I have a two-year-old Australian Shepherd, Scout, who has a ton of energy and a nearly equal amount of anxiety, a recipe for disaster in terms of training by myself. Enter Nathan. I’ve had two private lessons with Nathan and then a 10-day board and train. When I dropped Scout off, she was difficult to walk with just a leash and collar and somewhat manageable with a gentle leader or training harness. As Nathan pointed out, she had trouble with self-control and was easily distractible. Nathan spent a great deal of time explaining his methods and views on dog training, he listened to my concerns, and spent time assessing where Scout was. He didn’t promise a perfectly trained dog in 10 days or set unrealistic goals for his board and train program. Instead, he explained the importance of his focus on self-control and how that would set the stage for success in her continued training at home and with him. At the end of the board and train program I couldn’t be happier with her progress. She’s learned the place command, settles into with complete ease, she knows to wait at a door before walking out, and is all around much calmer at home and away from home. On our first walk after training, my 8-year-old son was able to walk her with just a collar and minimal pulling, which to me is the truest measure of success of Nathan’s training. I look forward to continuing to work with Nathan and would highly recommend him to anyone considering group or personal training or the board and train program.

My dog is 13 years old and we couldn't have had a better dog groomer that was sensitive to the needs of our golden retriever. We will call her back again soon and look forward to the appointment.

Loved loved loved Tonia Maier & her private dog training lessons. She is a very caring, dedicated & professional dog trainer & lover of all animals. Her understanding of dogs & her training techniques are superb. She gives you all the necessary training tools and skills needed for success, in being able to work with your dog on a daily bases, in redirecting any bad behaviors and learning new lifetime skills needed for your dog/s to come, stay, sit & leave it. She also teaches you important socialization tools needed in training your dog. She gives you a copy of written weekly follow-up training materials to keep on hand for continued training that has to be done by the dog owner on a consistent day to day bases for complete success. She has taught me that good dog behaviors are the sole responsibility of the owner. A dog is only as good as the owner trains it & allows it to be. Dogs are, and always will be our very best friends! I love them all. Thank you Tonia for your help, skills and patience. You are very talented, loving, kind and simply the BEST dog training professional I have met. KUDOS Tania - me and Milo are pawsatively very thankful and happy with our continued & dedicated daily training techniques you have taught us. Ciao 🐾 👍👏 😎

Dog' Gone workout is a great atmosphere for dogs to socialize and play. They have plenty of room to run around and exercise. Delia is amazing with the dogs and she is a great trainer. I have been brining my dog Zeus there for several months now and his behavior has improved significantly.

Very warm and friendly animal lovers. The home is very nice and very clean. I feel my little dog will be very happy, safe and loved there. I would not worry about him while I was away.

About

Working on the most important issues from the start of your relationship w/ your dog will increase the likelihood of becoming 'lifetime friends and companions. I have worked with multiple breeds of dogs, titled them in obedience in america and canada. I have a depth of knowledge from years of private lessons and running obedience classes. Sometimes in the home is the best place to start and other times it is seeing the dog and partner/family in neutral territory. Consultation by email is free as is an initial phone consult.

Not a problem here, We have a giant garage made for play time! ( see video to see pups playing in the space ) Every dog can be a lap dog here, Nova certainty is! Unless a client specifies no furniture, we welcome your pup to join us on the couch for nap times. Our cat Katie might also say hello, she is great with other dogs but does get intimated by large dogs for about an hour or so until they settle in. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
