget and constraints. A true partner all along. Before this experience, I have always been very skeptical of home remodeling, but now with Sam I would rather do a fixer upper. Thank you, Sam for all your hard work!

Brian's restored our broken antique rocking chair to its original condition for less than half of his repair estimate. He also fixed a variety of small (yet annoying) issues in the apartment which other carpenters were unable to fix. Has enthusiam for his work, a wide range of skills and a gentle manner. There's no categorical rating that would be high enough to encapsulate the quality of his work, or the pleasure and ease of working with him.

Ndue from Kolecki Construction met me at an apartment that I wanted to buy to look at the electric, which needed to be upgraded. I didn’t end up buying the apartment or hire Ndue, but I was impressed by his responsiveness and knowledge. He met me at the building and was right on time. Buying real estate in New York is an imposing process, especially when you need to hire a contractor and don’t know where to begin. Ndue invited me to buildings where his team was working and where walls were open so that I see what they do. I still don’t have an apartment, but I’ll call him if that day comes.

Cesar was a spectacular handyman. He came promptly, brought all necessary tools, asked great questions to make sure the job went well, and was careful and focuses of quality the whole time. The work for us included mounting shelves for a ‘memory wall, for my late wife, who passed away from cancer earlier this year. Cesar’s commitment to quality ensured that this very special project was a success. Thank you, Cesar!

Absolutely amazing experience with these guys!!! I was extremely impressed with their puncutuality- they arrived early each morning & finished the product exactly when they said they would. Most importantly, the final product was of great quality; my favorite thing about All-Rise is that they are extremely detail oriented.. very hard to find!! I’ve had issues in the past with other contractors & their unresponsiveness... everyone that i’ve spoken to at All-Rise was extremely informative and knowledgeable; these guys really take pride in what they do. Highly recommend.

Needed repair for water damage in a ceiling, re-calling a tub, and drywall repair in a bedroom. It was very easy to make and appointment for an estimate and started work the following day. He was very thorough, making sure there were no other leaks in the ceiling and did the job quickly and well. Based on my experience I would highly recommend him.

Jorge Bonilla and his team are very professional . They always came on time and were always here when needed .  They are very clean and will leave your space in a great condition on a daily basis .  The execution is impeccable , and most important Jorge IS HONEST & RELIABLE! Something that's hard to find in any professions but even more so in construction, and he's reasonably priced ! If you plan a renovation, and want to have special orders, like me, don't wait till the last moment to order it so it doesn't slow down the project . Just ask him how much you should order and go from there . He's helpful and will treat you like a friend. He did my Kitchen renovation just as I asked him to do it. I highly recommend him ! It is all around positive ..

Globe Tech is one of the best contractors I've ever worked with. They're professional in every aspect and always keeps you informed and updated on the job status. They go out of their way to help you work with insurance companies, also. I highly recommend them especially if you have large, complicated jobs to do.

The entire process with Longo construction and electrical was fun and easy! I would definitely have to refer them to anyone contemplating a renovation!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
