Don and his boys have remodeled (2) condos for me in Amherst. He and the boys put down 7 tile floors and painted 3 large rooms. Don occasionally worked alone to install ceiling fans, a shower door, some wall tiles, install a wall to wall carpet, wood panel a 13 x 13 room, and repair an electric circuit and a bathtub faucet.

I hired JAD Construction on Dec. 21, 2017, the men came to my home the next day at 9 am. I needed work done in my finished basement, floor tile, pedestal sink installed, baseboards and a front doorbell. I was highly impressed with their work and immediate availability. I will be proud to refer them to family and friends.

Nate was very prompt to reply to the Thumbtack request. He made great recommendations and was courtesy and fast in finishing the project. His team has attention to detail and works to ensure absolute satisfaction of the customer. This was my first roofing project and I am so pleased I went with this company. After searching around, I found that this was the best company for the price, quality and peace of mind.

Dave and Steve have helped with multiple projects in my rental property including both a flooring and a roofing project. Overall, the service was great. They were easy to schedule, on time, and completed the job at my convenience to get new tenants in the unit. I highly recommend going through both Dave and Steve for any carpentry job small or large,

During the windstorm of 2017, many shingles came off the roof. Allstate did not want to pay for a full re-roof. Due to BK Contractors knowledge of the town codes and roofing, they had convinced Allstate to pay for a full re-roof. $$$aved a lot of money. The crew did a awesome job. They were on time and made sure all debris were cleaned up. I highly recommend them.

Roof looks great, Picture Perfect Homes made every effort to expedite the installation and keep costs down! In one small section I had a concern about how the water was flowing off the roof during the rain. Steve was out there immediately to view my concern while it was raining and had the issue remedied. I plan to use Picture Perfect Homes for all my future projects.

I hire Murphy Brothers to install a metal roof on one of my rental properties as well as my elderly mothers residence. They completed both projects on time and on budget without any issues or overages in cost. I would recommend Murphy Brothers to anyone in the Greater Rochester Area who needs a roof replacement, particularly a metal roof replacement as Murphy Brothers does first rate installs at very reasonable prices.

The most frustrating aspect of home renovations is finding experienced and capable people to do the job. I certainly found those characteristics with Herrick Construction. My calls and emails were returned promptly, they came out to the house, listened to what I needed done, offered opinions and suggestions and followed up with an estimate promptly. I needed a flat roof rebuilt and repaired, a covered deck replaced, as well as an outside wall replaced. After our contract was agreed on, Herrick was out the next day to start the job. Aside from doing a complete tear off the roof, Herrick replaced a good portion of the plywood, removed a leaky sky light, ice shielded the entire area, and shingled. Throughout, Herrick went above and beyond by not only repairing a roof that should have been condemned, but strengthened the infrastructure of the area, rerouted some of the gutters to ensure a better water exit and made many minor repairs along the way at no additional cost. The rebuild of the outside wall went exceptionally well. Herrick ensured that the wall will be stable and that no further water damage or decay will occur. The deck was a very labor intensive job and Herrick Construction did a great job on a structure that should not have been a deck to begin with. Don Herrick and his crew have a great deal of experience and I would have no hesitation in recommending them to others or using them again for future projects! Most importantly, NO LEAKS!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
