Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

We hired Corniel Construction to renovate our midtown Manhattan apartment. We added 700 square feet of ceramic tile and renovated the fixtures in the bathroom. The project was completed quickly, and we are very pleased with the results. Waldy was extremely professional and responded quickly to all our concerns and took initiative in making the project look right. I highly recommend this company and look forward to working with them again for our next renovation project.

While I didn't ultimately go forward with my renovation project, Christopher was a fantastic help. He was professional but personable, expert and understanding. Both through Thumbtack and in person, he quickly grasped what I was looking for, and his advice was valuable from the beginning. In fact, thanks to his careful examination of a potential commercial lease space, I probably saved tens of thousands of dollars in unforeseen (to my eyes) renovation needs. Thanks again Chris!

John & FX were outstanding - handled entire process of apartment renovation through difficult coop in NYC without issue. The work quality and communication were superb; John is readily available and responsive, open to direction, and provides good value for the work performed without ‘nickel & diming’ each minor change order. He understands the workflow and current standards needed for high end renovation projects. Current super & Workman also offer unsolicited praise for his kindness and thoroughness during the job. I would recommend him without reservation.

I am a interior designer in New York. I hired Innovators to renovate a one bedroom for a client in a top co-op building in NYC. The building had strict guidelines for any alterations. Edward and his crew were very careful to follow the building regulations and rules which is very important when working on many of the buildings in NY. Innovators has a great pull of skilled workmen and sub contractors. Many of his workers are multi-skilled and professional. We are at the end of the renovations and are please with the outcome. We will use Innovators again in future projects. Giselle Ulmo Giselle Ulmo Design

I've worked with Integrated Asset Mgmt on a full home renovation and smaller jobs as well. As a designer, I have worked with many contractors and Chris is now my go-to GC for large and small projects alike. I've had plenty of bad experiences with GCs and every project has it's issues. The way a contractor handles those issues is key to the overall experience. Renovation is very stressful for homeowners, especially in Manhattan, so Chris's calm demeanor and way of quickly coming up with solutions rather than focusing on why the problem happened or placing blame on others is extremely helpful. I would (and have) highly recommend Integrated Asset Mgmt to any of my clients.

We booked Molina Renovations for a full apartment renovation with a timeline of a little over 3 weeks to complete the work (kitchen, laminate flooring thru-out, bathroom flooring, sink, re-coat bathtub, and cosmetic cleaning of wall tiles, SKIN COAT the entire walls and ceilings in the apartment, replaced doors, hardware and fixtures) the apartment was severely neglected for the past 20 years and Molina Renovation were professionals (Nico is the brother and his crew) always on time, and in order to meet the deadline we agreed on elected to work each day a little later and on holidays and some days on the weekend. The work was attentive and great focus on detail was applied. They are a breeze to communicate with and very accommodating. There are always some issues that creep up during a project and both Frankie and Nico were easy to work with and find a resolution. I would without a doubt hire them again and recommend anyone to do so. They offered us a choice between a commercial or residential type plan to select, the latter being very upscale work with top shelf materials. We opted for that and are very happy with the results. As for value, we feel we absolutely got what we paid for, that being said, we did go over on a few items from the allowance it was our decision to do so and Frankie was always fair in the estimate.

Replace bathroom tile, renovate bathroom, build new closet, replace kitchen sink/faucets/counter, replace radiator, install recessed lighting. Working with Ariel was a pleasure. Jacob and Joseph understood the work completely, had great advice on the design of my small Manhattan studio. They started on time every day were easy to communicate with and were fairly priced. I would def recommend them to friends and family.

I had Alex renovate 2 walls of closet space, paint my ceilings and other existing cabinetry, as well as fix a few odds and ends around the apartment. The job started with the demolition of 2 walls and then building and installing the cabinet doors and shelving. The carpentry looks very good, tho on closer inspection, he has little attention to detail. (ie. sloppy caulking). Unfortunately, he has no idea how to paint wooden cabinetry. It was a very poor job. He offered to redo it but after the 2nd try I needed him to stop. What should have been a fairly smooth surface, is full of lumps, roller marks and brush marks. See photos attached. I appreciated Alex's punctuality. The job would have taken 2 weeks but because the decorative molding he installed, didn't match my existing cabinetry molding, I had him redo that and it added an extra few days. If he was going to be late for a meeting, he called to let me know. He definitely, wants to please his customers, but his speed comes at a cost. I am in the process of sanding and painting all the woodwork.
